Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

If bitcoin had a face, it'd probably be Hal's.

I have already posted here but seeing as no one has mentioned Gavin Andresen yet, I thought his name should be mentioned in this thread.
I get that he really helped in the early days, but I can't unsee the fact that he's cooperated with Craig Wright and have informed everybody that he's the real Satoshi and that he's showed him a signed message from the genesis' address[1][2].

+1, I know chances are very slim but I like to think that was behind Satoshi Nakamoto pseudonym.

Regarding the bitcoin heroes, three names immediately come to my mind; first one is Hal Finney who for me is embodiment of everything (I think) Satoshi is, 2nd  is Andreas Antonopoulos for his efforts in spreading the word about bitcoin and last but not least Laszlo Hanyecz, who is the reason I make bitcoin themed pizza every year to commemorate his famous transaction.

I have bookmarked this thread and I am going to read through it as soon as I have some more time, thanks!

I love how Vitalik destroyed him in this discussion. I think I get what happened now. According to Gavin, he has no doubt that craig is satoshi. At least, that's what he thought back in 2016. He apparently signed a message of Gavin's choosing with a private key that only satoshi could possess. Gavin doesn't mention verifying the signature though and nothing was posted and proved publicly. However, the two of them want to convince the world that it happened and we should just trust them without trying to verify anything on our end. Because that's the point of Bitcoin, blindly trust don't verify. Roll Eyes
It's funny how Gavin says that craig (satoshi) is a very private person and wants to remain private. Well except the whole I am satoshi, look at me drama.

I wonder what was the bribe. Probably paid in BSV.  Roll Eyes

He then regretted for stating this BS, but I can't find the blog post.

It's funny how Gavin says that craig (satoshi) is a very private person and wants to remain private. Well except the whole I am satoshi, look at me drama.

I added Gavin to the list because he managed to keep bitcoin running between 2011 and 2014 - no small feat.
I don't know about his current views on that event. Perhaps he is keeping quiet due to possibilities that he may have been 1) paid, 2) signed an NDA, or 3) doesn't want further backlash from any community for saying more, like lawsuits, especially when they appear frivolous. He at least regrets being involved (2016): http://gavinandresen.ninja/either-or-ignore

Quote from: Gavin
Now that six months have gone past, I’m being asked if I still think Craig Wright was Satoshi.

I think there are two possibilities.

Either he was Satoshi, but really wants the world to think he isn’t, so he created an impossible-to-untangle web of truths, half-truths and lies. And ruined his reputation in the process.

If he was Satoshi, we should respect his wish to remain anonymous, and ignore him.

The other possibility is he is a master scammer/fraudster who managed to trick some pretty smart people over a period of several years.

In which case everybody except the victims of his fraud and law enforcement working on behalf of those victims should ignore him.

So, either he was or he wasn’t. In either case, we should ignore him. I regret ever getting involved in the “who was Satoshi” game, and am going to spend my time on more fun and productive pursuits.
Gavin's words in 2016, despite his regret, might still even today convince people of Craig being Satoshi.
Craig always sounds to me exactly like an in-law who said that he bought bitcoin back in 2003 "back before the other company bought them". He sounds convincing but you'd have to ignore a lot to believe him..

Bitcoin hero? Hmmm I think that guy who bought Pizza with 10,000 Btc and that pizza merchant who accepts Btc as payment lol just kidding. Though these people  may somehow help Bitcoin to be recognized as a currency early that year.

The real Bitcoin hero are those who believe and stays and will continue to support Bitcoin until it will be widely accepted anywhere in the world. I know there were also those people who worked hard to help Bitcoin to be recognized, but without us as the investors and believers Bitcoin will not going to be this successful.

Who is your bitcoin hero?

My former neighboor who bought BTC in 2011 and sold in 2018  Grin

Sold in 2018 with what price?  Please tell me not during the sharpest dip lol.

If you place Satoshi on a different class which I believe he should be, there are alot of people on the second row of bitcoin heroes and down to all users.
There are alot of heroes in this space that has made disclosed and undisclosed sacrifices in this place, even here in the forum.
I consider all the btc donors here, even the recent Dave gesture to Ukraine.
There are heroes who go about educating people about Bitcoin.
The ones with big passion that bought pizza with btc that gave it high publicity.
The likes of Gmaxwell, Theymos, Cobra, Sirus and many more.
The ones that provide technical help in the technical section like LoyceV, o_e_l_e_o, and even the self acclaimed anti hero franky1 and many more users are all heroes of bitcoin.

Can you clarify this? Is Dave a person? Do you have a link?
I've added the others.

+1 for Hal being the face of bitcoin. My image of him will always be a high school football star with Atlas Shrugged under his arm.

I agree with your opinion, themos is a hero of btc, who has kept this forum, then people who dare to hold bitcoin and always invest in bitcoin, under any circumstances, they are also true heroes of bitcoin, without anyone daring to hold bitcoin for sure bitcoin is not will be popular until now, and it is impossible for people to dare to invest in bitcoin, my real heroes in bitcoin are everyone in this forum, who have taught me about bitcoin world.

Who is your bitcoin hero?
the one below is my Bitcoin Hero

Early investors, believers, 0Gs
The community
This forum and its users
Friends and neighbors who introduce bitcoin

without a solid community then bitcoin would be impossible for the size it is today. I got to know bitcoin when I searched for it self-taught on google, then accidentally I found this forum in 'search'. this forum is really awesome with amazing people too, nice to join here.

+1 for Hal being the face of bitcoin.
I tend to agree, this dude deserves to be called a Hero of all heroes in Bitcoin.
Hal Finny was here since the Bitcoin forum was created and he contributed a lot to this forum sometimes I may think that he deserves to call and has a right to claim as a satoshi.

