You're a professional like a lawyer or a teacher in a respected university, will it harm your reputation if people around you or your students discover that you are into gambling, you're not really a compulsive gambler but gamble for entertainment, how will you explain this to people around you or will you explain to protect your reputation or just ignore them.
this depends on where the gambler is, if in my country of course social law applies because gambling is something that is still prohibited by the government and is also taboo here

then every gambler (no matter if he is a lecturer, lawyer or even a religious leader) will be immediately labeled as someone who is useless and also a criminal when people find out about his gambling activities and can be immediately fired from where he works

There's nothing bad if they know you're into gambling but it's immaturity to show or display it all over you that you gamble, then it also depends onbthe settings you find yourself, if you sense mentioning that you're into gambling can look off amidst your cliques or in a professional settings, then no need of causing nuisance by the mention of gambling, they take that as a ground to distrust you in anything that has to do with handling finances and thaay brings down your reputation, it's very important to study the environment at first and to have caution to every words been uttered from the mouth.

you're not really a compulsive gambler but gamble for entertainment, how will you explain this to people around you or will you explain to protect your reputation or just ignore them.

If you're desciplined enough, you will know how and when to maintain self-control that won't jeopardize your integrity amidst people.

I don't think that their opinions matter whether you're gambling or not as long as your gambling activities do not affect your professional career. However, there are instances, especially for teachers where some schools require them not to be involved in any gambling-related institution which one must follow. Other than that, I don't think that their opinion matter as well as you don't need to explain your self to anyone about your gambling activities.

I don’t think my students deserve my explanation. There’s no wrong in gambling as long as it’s not affecting my job and I’m not crossing lines like teaching gambling to my students. Gambling is widely known to make people entertained, and I think I’m not gambling for profits but purely for fun so there’s no reason that it will be a big issue against me. If there is any, just ignore them, I don’t have to get affected on it.

I personally wouldn't care at all. It would even be better for me to let them know about the nature of my hobby and let them understand that if done properly, it won''t affect anything regarding my finances and life. Sometimes people need education in order to understand the things that they don't know about. It's a lot easier to do that rather than be judged based on what they do. It might even promote updstanding citizens if they checked all sides of the before before casting their judgment on someone.

if people around you or your students talk about you playing gambling and as long as it doesn't hurt your reputation, let it be. but if they talk about you and drop you just because you play gambling, maybe you need to tell the reason you are gambling slowly and in detail so that they understand that you are playing gambling just for entertainment and to fill your spare time.
but if that happened to me i'd probably stay silent as long as they didn't affect my work.

In such situation I'll find way to keep it as a secret. If it is known by the students or the coworkers I won't take it serious. Because I know I have the control and never ruin life out of it. Another thing gambling have turned to be very common in my country, and my gambling activity isn't gonna affect my reputation as my skills on teaching and my relationship with the students is valued against my personal interests and activities involved.

As long as you are a professional and your students know that you can teach very well, even the school authority will not say anything since you don't leave your work to gamble, you gamble at your own leisure time. Even if you are a lawyer and you are good in it,you will even get more client. These days what matters to people is what you can offer or what value are you adding in your office or working place.

I have a friend he is a teacher and he loves gambling on sportbet,, his Headmistress and colleagues knew he gambles because all the time he needs money, they didn't send him away instead they called him and adviced him on gambling but he didn't stop. Nothing could be done because he is a professional teacher, the only thing they did was to withdraw anything about finance from his possession.

So If the disturbances is much, you just ignore them and continue with your profession. Anyway it all depends if gambling is illegal in your country.

I'd say it was for fun, and just passing time. but for me, I think it will not hurt if anyone would see you going outside a casino, and if you are adult enough to do things your way then there is nothing to worry about I think it is surely based on a person if you are conscious enough about your reputation I think it will not hurt your reputation that much, as long as you are not doing bad things to people then there is nothing to be afraid of,

I say if you are mostly worried about your reputation then do not gamble at all, you don't have to explain anything just because you are playing gambling, but for me, because you are worried about anything that people will be misguided by you just playing gambling I think there is an option where you can play gambling online and you can also play anonymously so your identity and reputation will be safe,

As far as I'm concerned, gambling has nothing to do with your reputation individually thou, religiously it affect your reputation since majority of religious practice prohibited it. If you are doing it for fun then, there's nothing to conceal about it. Explain to them how entertain it is and make it clear. Remember that the moment you start hiding the truth from them and they eventually discover it your reputation is lost already.

