If governments could ban Bitcoin, they would have done it by now.

Indian government (maybe other also)  say that " to ban cryptocurrency we need global help"
Good luck with that.

The real question is: why are governments so afraid of Bitcoin (AKA money they don't control and can't print)? Think about it, and you'll find the reason why I like Bitcoin.

India tax crypto. That means crypto is legal in India. But Indian Central Bank is the problem, they hate crypto. If the news is true, it would be the central bank that says something like that, not Indian government. They are failing in their own country about crypto, how will they win in the world.

lets imagine all countries tried it.. here is the result
bitcoin will go brown (not completely dark)

less miners asic farms and more independant hobby miners in basements
(secret mining where authorities cant shut them all down in one swoop)

less legit exchanges for people to openly buy and sell coin.
(more blackmarket decentralised trading for coin)

but to absolutely abolish bitcoin. well.. look how well the international "war on drugs" or the 1920s "alcohol prohibition" went

people got drunk then and get high now.. and authorities cant be in all places at all times to stop it

the more decentralised the network is by having usernodes with full node(archiving) set to distribute the ledger, the more miners scattered in multiple locations, the more services scattered and set to run remotely where there is no physical "office" the less chance authorities have to make bitcoin go brown

I DO NOT TRADE OR ACT AS ESCROW ON THIS FORUM EVER.
Please do your own research & respect what is written here as both opinion & information gleaned from experience. many people replying with insults but no on-topic content substance, automatically are 'facepalmed' and yawned at

Given the size of users around the world, Bitcoin has become a fait accompli that cannot be ignored.
Technically, no central authority can ban bitcoins because the blockchain protocol prevents the entity from being in control of the nodes or blocks. Practically speaking, this can be done by governments if humanity decides to abandon Internet technology or if electric power disappears from the face of the earth.

* They can make businesses no longer accept Bitcoin and will say they've banned it.
** Of course, people can still transact and use it. Is it a ban? Not really, but what's reality when people believe everything that's on TV?

* They can ban mining and say it's done.
** Of course, while most businesses will leave to mine elsewhere, some may use VPN and such and still mine it.

* Stopping all the bitcoin related traffic on the internet... I don't think it can happen without completely shutting off internet

* Getting all countries agree to act together ... I will not live long enough to see that happen. Neither you.

Is this good enough as explanation?

Indian government (maybe other also)  say that " to ban cryptocurrency we need global help" my question is : can bitcoin be banned if all government will agree to ban bitcoin
I think all countries can ban bitcoin, but so far most countries haven't banned bitcoin completely. My country also ban bitcoin, they prohibit its adoption as a means of payment/currency but we are legalized to trade it. Full ban are becoming rare for bitcoin, that's because governments are still thinking about profit from it. Yes of course about taxes they can make a lot of money on crypto taxes instead of banning bitcoin or crypto completely.

I think it's hard to expect all the world's governments to come together to agree on total ban on bitcoin (unless bitcoin and crypto become a real disaster for everyone and every country) which is hard to imagine being real. The government might be able to impose stricter rules on big mining companies, but of course it's difficult to stop mining. There will always be miners as long as they make profit even if the government tightens the rules.

Theoretically it can be banned worldwide. Practically it cannot.

What does it mean?

Nothing has ever been banned worldwide. In some countries you cannot own weapons, in others you can own machine guns. In some countries you can't drink alcohol outside, in others you can, in some countries you have speed limits for cars, but there are countries where there are no limits on certain roads.

The moment you ban something you open up a way for others to profit on making it legal.

How would you expect bitcoin to become banned in countries that recognized it as an asset or a form of payment like the whole EU, El Salvador, some African countries...

Not only Indian central bank that hate Bitcoin and other cryotocurrencies, even though the government itself taxed bitcoin and generating revenue from bitcoin transactions within the countries.
I think the problem between bitcoin/decentralized finance with the government is the central bank which is a financial institutions funded by the government to provide financial services in the country's economy but the central banks around the world have failed in their responsibility to provide an enabling financial environment free of inflation and money printing.

So the central bank sees bitcoin as a threat to their existence which is why they sponsor several attacks on Bitcoin and other sister cryptocurrencies.

