When I quote someone I'm replying to I mostly delete the stuff that doesn't pertain to what I'm about to write.

Is that okay? Do people around here get annoyed at being quoted out of context?

I don't see many members doing it, but should I be using some kind of explicit marker like "~snip~" or "..."?

Thanks, all opinions welcome Smiley

You should avoid nested quotes as much as possible especially when nested quotes are unnecessary. Sometimes, you must quote original one in full version in order to help readers get its context and meaning.

Mostly, nested quotes are unnecessary.

That's okay. Though i dont get annoyed of it, except quoting the whole long text from the first quoted reply to the 4th replies lol. I usually seen this on gambling boards. Seems many users there are tired or just lazy doing the simple deleting those nested quoted replies.

There's no preferred way to do it IMO but the recommended way is what you have mentioned. Only quote the phrase/text that you want to respond/reply.

What i usually do is just use "/..." as snip if necessary and everyone has their own version of it.

I don't see how that would be quoting out of context, except of course the user clarified that quoted part in other parts of their reply.
Ideally, you read the whole text before quoting a select part.

I don't see many members doing it, but should I be using some kind of explicit marker like "~snip~" or "..."?
People have different preferences, but as long as you're not quoting wall of texts or images you are doing it just fine.
I believe snip or blank text quote markers, are best used when the reply you're quoting is right above yours and you're replying to the whole text. It would be relatively easy for anyone to read.

IMO, people (including me) don't like it if a user only quoted a part their post and replied to it without considering the whole post.
So, the quotation of a small part isn't the issue there: it's the reply; as long as it's proper, it's good.

Sometimes, I even -snip- the whole post but keep the [quote][/quote] tags to show that I'm replying to that particular post.

Quote part of the reply that is you wanted to emphasize or quoted each so it would be more neat and pleasant. Sometimes all quoting all the wall of words which isnt good since he will only pertain to a small portion of that wall.

As I noticed mostly doing that especially the lazy one. But if you understand how it would fit on replies then quote it by piece.

Personally, I don't like quoting in block. I tend to snip out unnecessary part and go straight to business of my response. Sometimes I just boldface the part of interest so that it won't look confusing to those reading my response to a particular comment or skew it to seem out of context. I don't mind too how people quote me, provided they don't distort my comment to favour a misleading narrative.

My judgment of those who quote in block is that they aren't well tutored, it doesn't matter their ranks. I classify them as noob posters.

It really just depends on the context. It sucks and is definitely annoying when quote you out of context, but it is what it is.

As for the snip thing, I use it sometimes, but it really isn't that much of a big deal imo. People can click on the Quote link and view the entire uncut reply anyway.

Aside from what @nc50lc said, IMO you don't need to think too much about it since AFAIK many member either don't care or doesn't mind how their post is quoted/snipped.

I don't see many members doing it, but should I be using some kind of explicit marker like "~snip~" or "..."?

It's up to you. But when i try to quote 2 phrase on different place, i prefer to use 2 separate quote rather than explicit marker on a quote tag.

Code:
[quote]
Sentence 1 on Paragraph 1.
[/quote]

[quote]
Sentence 3 on Paragraph 3.
[/quote]

My response.

snip/ ... / ~snip~

All works just fine. I usually snip posts of certain user whose messages are kind of repetitive to avoid clogging the entire page of the thread. And to make it easier for other people who want to view the entire text, don't forget to include the link to the particular post you quoted.

Code:

You can quote posts in locked topics too.

For example, if this topic is lock and you want to quote this post, how to do this?
Let's use
Code:
[quote author=tranthidung link=topic=5408277.msg60668242#msg60668242 date=1659361127]

[/quote]
With date is converted from https://www.epochconverter.com/ by typing exact month, date, year, hours and click on Human date to Timestamp. Then you will get this number in Epoch timestamp: 1659361127. Use this number for date=1659361127

You can verify it by click on quote button, you will get the same code

Varies  Roll EyesSmiley/ Cry/$$/__/~~!!/??/√√~snip~£ some consider it humorous, some consider it serious and some consider it a joke, but those who quote already understand the concept and answers to the question/topic.

Sometimes I also often do this, it doesn't mean that the person doing it is annoyed or annoying, the point is that the answer is right and in accordance with the question asked.

Not a problem if you do, you can do anything for a quote like that, point to point.

It depends on the context, but it's mostly up to you how you want to quote the post you're replying to. You can quote the whole thing (if it's not a wall of text), or just the part you're referring to. You can quote either way as long as you are not quoting out of context, so that it appears to mean something different from what was intended. The thing I absolutely hate is when people quote long posts, especially if they include images, only to add some random crap at the end. This is really annoying and ruins the flow of the whole discussion.

I think it should be encouraged. It keeps things shorter and easier to read for everyone.

Additionally, if you're quoting separate lines and replying to them individually it can do better for avoiding obscurity/ambiguity.

I think you should only mark things if you think there's important context cues you've cut off or you've made a quote by splitting two related sentences in a paragraph so they're together (if they're different but similar enough to reply to in one block).

I don't see anything wrong with snipping the quoted posts and I never saw anyone complaining about improper quoting. Anything that helps to keep the forum more readable is good. And huge nested quotes are quickly turning any thread into a mess.

Sometimes people, including myself go as far as to edit the quoted text with bold or italics just to stress some key words. I find it perfectly acceptable too.

I think everyone one of us do that at times. To snip off a few text just to make emphasise on our area of concern and bring it to the spotlight too. That to me doesn't mean quoting someone out of context, I think the narrative that follows or you give your explanation is what could mean your quoting someone out of context.

It becomes necessary to read and understand the heading for which the user whom to have made the comment was making and then, you respond in a way that tackles that narrative. It gets personal for sme to have been quote out of context but, I think the best measure to a better understanding is further explanation and put the responses to a quote at right to avoid a wrong narrative.
