good evening everyone, I'm opening this topic because I didn't find any news about it on the forum, I'm looking for a new hardware wallet to give to a friend of mine, as I already know that he doesn't like my wallet that I'm using, I searched in around new solutions, and I found this wallet

https://dcentwallet.com

My questions is:
Does anyone already own it? is it reliable or is it better to go to other brands?

any opinion is welcome, thanks in advance

One of the reasons I can not recommend the wallet is because it is close source.

It also has fingerprint or pin for authentication, but I would have preferred only pin, fingerprint is not advisable, but if several attempts are made, the device will wipe itself. But fingerprint reduces its security in my opinion.

It makes use of bluetooth and OTG. Bluetooth is not advisable on hardware wallet, I would have preferred QR code means of making transaction. OTG are on mobile phones, to make transaction, I won't recommend that either.

No desktop app

I'm opening this topic because I didn't find any news about it on the forum,
Here's a thread from 2018: New Hardware Wallet

I'm looking for a new hardware wallet to give to a friend of mine, as I already know that he doesn't like my wallet that I'm using,
Out of curiosity, what's your current wallet?

Does anyone already own it? is it reliable
Charles-Tim already covered the important bits but with regard to being a reliable HW, it doesn't seem to be that reliable...

Never could get my BTC off of wallet but it will let you add BTC, of course. Even after they sent a replacement, the devices will sync with your wallet for every other purpose except taking crypto out of wallet which is the most important thing. Avoid this product at all costs!!!

      Yancy
There’s some sort flaw in the device software!

      Mikhail
Frequent firmware upgrades that are difficult and frustrating to install. Besides that the phone app always has issues with parsing links. Get ready to try connecting wallet in many different ways just to get transaction going. And it better not be a rush- otherwise it will never happen.

I know this won't even make it onto the review. This is my third 3 D'cent wallet. The first I bought went bad in about 6 month. I called the company and after 2 weeks they replaced it. I've had this second wallet about 6 months again and it's always the same issue. The screen goes out and I can't see to put my code in. I had to get another because of a loan I had out. They sent me this piece of crap. I guess they don't care enough to have customers. I did not contact the company this time because I've had enough.

They have three Products which one you are looking for?

 - D'CENT Biometric Wallet
 - D'CENT Card Wallet
They say that the company is from Korea, I do not know where your country is, but it will cost more shipping fees, and the fact that the wallet is closed means that you will not risk large sums with it.

You can find a review here ---> https://youtu.be/qREah-eMo
Generally speaking, since they work for a long time, if you want to experiment, why not?

I don't know what hardware wallet you use (which your friend rejected), but what exactly does he not like about this device? Did you explain/show in detail how it works?

There are quite a lot of manufacturers of HW wallets in the world. Why did you choose exactly dcentwallet? In the case of storing money, it is best to use proven and reliable devices, and not take risks with novelties. I'm not saying that dcent is bad, but I would rather pay attention to well-known brands.

Above, you have already been given links to topics related to hardware wallets. Show them to your friend and choose the one he likes. It is better to choose from several options than to focus on just one.

ok thanks for detailing all the defects, not knowing the device well it is easy to buy something that is not good! Thanks again

I used the search form, but apparently I missed this thread. I have 2 hw, safepal s1 and bitbox02 I proposed safepal s1 because it would be a gift to give to a friend who is new to Bitcoin

he doesn't like the material with which the Safepal is made, in fact it is of cheap plastic, he didn't specify if there is something he doesn't like on the software side, however being a novice user with bitcoin I would not like to give expensive HW, I'd prefer something cheaper to practice with

I don't own D'cent hardware wallet and I never used it myself, but judging by reviews I watched, and according to specifications posted on their website, my conclusion is that I wouldn't recommend this device to anyone.
It is closed source device that is not offering anything special, and biometrics they have are actually negative thing in my opinion.
That being said, I never heard anyone complaining about D'cent or losing their coins, but there are much better alternatives today.
I see they have some 30% discount now, but there are better options for the same price around $100 to $200.

I would avoid other closed source devices and check available Open Source Hardware wallets:

Many of them are made of plastic. But the way the device looks and feels should be of secondary importance. You aren't going to marry the thing, you don't need it to look good, and feel expensive. But if you want that as well, you are going to have to pay for it much more than with a standard hardware wallet.

