Bitcoin itself will survive a nuclear war, but it may become inaccessible, there will be a lot of destruction to properties and facilities (the internet services that was mentioned) at that point, and use cases of bitcoin may reduce due to the distabilation in the normal order of things, but soon after , if there are any survivors left, and the internet is restored, there is the possibility that those bitcoins that were inaccessible will become accessible.

You're assuming the worst which is a war that destroys everything, the whole infrastructure. The truth is in case of a nuclear war nobody would target countries that don't pose a threat.
Nobody would attack Australia because it's a remote land with no nuclear weapons. Even if a country that owns such weapons decided to take over Australia it would use conventional weapons to do so, knowing that irradiated land isn't fit for anything but dumping trash.

No.

Cash and fiat will be useless after a society-ending war. The only things that will have value will be the things that keep you alive:
  • Food
  • Fresh water
  • Medicine
  • Shelter
  • Bullets and other weapons

If you can't eat it, drink it, or use it to protect yourself from weather, disease, and hostile people or animals, then it's pretty useless.

First of all I hope the world don't have to experience any nuclear war.
Now assuming there is a nuclear war, and this things you mentioned are in high demand, definitely not every war affected areas will have these life saving things, so in other for those who are in shortage of then to have access they may have to buy it or exchange for something else, hence fiat will be quite useful in this scenario.
For you to have weapons, food, medicines, clean water and other important stuff to sustain lives through that difficult period, you will have to either buy them or get them somehow and am pretty sure you will need fiat.

What do you think about it? I read this article in the Market Times https://markettimes.co.uk/cryptocurrencies/would-bitcoin-survive-a-nuclear-war/ and in my opinion I don't see a future 'cause to have access to the bitcoin you need internet

If a global nuclear war occurs, then there will be problems that will have to be solved first of all for the preservation and maintenance of vital activity so as not to be thrown back a century and it seems that the restoration of the blockchain will not be a priority. mining and especially cryptocurrency exchanges.

It may but bitcoin would be the last thing you would worry about during a nuclear war. Even if it survives the Armageddon, I can guarantee you that the crypto prices won't look pretty which basically the whole point for most people. If you can call that surviving, yes it will survive just like how crypto survived mt.Gox before. A nuclear war will probably be much worse than the mt.Gox incident though keep that in mind. You should buy a bunker, dry food, water and other shit which people would consume during a nuclear war instead of thinking about crypto.

Here is a simple descriptive answer to the OP's question from this source - A nuclear attack could cause substantial fatalities, injuries, and infrastructure damage from the heat and blast of the explosion, and significant radiological consequences from both the initial nuclear radiation and the radioactive fallout that settles after the initial event. An electromagnetic pulse from the explosion could also disrupt telecommunications and power distribution. The energy released by a nuclear explosion is distributed roughly as 50% shockwave; 35% heat; 5% initial nuclear radiation; and 10% fallout radiation. This distribution varies depending on the design of the weapon and the altitude of the explosion. In short, nothing would survive.

Would you survive nuclear war ?
- In the starting yes, if you live far enough to not get caught up in the radius of the radiation and follow the protocols.
Would the world survive nuclear war?
- No !
You must understand that the climate change that we all talk about won't just be climate change then the earth would collapse, countries will be wiped off, nothing will survive, no internet, no wifi, nothing, when we talk about bitcoins it's definitely not going to jump in and somehow help people with everything.
It will work, for people not in the radius, for people not going through the worse of it, but not 🚫 like how it did in the covid 19

If humans can't survive then how Bitcoin would survive? We all know what would happen if suddenly we face nuclear war. Everything will be collapsed and the world economy wouldn't survive. The same will happen for Bitcoin. People should be alive and survive first before anything else. We will need a lot of cash or fiat in case of nuclear war. So everyone will start the sale definitely to survive their life. We have to be ready to see Bitcoin collapse as well. No other option except to saving humans.

I think so too, so if there is a nuclear war, surely everyone will prioritize their daily needs first, and if people have bitcoins they will certainly sell them, if there is a nuclear war. and I think I would do the same in the event of a nuclear war.

Robots will monitor the health of the btcoin-network. Smiley

It seems to me that "a lot of cash or fiat" will not help in the event of a nuclear war, and it is necessary to stock up on canned food and medicines. That's what will be truly appreciated in those conditions. Any currencies will turn into useless candy wrappers, including crypto currencies and bitcoin.

But let's not talk about sad things and hope that we will see the conditions of a post-nuclear war only in films and science fiction stories. In real conditions, it will not be as "colorful and exciting", as Hollywood shows, and as already mentioned above, bitcoin is far from the first thing people will think about in those conditions.

Even if we imagine a nuclear happening all over the world people will still need to have some currency to do their trades and deals and if you imagine this situation you can understand that many people will need to save their money from the infraction rate which can happen because of the war and this investment option can be bitcoin for them because of being decentralized that's why I think bitcoin will easily survive a nuclear war and this war will even make more demand in bitcoin market.

I think once nuclear war breaks out, it will be World War 3, no country can stay out of the war because nowadays most countries have their allies, once your ally is attacked, the rest cannot sit still so it will activate worldwide. When the world war happens, I think bitcoin is no longer a matter of concern, we will have many things to take care of food, medicine and most importantly, our lives. If we are no longer alive, the existence of bitcoin will become meaningless.

