I think people who have dignity or a college degree will gamble in an isolated place in the sense that they will look at their surroundings before they gamble. but like everyone else they sometimes neglect reputation in order to be able to get entertainment in their spare time and this tends not to be a big problem for someone who has a good reputation in the community. I have met many people like this, even among them there are those who like to chat with their students at the same time they are playing gambling.

Where I live it wouldn't be a big deal if a, let's say, a student saw me in a casino. Professional groups like teachers, doctors, or lawyers don't make a big deal out of it since it's legal. If they saw me in a brothel it would be pretty much the same. Maybe if they saw me in a brothel and I had a wife it would become an popular rumor, but they wouldn't fire me because of it.

In modern societies gambling is seen more like smoking. Many people don't smoke and don't like smokers but you don't fire people because they're heavy smokers.

Sure, you probably won't get fired, but the relationship with your students might be different after they see you.

They had an idea in their heads and then seeing you there, or smoking, etc, changes that perception.

I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad thing, but they will see you differently.

when I was in school, I still remember very well when I argued with my teacher who forbade us male students to smoke, while the teacher was also a heavy smoker lol

After all, the teacher is a role model for every student, when they do stupid things such being a gambler, smoker or others, the students who are with them will definitely underestimate the teacher because his reputation is already bad

People who don't like gambling, are very likely to judge gambling isn't a necessary thing or even a bad thing. They probably won't respond with an expected answer/friendly statement. Because of the high possibility of bad impacts from sharing it, it is better to keep a secret for our gambling activities. I also did it, since I feel more comfortable.

^ This question will depend on which country you are from and if you are abiding by the law because of the gambling while you are a professional which I think has an effect on your reputation. But if not, it is legal and your purpose is for entertainment, why not? I have a lot of professors who gamble when after their class, but it won't affect their reputation because they gamble only after work or on weekends. There is nothing wrong with me if a professional will gamble as long as in a legal way and the amount that can afford.

At the end of work or duty in a day people do various activities to keep their mind fresh, some one likes to drink, smoke, gambling and various things. It doesn't  matter what the teacher or professors have done it is their personal interest. If they can do those things within control then it will never harm for the reputation.

It depends on the society you live in, there are places where people view gamblers as irresponsible people and would not approve that of a teacher who’s supposed to be a model for their kids at I recently read a book The Summons, where the town’s Judge disguises and sneaks into casinos in the early hours of the day when they are less customers and plays poker, sometimes even goes to other cities to avoid getting caught by the town people who revere him. The world is a judgmental place, there are institutions that have a ethos that prohibits their members from gambling activities.

Weird that most of the professions that you've mentioned are mostly the people I am seeing when I'm gambling on a casino and I even have some gambling friends who are soldiers, lawyers and politicians. They may not be allowed to gamble while on duty or on uniform however when they're out of work, they are allowed to do whatever they whether it's gambling or not.

I don't see any effects or changes on their image whether they gamble or not as long as it doesn't effect their work. They also have the same freedom as ours when they are not on duty.

You really have to be careful about who you tell in these scenarios and there is no need to tell any of your colleagues about such things. If you must share it then find some friends outside of work or make some by participating in a new activity. Sometimes people are religious and might look down on you (who cares) for taking part in gambling, but if they have a position of authority over you then it just makes it more awkward for the future. You don't need to share every little aspect of your life. It can also invite accusations later down the line, if some kind of theft goes on for example, they might use it as a (totally false) indicator that you could be part of it.

I don't need to explain anything to people.  I know what I am doing and explaining them about my personal activities seems off to me.  Besides, I do not have to prove myself to them since they don't bother proving their point of view towards me.  I just let them think whatever they think is right and just prove myself through actions since it speaks better that words.

It wouldn't do your reputation any good. I think it can do more damage than people can imagine. And I don't just mean the comments and esteemed students, I'm also talking about the management of the school. If they find out that a professor/teacher is gambling frequently, they also know that this takes a lot of time and that in turn can lead to problems with concentration and as a result of which one is no longer able to to function properly.

Now, now, we are creating an assumption that the person involved is neglecting his duty, definitely it will affect his reputation but if the person still do his duty as a teacher or as a professional deligently, I do not think it matters if the person has a gambling habit.

Even a person who isn't involved in gambling doing such thing as you stated can have their reputation affected because they already underperforming.

Maybe far fetched, but you could get a warning or in some cases even a dismissal. These are things that certainly happen in the business world, and not just among teachers. The track record of a teacher is of course also taken into account.

An employee that is not doing his duty will have warnings and eventually a dismissal if he doesn't change.  But I never seen any person who is involved in gambling but working perfectly fine being kicked out of a company.

in every walk of life - play safe. .. try to follow the legal way so that if you are in trouble and you are right you can fight for your rights.
However in my country - people are not much scared of police and law enforcement agencies because they are taking bribe and helping people who are wrong.
BUt I would alway like to keep myself away from all the things which will put me in trouble.

We do all wish and hope for a peaceful living which it would really be just right that we would be finding up ways on how to make ourselves avoid on possible problems that might cause or might be experienced ahead.
There's no wrong on things that we do as long it is legal.There are just some people who do really just easy to judge on whatever things you are involving with specially with gambling.

Each people have skeletons in their closet in which they don't want other people to know of because of the reason that it can taint their reputation. We all have that certain bad experience or mistake we don't are not ready to share with anyone because of the judgment that we might get from it. Hence, some people believe that there are specific things better left unsaid so that it won't cause trouble/s.

I agree with what you said that livelihood and the status of someone's life depends on his reputation. Of course, if you have good reputation, most people will like you and opportunities will go your way. Majority of the businesses, employers, and people in general do not want to be involved with someone with bad character and tainted reputation because it can damage them as well. When you feel like the boat will sink, you definitely won't board in it.

Gambling has been painted bad in the mainstream media because most of the time, the consequences of it are highlighted. We can't really blame the people by thinking that way. Instead of getting into trouble because people know we are gambling, we should keep it to ourselves and tell other people. That will ensure that we are not considered a mistake in playing gambling and we can freely play gambling without anyone knowing.

Interesting question. because after all, if I have a reputation as a person who is respected in the environment concerned, be it at home or in the work environment. For example, university teacher, whatever important position I hold will have a not-so-good stigma.
even if it's just part of the fun. but for sure, I won't explain it to anyone if they don't ask for an explanation personally.
for me, gambling is a fun activity even though it is high risk.

Gambling is something personal, without having to explain I think people should respect it in a non-judgmental way.
In this modern era, gambling is not something that is taboo.