Many hardware wallets look weird.
Ledgers look like USB drives. Trezors look like old remote controls for ACs minus the buttons. Foundation Devices look like cordless phones or old models of cell phones. They probably look strange and unattractive to anyone born in the smartphone era. But that doesn't matter as long as they do what they were designed to do, and that's keeping your private keys in a safe place and providing you with a security boost when signing transactions.

But we should not leave the fact that Safepal is a close source wallet that is having close source software. Only what I like about the wallet is the QR code means of making transaction, but it is a wallet that has many reasons not to buy and use it.

thanks to all for the replies, as already said before, it must be a gift, to familiarize my friend with the crypto world, obviously if he don't like an object for X reason, I don't give it away and I look for alternatives, I had seen this d ' cent biometric and I wanted to ask your opinions on the forum to those who are more experienced than me, I will evaluate other options, perhaps a ledger nano S or a keepkey. thanks again everyone

Too bad that you decided to gift your friend a hardware wallet as a present a few weeks after Black Friday. Had you come here a bit earlier, you could have taken advantage of a 30% discount on the good-old Trezor One and got if for around €50. The Ledger Nano S is no longer sold by Ledger on their officially shop. You might still find this device with some resellers though. If that's what you want, you can check this source for more information about their reseller network.

thanks to all for the replies, as already said before, it must be a gift, to familiarize my friend with the crypto world, obviously if he don't like an object for X reason, I don't give it away and I look for alternatives, I had seen this d ' cent biometric and I wanted to ask your opinions on the forum to those who are more experienced than me, I will evaluate other options, perhaps a ledger nano S or a keepkey. thanks again everyone
D'cent biometric is not a common name here and that is perhaps no one gives you a clear review of them because no one uses that hardware wallet. It did not even list on this thread [1] which has 80+ hardware wallets so it is not a well-known hardware wallet.
Ledger nano x seems to be a wise choice and I love to have it too, it has a cool design like a USB stick that has a cover on the top that protects it. But in purchasing those hardware wallets just make sure you are in a legitimate reseller posted above of this comment. Be careful because it will perhaps you will buy a tampered hardware wallet that already compromised the seed.

I am not sure what you were looking at, but the D'CENT Biometric Wallet is there in the OP. The D'CENT Card Wallet is also mentioned.

Anyways, that collection isn't being updated by Ratimov. If you are interested in the topic of hardware wallets, you can bookmark the translated version started by FatFork in our Croatian local board: [VELIKA LISTA] Hardverski novčanici (80+) That one is regularly updated. Even without an automatic translator, you should be able to understand the content in the table.

you are absolutely right, unfortunately the idea of giving the wallet as a gift came after black friday, actually a good trezor one for €50 or so could be a good deal. Since the nano S is no longer in production, I will always evaluate keepkey or the Nano S Plus. I have until January 10 to decide

Take into consideration the shipping time as well. If they get flooded with new orders, it can take a few days before they ship your package. Once they do, it can take another 7-10 days before it arrives at your doorstep. That depends, of course, on where you live, how good your local post office/shipping couriers are, and whether or not you will have to pay taxes and import duties on the device.

I had already kept about 5 days due to the shipments, in fact the birthday would be January 16th, however I will follow your advice and I will keep at least 10 days to avoid any delays, the shipment must be made to Italy, do you think that 10 days are they enough?

Yeah, there should be plenty of time to have the package shipped to Italy. Trezor ships from the Czech Republic and Ledger sends their packages from France. Everything is within the EU, so taxes will be covered in the final price you pay. Shipping the products to a non-EU country would probably save you €10-15, but the countries customs office could require you to pay tax and customs fees. Each country has different laws. But since you are in the EU, you don't need to care about that.

it must be a gift, to familiarize my friend with the crypto world,
I'm not sure if you're fixated on the idea of gifting a HW or not, but if I were you, I'd probably give my friend various cryptocurrency books instead [I noticed you're targeting hardware wallets that already have an exchange feature and if your friend decides to go down that path, it could end badly (e.g. dead altcoins) for him/her]!

Ledger nano x seems to be a wise choice
Looks can be deceiving [make sure to read "all" of the comments]: Ledger Nano X Battery Pandemic

I will always evaluate keepkey

I'm not fixated with buying a hardware wallet, but I simply know it will be a welcome gift, honestly I've never thought about giving away a book on cryptocurrencies and honestly it's a nice idea and I thank you so much, but I don't know if it will be appreciated as a gift! I prefer to play it safe, maybe it will be next year's gift. Thanks for the links, I'll take a look at them