What about the energy crisis, does anyone also see this energy crisis as to be a setup for a BTC mining ban?

Government can monitor the grid and sees where hashes come from which they could possibly ban Bitcoin by banning mining its going to be a hard battle for them but if they are going to be brutal with this law, many miners will really stop too and I guess this is what they meant when they ask global help.

Fortunately for BTC, there are countries open to BTC and using BTC to thier advantage in the economic war.

If the government could ban bitcoin, they would have obviously done it years ago. In my opinion, they can’t in totality ban bitcoin. But they could make it illegal therefore dissuading the minds of people and making it harder for people to use bitcoin.

We don’t need global help to ban bitcoin. There are a whole lot of global problems that could do with some global attention and help right now and bitcoin is nowhere near one of them.
Thankfully, there are some countries that are crypto friendly

China tried it in 2017 (that was my first experience) with a ban. I saw how that panned out and how the market shook then. However, there's nothing much that happened after a while as the market reshaped after a slope and picked from then after the Chinese ban that saw many exchanges leave China, including Binance. Today, whenever I hear a country is trying to ban Bitcoin I ask what is there for them to achieve other than noise. For all I care, India can go ahead and flex its muscles. Nothing much will come out of its noise.

Governments can agree to ban bitcoin if they want almost all over the world, but it is a completely different thing to actually trying to make people to stop using bitcoin, obviously such a ban will have an effect on its price and the whole industry, however I do not believe all countries will agree to it, and it is in those countries where miners and exchanges will move in order to survive, so such a huge move will cause a major shock on the market but then we will adapt to it as we have always done.

Bitcoin is a protocol. Banning Bitcoin means eliminating the sources to access that protocol. Theoretically, that's only possible if you do constant surveillance of every computer and make cryptography illegal. Practically speaking, it's extremely hard (if not impossible) to have such totalitarian behavior without some serious reaction, at least in modern democracies.

You can't ban Bitcoin. You can only ban yourself from Bitcoin (in countries where there is dictatorship, and even that's hard to do).

The government can ban Bitcoin any time they want. For example, China has done so before, but it had no effect on the development of this best crypto asset. If we are not wrong in guessing that there are also people who use Bitcoin secretly.
More about the answers you want to get, then you can follow and listen to each member's post in this thread.

I just want to say that there is a high probability that attempts to ban Bitcoin will not succeed as long as the country still uses the internet in every work activity.

No government on Earth has managed to stop illegal peer-to-peer filesharing.  Bitcoin is basically like that, but with money instead of files.

And it's not just the Earth now, anyway.  We have Bitcoin in space.  Name the government in charge of space.   Roll Eyes

CONCLUSION : bitcoin can not be banned by the government people anyways find ways.
Not really or totally 100% unbanned by the government if the whole world's governments come together then a banned could be possible or maybe the government shut down the internet.

Because at the moment some countries are already accepting Bitcoin as a legal tender e.g El Salvador and the Central African Republic which made bitcoin a legal tender.

I think the best the government can do is to regulate Bitcoin services such as the exchanges and other payment gatewys that aid Bitcoin scalabilities.

They can ban bitcoin but will this have any effect due to the fact that there are several countries that have already done that and bitcoin is still standing today.
Regardless of anything, a ban like this is only for one country that they lead, maybe there are even some people who do other things by banning things like this.
On the other hand, it is possible that there will be other things in regulation, even though it is possible for your country to prohibit it now, but it is not impossible that there will be several changes to regulations in the future, especially if more and more countries support it rather than ban it.

Indian government (maybe other also)  say that " to ban cryptocurrency we need global help" my question is : can bitcoin be banned if all government will agree to ban bitcoin

i am something less experience and has bad english so ignore

Banning bitcoin in India and some other governments is an old topic and I saw many people already said about it but in the end, they won't be able to suspend bitcoin itself and all they can do is suspend any bitcoin and cryptocurrency transactions for their own country which cannot damage the bitcoin itself also people still can do p2p transactions and if you ask me they don't do this in India because there are many people active in bitcoin and cryptocurrencies and due to this demand I don't this if their government do that.
