I wouldn't call that a pessimism, but rather an evolutionary trait that tells us to stay away from things we don't understand if they can cause us some kind of harm.

I do this sometimes. Try to look for other sports and also try if I can win just relying on the favorites.

I disagree with you, just because the casino has an edge over the player doesn't mean that there isn't a strategy. Even a losing strategy is a strategy. Everybody that plays at a casino should know that that the chances of the house to win at higher than the chance of the player to win and make a profit. This is of course only true on average, there will always be winners and lowers at a casino. If everybody would only be losing than nobody would be playing. With this in mind there is no strategy that is going to make a guaranteed profit for the player. Or said differently if we would play any gambling strategy infinite times we would go bankrupt. 5% is too little to risk since you wanted to pursue your gambling career, maybe better at least 10%? that is fair and  valuable enough to charge and boost your momentum .

Basically yeah, you need to make a research and hear important news around the league where you're betting at for you to make a comfortable choice of odds when placing a bet to a certain match.