I always think that those who spend large sums of Bitcoin before also can be called a Hero, the pizza man, and also the forum member donators contributed Bitcoin for the sake of the forum that was created by the creator of Bitcoin.

There are a lot of them who deserve a Hero badge.

I don't find him a Hero, but what he does is a really needed one for the ongoing market. This can be connected to the adoption, investment, trust, real-time usage, etc. For this I choose Micheal Saylor. The decisions he took in buying and accumulating bitcoin have made a big change among the institutional investors. Following his activities there were more number of billionaires and their firms into bitcoin investment. At some point there were discussions stating such huge accumulation could lead to manipulation of market, but the same has caused positive move on the cryptomarket.

Bitcoin seems to attract extremely talented people. Many are already mentioned here but I want to mention a few more.

I would like to start with Con Kolivas to this list, an Australian anaesthetist that gave us cgminer and the solo mining pool ckpool. He's known here in the forum as -ck. I would say he has been extremely influential in the Bitcoin world. Almost the entire mining industry adopted cgminer in one way or another, and even these days ckpool keeps finding blocks.

Open source has benefited Bitcoin immensely. This is a good opportunity to also acknowledge jgarzik who published the CPU Bitcoin miner that would eventually be forked by -ck and turned into cgminer. Also of course there's the great work of kano who has contributed many things, like cgminer's API which enabled the creation of multiple miner dashboards, and is the current maintainer of cgminer, adding support for the latest GekkoScience Compac F, which were created by the talented sidehack. There's also all the great work done by Luke-Jr with bfgminer, and other projects like Bitcoin Core development and keeping alive a lot of tools and projects like a graph of the number of Bitcoin nodes, and others.

Mike Caldwell gave us the casascius coins, creating a whole industry of physical bitcoins and bitcoin related art. There's a lot of people in that space that have created amazing things, like kialara for example.

There are of course a lot more people that should be mentioned here, but I think I made the point already. The more I learn about Bitcoin, the more I realize this space is filled with a huge and diverse group of extremely talented people. Bitcoin is a great technology, but what makes it absolutely amazing is the people that are involved in it.

Can you clarify this? Is Dave a person? Do you have a link?
I've added the others.

I kind of thought your list would stick to some names relevant to Bitcoin history, but it seems like your list of heroes could get as long as time goes on Wink

Who is your bitcoin hero?

My bitcoin hero is no other than my friend who introduced me to this forum back in 2017.

I remember the conversation we had when we were talking about watches. I told him that I wanted to purchase this $200 Seiko watch in which he approved of my taste. Since I was only a college student at that time and earning money (via part-time jobs) was not in my radar at that time, he quickly introduced me to this forum and the potential of earning BTCs every weekly by participating into campaign signatures.

Because of my friend, he opened the doors for me to purchase not only books but educational materials for my general use. I literally owe him everything- though it is kinda sad to see him being inactive in this forum.

Who's to say that DaveF isn't already part of bitcoin history? Wink

I am happy to include specific names at this point. The shout outs are heart-warming. If the list becomes limited later, then I'll deal with it then (or not).

I'm now reading user comments in this thread and come to the conclusion that I can't single out one or more of them as my bitcoin hero. I understand when people name famous figures from bitcoin world or hyperactive bitcointalk users (or administration) and I don't rule out that they really had a very big influence on someone that some are ready to call them their bitcoin hero. I want to say that, in my opinion, it is not entirely correct to single out one hero, because I believe that everyone who in one way or another was related to the creation, development, popularization of BTC contributed to the future and he is already a hero. Also, each user on this forum has brought, albeit a small, but a piece to the bitcoin community and therefore deserves praise. Someone more, someone less. That's not the point.
I see it as if billions of drops of water form an ocean and bitcoin looks exactly like this, where the ocean is bitcoin, and the drops are each of bitcoin users. Perhaps I will voice an unpopular idea that even Satoshi with his creation would mean nothing without a bitcoin users community because it was these people who breathed life into bitcoin with their faith in it.

I've not read or heard the story of all those nominated except that of Hal Finney and Laszlo Hanyecz, so between this two, Hal Finney is the hero for me.
And also this forum and its users are all bitcoin heros for me, alot have been done by this forum and it's users that have helped bitcoin become what it is today.
And also, the bitcoin community at large, most especially those that contributed in one way or the other to increase the popularity of bitcoin, this could be by introducing bitcoin to their neighbors, friends, families, etc, teaching them how to buy and sell bitcoin, all this people are all my bitcoin heros.

Who is your bitcoin hero?

Who do you look up to in this space, or think is the most amazing person within the bitcoin world?

I think Sirius - Martti Malmi is mine. Here's a kid still in college who risked for a venture that he wouldn't know would work. He was willing to be open with others across the world. He lost bitcoin trying to be honest, as far as I can tell, with others when running the first exchanges.

============================
Heroes nominated in these threads (actively edited):

Hal Finney
Sirius / Martti Malmi
Laszlo Hanyecz
Theymos
Andreas Antonopoulos
Gavin Andresen
Greg Maxwell
Cobra
Michael Saylor

Actually, the members you listed have had a significant impact on the Bitcoin world and cryptocurrency in general. A real Hero is always active, supportive, and willing to assist when required. Many of these folks have persuaded me to reconsider my previous belief that cryptocurrency is a ponzi scam, and they have persuaded me to believe in Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in general.
There are undoubtedly some excellent idols to be ranked. More are still accessible, and I realize it's impossible to list them all. I'd like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone of my heroes.