It's probably not something you want to advertise if you're in one of those professions, but there is a big difference between the two you just offered as examples. Lawyers might work in relatively small and sometimes isolated scenarios, where they might just be in touch with a few other colleagues of similar stature and lots of admin staff doing lower level jobs. If it is done simply for fun, then nobody will care although it may just be a hobby to keep private anyway. If you're a teacher you might be in more of an unstable and vulnerable position, it could be used by students or even other staff members to cause problems for you, again there is little reason to be sharing such details because it will not help you in any way.

Why should you explain your gambling habit to others? Regardless if you are working in any field, you shouldn't pay attention to what others will think of you just because you do gambling as long as you are still responsible in your everyday life.

I know there might be conflicts between gambling and work-related but who are they to bother with our own life?

My life, my rules. As long as I don't involve others in my gambling activity, everything is fine.

It can affect your career only if you tell them that you are into gambling and if you are being greedy in gambling, probably you can lose a lot of money here. Well, public workers are not allowed to gamble so once they caught probably they can lose job and face another case from the government. We should be the image of our students and followers, don’t make any action that can ruin their trust to us and I think that is more important than gambling.

Almost anything in moderation and in one's own personal life shouldn't really impact others. A problem gambler like anything though is a different story.

But in the description given, that's just a nothing burger.

You're a professional like a lawyer or a teacher in a respected university, will it harm your reputation if people around you or your students discover that you are into gambling, you're not really a compulsive gambler but gamble for entertainment, how will you explain this to people around you or will you explain to protect your reputation or just ignore them.

It depends on your profession. If you are a teacher, you are held to higher standards. The university you are working in might not want that their teacher or professor is gambling. You are molding young minds and students sometimes view their teachers as their models.

Otherwise, you can gamble as you want, and you can share it as you like.

I do not have the obligation to explain myself to others regarding my gambling habits. It is just for entertainment as you said. Unless I am already addicted and that gambling is already detrimental to my profession, I do not have to explain anything to anyone.

It might even promote updstanding citizens if they checked all sides of the before casting their judgment on someone.
I truly value this comment as it contains all the ingredients on public judgment on individuals in the society and cooperate bodies, the truth is one needs to arrive at a stage where what the public stereotypes judgment and opinion is doesn't matter to you anymore as long as you carry your life and responsibility accurately whatever your personal life is doesn't matter. And there is a need for adequate understanding before judgment because people do things according to their experiences in life so costing a stone before verification and information always leads to poor judgment.

Unless a law is already past I. Such behavior and judgment given.

I think the world has grown pass that stereotype. We now live in an open society where even religious leaders exercise themselves  on things that seemed too awkward in years past. One can gamble and still maintain their reputation its a matter of how the go about their gambling activity. The goal is been responsible after all. If one gamble for entertainment irrespective of their discipline it's their personal life and the have every right to stay happy, if the derive joy from gambling

For me, it's more about how your gambling activities affect your reputation as a professional rather than stereotype. If you are what OP said which is a gambler who does just for entertainment purposes and it doesn't affect your work as a teacher or a lawyer, then there should be no reason for it to cause any issue to anyone around you. However, if you're a compulsive gambler in such as case it even affects your work and the people you work with, then people around you as well as a society might judge you and will cause more trouble to you and your profession.

One must not affect their gambling activities to their professional activities as it will cause conflict in both activities.

As a professional they looked up to you if you are a lawyer might as well keep it to yourself, there's competition in a court battle and they might use that issue and if you're a teacher it's okay to let them know that you are gambling you can even give your students lessons about how to become responsible gambling, it really depends on the profession you're holding and of course the location, it's a big no to expose yourself if you are working in a financial section of a company they might suspect you if there's a financial issue in your company, so better think if exposing will be to your disadvantages.

I don't mind looking at that person and sees it as part of his recreational activity and just does it for fun.
But, we can't stop the taboo on that part from those people that sees bad to the people that are gambling.
It's a matter of their belief to the people who gambles even they're professional people. It can't be stopped but not everyone will look at it as it is something bad.
