Anyways to gain more merits you need to know what is this forum all about and also to gain you need to post a quality and helpful thread or reply. OP, this isn't the right motive that a newbie like you ought to have. First off, you need to ask questions relating to the things you need to know about the forum or Bitcoin because everyone who is in this forum will be of help to you in terms of helping you with the right answers to help you get the knowledge you need to grow as a newbie. Explore the forum first so you will have ideas how to create quality posts. Because even if you are a newbie, as long as you know well about the topic you started, you can get merits as well if you create a useful post that will leave good benefits to your other forum members. Always do your research, so you will gain more great ideas and information to share to the forum. And never resort into plagiarism, you will be banned in the forum.

Do not be too obsessed with merits OP, knowledge should be your first aim so you can be an asset in the forum. Once you have gained the knowledge already, and you are aware on how the forum runs, you will get used to it posting relevant posts, merits then will follow. I would assume the question to be a basic newbie question, nothing bad or offensive or suspicious or improper about it. That newbie must have started exploring the features of this forum.

And it isn't a wonder that a newbie finds out about the merit system. After all, it is indicated in our profile and in every post.

What is rather improper and unfair is to judge right away that merit is what motivates a newbie for joining when in fact he/she, being a newbie, is simply asking about it.

I was thinking about how to answer OP's question, but then I saw your post and realized that you voiced roughly what thoughts I had. Short and clear, enough for understanding, but will newcomers understand, because as soon as they appear on the forum, they immediately begin to ask questions, the answers to which have been discussed many times and are easily accessible. And all you need to do is look through the sections that are relevant to the topic and find all the necessary answers. Bitcointalk is a unique knowledge base and useful information that you just need not to be lazy to look for. In the discussion here, links to the necessary topics have already been given, so I will not duplicate and I would like to believe that OP will look through them. From myself I can add that in order to get something (merit), need to give something away (time / energy). So just nothing is given, both online and offline. You always need to make efforts and diligence, both in finding answers to your questions, and in getting merit.  I believed the OP is asking the merit base on the orientation gotten from the source of his or her information about the forum, that is the person who introduced the forum gave the OP is the caused of all these questions. I don't think the OP will have a good reason of asking the merits if not to rank up and join campaign. Look at this, why a newbie asking of merit instead of reading and learning. When a real newbie comes to the forum and ready to learn, it is very clear to identify them. They ask reasonable questions and learn things from the forum and earn merits from the learning process. Although mistake is inevitable. That not withstanding. OP you can earn merit when you post quality post and make a reasonable comments to educate people.

What you need is basic knowledge of cryptocurrency and an understanding of how this forum works but merit giving to posts that are useful, quality or solve someone's issue.
Meanwhile, making useful posts also doesn't mean you'll be giving merit because merit is given independently. However, you can report your unmerited useful posts here

Don't be too hard with newbies! He just registered this month, we can understand if he still has a lack of knowledge related to forum issues. The focus of this forum isn't merit. Merit was introduced bearly four years ago to encourage more meaningful post and contribution here. Let me guess, I think that the person who taught OP about bitcointalk forum is a bounty hunter because of the actions that OP is doing even though he just created or registered an account few days ago. I also think it's pointless to help OP since he is already inactive for 10 days although it would be helpful for other newbies out there.

First, OP wanted to know how merit is earn which he used the word gotten which made me think right away that someone taught him about earning money by joining bounties in this forum starting from how to earn merits and ad we know, it is one of the requirements needed to rank up.

Second, newbies that is brought here for some reason that he/she intended to learn more then the very first thing that person did is read read read read read until that person learned instead of merits, ranking up and asking if ever a participant will get a merit but what kind of participant is it anyway?. The answer to this I believe it's either a bounty participant or participant in a thread started where you can participate and complete s given task and if you managed to complete the task then you will earn a merit. In short, a participant in a merit giveaway threads. The words in the quote below is I think the reason why I think of OP that way.

However, I probably want to share with you how we can actually search for the topics that we want to know in this forum. For example, merit. You can simply go to the "search" column in the home section and type the keyword that you want to search, or just click the "search" button beside the "help" button in the home section for advanced search features.




You can actually search it first before making a thread buddy cause I'm sure for this simple topic, there are many people who have discussed it here. Just my 2 cents, and enjoy your time in this forum buddy.

The search function on this forum helps very quickly in finding answers to specific questions, especially such general questions about merits that have already been answered a thousand times over the past few years.
However, the same questions are asked over and over again and this is why the discussion on this forum dies down, because people get bored reading the same topics over and over again.

You can get them either by means of helpful topics and answers, news, sharing Bitcoin adoption related stories, reporting scammers, etc.

But don't expect that every post mentioned above can guarantee you some merit. That's not how it works.

You'll treat merit as a bonus perk or unexpected blessing. Never beg for merits. And also never have a mindset of posting here just for the sake of merits. You'll get frustrated for sure with that kind of mindset.

Just be helpful without expect anything in return. One day you'll get there and achieve like the experienced. Coz' before we got this rank, we were used to be newbies like you too.

There are many ways of getting merit and Yes that's right and that is one of the requirements to earn merit but not just that because the main thing to earn merits is the word (CONTRIBUTION) if we have a good contribution for this forum by posting a good reply then achievement will be follow.  Also there are many users here in forum who gave their merits by a task or let say that free merits to those users who complete the task by the OP.

Both high-quality posts and thoughtful responses to other people's posts merit consideration. But most importantly, put merit aside and learn whatever it is that you want to learn in this forum if you want to learn. Once you have a thorough understanding of the forum, merits will follow.
The more knowledge you share in the forum, the more Merits you will receive as a reward for your good work.

This is exactly how everything happens, but at first, when you just figure out what and how it works, then at this moment the greatest desire to earn merit and grow in rank. People here and there have posted their meriting criteria, such as on this recent thread. Reading through may provide further insights, although bear in mind that people have likely conceptual criteria, but things are nor written in stone.

But it seems that I may have to scrap 95% of the above quote in light of some meriting criteria I just saw, which has nothing to do with what I wrote above (nor the intent of the Merit System). I figure that the part concerning that earning a few merits should not deem difficult remains true (even more so); it’s surpassing a certain threshold that is.

I just saw a similar thread on meta just minutes ago although this one is much older but, the subject always comes back everytime with every newbie or beginner that claims to be curious over what are merits, how are they gotten, what's regarded for a quality post and how to grow in the ranks.

As the forums might have it, merits prompts users to put in work in delivering better post quality, being informative and be a good learner.
It is very limited, the smerit that is gotten from allocations and earned merits are very much useless to the holder but, that doenst in any way means, its to be given just anyhow. That would be an abuse abuse won't help the system to archive its aims.

@OP, be active and contribute to forum development and you won't have to ask questions on how to earn or what are merits.

And when such questions arise there must be ready hundreds of answers available to the question raiser. Only a few will provide genuine answer. Others would be some signature spammers who wants to complete their weekly posting quotas, some will just repeat what was said in the first pages of the thread. The day I took out my time to read all thread pages, I was surprised to see what goes behind the pages.