No, even a Fiat would be useless. Let's imagine all the countries in the world are involved in this war, and everyone is not working. The economy doesn't work, then everyone has no money. So the transactions that are possible are barter, such as weapons for food, blankets with foods, and foods can be exchanged for shelter.

As others like Danny point out, it's pointless to argue about the value of something after structured society ends. If you can't use it to keep yourself alive and healthy and secure, it's the last thing on your list of priorities.

And we don't even really need to look for fantastical scenarios. In times of personal economic distress, would you be hoarding gold or buying up BTC? Even if at super bargain prices, you'll be paying through the nose for food to feed hungry kids, roof over heads, energy credits to keep warm, etc. You'll be selling whatever cash/fiat/crypto you've got to stay alive.

That's what most people still don't understand or will ever get when talking about "bargain BTC" and predicting how retail buyers will snap things up.

Dude, you talking about NUCLEAR war! That would be the time when you and me will have to find the shelter underground somewhere on the horizon to save our own asses man! Who would think about bitcoin and even dollar bill when people will be killing each other for food, water which is not radioactive.

Our own lives will be more important than the bitcoin or blockchain. There will be nothing available in the nuclear war. The only thing that will keep us going on is survival instinct. That’s all.

For sure the internet connection will be much affected and most provably all bitcoin users on affected area will start cashing out their hidden assets since they will prepare for something worse to come. But eventhough that case happens still I believe bitcoin will still survive since its just there it will never fade. Maybe for a while majority of people will focus to buy first the basic needs but once all get back to normal people will go back to what things they left then comeback to their investments and other personal matters.

It's not a matter of scale, even a small nuclear war from two smallest nuclear armed countries which is Pakistan and India, it would be enough to affect the whole world through radioactive fallout and extreme climate changes, I think that would be enough damage to our infrastructures, if by some miracle that we are still alive and we can maintain the Internet and the devices that store bitcoin then probably the answer to the question is that bitcoin would survive but in that scenario, bitcoin's probably the least of our worries as we are struggling to find survive the aftermath of a nuclear war.

Thanks for one of the few literate answers. Everything that is written here about the need for fiat money during a nuclear war, and so on, only speaks of how far people are and really do not understand the danger facing our world and lack of education. What the hell bitcoins, if there is a nuclear explosion, billions will die. But I see on the news that in the event of a nuclear attack, people are offered to stay at home, take off their outerwear if they come from the street, watch the news, and so on. And yes, they are still handing out iodine tablets. God, what nonsense.
It is very sad that the world is becoming illiterate, and people do not read history at all.

Effects of nuclear war.

  • Single nuclear bomb over a city could kill millions of people.
  • Nuclear bomb will be causing climatic changes and the same doesn't allow human survival.
  • Nuclear weapons can't be limited to specific locations. It affects beyond the target.
  • Health hazards happens and the same won't be treated by the physicians.
  • Radiation out of the nuclear weapons will be causing sickness and are uncontrollable.

This is the after effects the world experienced out of nuclear bombing. In such situation would bitcoin have survived. It survives, but there will be more things that are being prioritised in such situation.

A lot of people are very money oriented and they really want to know things like nuclear war won't have as big an impact on currencies like bitcoin. I dunno, I don't know if they are educated or not, and I guess people still want to know how things like this can be handled by bitcoin. However it becomes abnormal if they do not prioritize what is more important than bitcoin and that is themselves.

Well, the fact people still go for so many shitcoins and ponzi sites shows the (low) level of education already. We don't have to go for higher topics, like the effects of nuclear bombs.
But I think that Obito's answer is incorrect. The size, type, quantity, technology .. all that would matter. Keep in mind that there were the bombs at the end of WW2, there were many tests, there was the accident of Chernobyl and although I don't deny that there were a lot of loses that should have been easily avoided if humans would have been smarter, the humanity has survived.
Of course that in the calamity zone we cannot discuss about bitcoin. There would be no infrastructure, but more important (and sadly), no living humans to use that.
So it's good to see what people understand by nuclear war. 1-2 nukes or all hell breaking loose. Of course, in the second scenario there may remain no advanced creature left on Earth.

But I see on the news that in the event of a nuclear attack, people are offered to stay at home, take off their outerwear if they come from the street, watch the news, and so on.

Well, since they cannot outrun the first wave of radiation, panicking wouldn't do much good, isn't it?
Of course, those smart enough and lucky enough to be far enough from the blast should move farther. This would be the survival of the smarter and more fit (a combination opposed to "the fittest" Darwin teaches).

And yes, they are still handing out iodine tablets. God, what nonsense.

Many don't even understand that after a certain age those tablets may do more bad than good.

How do you mean bitcoin can't survive nuclear war, have you ever thought of human lives. Yes its true but if a man ( we human) can survive in any hard condition then there will be bitcoin, all we need is internet access and if there non then I don't think you can initiate any transaction without internet, and if there is war meaning there will be no internet access then bitcoin can be affected only without internet or if phone is stolen, or hardware is being misplaced probably the building being destroyed can get bitcoin holders affected.

Of course, if a nuclear war broke out, there would be two possibilities:
The first possibility: the destruction of the entire globe, and in this case there will be no Internet, no Bitcoin, no energy sources, not even humans or any form of human civilization.
The second possibility: destroying one hemisphere or large parts of it, in this case other parts remain that have the power and the internet and therefore bitcoin mining can continue and network transactions confirm even if there are very few miners still working, when the number of miners is low " Mining difficulty” drops dramatically and so the few will be enough to mine the rest of the bitcoin and audit network transactions.
