I wonder how much they settled for. It had to be enough for her not to pursue the legal route.
I agree with both sides here. The casino could argue and prove that none of their machines are set to allow even 10 m. wins, not to mention 43 m. You really can prove that there was a mistake and I remember a case where a guy put a boat on an online auction and allowed the instant buy by mistake and some guy came and bought it for really low money like 1k USD for a boat that was worth 100k or whatever. Bottom line, the seller refused to sell and the buyer sued him and lost. The court compared prices of similar boats and said that since the paid amount was so low, not even 10% of the market price, the seller could refuse the deal.

On the other hand, she won and even if the amount wasn't that high they should've settled for less. If I were the manager I'd offer anything to appease her like casino credit, free games, free meals and drinks, discounts, whatever. A simple dinner would be like a slap in the face so I'm not surprised she chose to sue them.

This is really disheartening and all I've been wondering ever after seeing this news is how will the woman be copping with this sily news?
I have just one question and my question is, would they have said their machine was faulty if the woman never made any win ?
The answer to me is no and with this answer I think they really need to do the needful which is paying the woman her complete winnings.
Casinos are really becoming so fond of this issues and I think the earlier they wake up from this fraudulent act the better for them and to answer your question, I will insist my wings be paid.

Well, Katrina Bookman has enough evidence to prove that she indeed won the biggest slot machine jackpot in US history, so I suggest that she must go ahead and file for a complaint and tell the courtroom that she was refused to take what she have won the other day. I bet that any courthouse in her country will take this case as a prime example to send a message for all the fraudulent casinos out there who would try and trick their clients.
According to the article the case was settled out of court so the casino and the client reached some sort of agreement already, it is unlikely it was for the full amount but at least she got paid something, however this should be a lesson, the casino asked her to leave and in my opinion this was done because at the time they were thinking about how avoid paying her, if anyone wins such a high amount they must remain there and begin to record everything so it can be used as evidence in a court of law if the casino decides to not pay.

Katrina Bookman was playing the slots at the Resorts World Casino in Jamaica, Queens when she secured what would have been the largest slot machine jackpot in US history - $42,949,672 (£35.4m). She took a selfie with the machine to mark the moment, and later said her whole body went 'numb' when she saw the life-changing figure. Bookman was told to come back the next day to discuss her winnings, but when she asked an employee what she'd be walking away with, he responded: "You didn't win nothing." The New York State Gaming Commission said Bookman’s machine had malfunctioned, and that she'd actually won just $2.25 (£1.86).The machine had a disclaimer stating 'malfunctions void all pays and plays', and as a result the commission said that they were required by law to give Bookman only what she'd actually won.

Some Casinos are just plain fraudulent. So this woman visited a casino, play slot and won $43million. She took a selfie with the amount displayed on the machine. The casino saw it and told her to return the next day so they could talk about the winnings. Next day she returned. Story changed. She was told the machine had malfunctioned and therefore it was what was responsible for the winnings. They went ahead to offer her a complimentary steak dinner. I got so livid reading this story.

Isn't this just the stupidest reason not to give her her winnings?
Couldn't they have known that their so-called machine was faulty before letting gamblers use it?
How could they do this to her?

Isn't this the same case of the lottery winner where the record of winnings were wiped out?  but then there is this printed ticket that is not in-sync with the one shown on the screen.
Quote
“After explaining the circumstances to Ms. Bookman, we offered to pay her the correct amount that was shown on the printed ticket. Machine malfunctions are rare, and we would like to extend our apologies to Ms. Bookman for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

So I wonder if the ticket is printed right after the woman wins or printed on the next day when they have to talk about his winnings.  I believe it was the moment of winnings reason why she have to go back another day for the discussion because the casino need to verify the issue.

Quote
“After explaining the circumstances to Ms. Bookman, we offered to pay her the correct amount that was shown on the printed ticket. Machine malfunctions are rare, and we would like to extend our apologies to Ms. Bookman for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

The problem is the article seems intentionally missed out some details to sensationalized the news.  Anyway, it took the woman a year before he react on filing a lawsuit about the incident.  But I think that the slots really malfunction because the number shown in screen is different from the amount printed on the claim ticket.  And the woman knows it.

They are liars, it is a very stupid reason, he suposoed to sue them to court which is what should have happened. Even if I will lose the case, I will try and sue them to court and let the judge decide by justice. They are lying which they also supposed to pay for in addition.

They do that to her because the money is large and they do not want to pay her.

But they should not lie to her, she supposed to sue them to court. The more it is getting to court the more the casino will increase the money to pay her. She won that amount and that is just it. Even if it would be settled out of court, she needs a laywer for that.

But what did they give that the case was settled out of court and I'm not sure if they dare pay him 5-10% of $43 million, I can guess if he paid tens of thousands of dollars due to reasonable casino factors telling him to go home and the casino team will think money to be paid to clients. If the lady doesn't agree to the deal the casino team is offering then she can take the case to court and she gets a higher offer than the previous deal because the casino team wants her report withdrawn to clear her reputation to the public.

The thing she should have done is that she didnt leave out the premises of that casino and would be asking out immediate verification and check up whether the casino slot machine is truly
that defective or broken on the time that she played because if she leaves out the casino after that situation then high chances that it would be tweaked out that it is really indeed broken
on which she wont really be having any fight if he would really be trying out to file up some case or something like that.If she had been offered with smaller amount
aside from whole amount winning then you do already now that there's somethings fishy on this situation.

The slot machine has a disclaimer that voids all wins if it malfunctions. But how would the firm prove that the machine has fault? Would they not hide behind slot machine problems to deny genuine winners thier funds?

I think the woman should seek legal advice and look for various means to recover her win. She is not to blame for the machine malfunctioning. If she has lost a huge bet due to the machine's problems, would they have recognized that the machine caused her loss? They would have concealed it and go on with thier operations.
I totally agree with what you just said above. But my issue here is, why will the casino allow gamblers use a malfunction slot machine in the first place? Because who knows how many persons might have used that malfunctioned slot machine before her, lost and nobody said a word, or who knows if since the existence of that casino they have been using malfunction slot machines to rob people of their hard earn money? Because that a very important question that casino needs to answer. Because if the slot machine was malfunction, then that means that's how all others was malfunction too, and everyone who played and lost their funds that day/week needs to be refunded back their money. Else, that casino should be closed down for scamming people.
I really know how painful and heart breaking it can be to win a life changing sum of money, only to go home come back the next day and been told a different story altogether. That's enough to make anybody go crazy, because I'm sure that night must have been her longest night ever thinking what and what she was going to buy and how she was going to spend her money, which ended up been void

If you don't know your right you will be deprived of it, with that winning ticket in her hands she can claim back her money and win against the casino no matter how fraudulent they could have been as long as they have their gambling office location, the law will definitely work against them and their illegal act, only if the woman isn't going to feel inferior from fighting back for her right, sometimes we may be tested to see what our reactions will be on a particular event, here she's expected to display the highest level of disagreement with them and include threat it applicable to instill the fear back to them than accepting defeit like that, they may go behind and claim the winn after which they might have served her the steak.

I really can't fathom what the feeling of that lady when she was told that the machine malfunctioned, hence she will not get any of that juicy millions. Perhaps the best thing is to file complaint against the Jamaican gambling regulatory board for this mishap.

Yeah, in any case, maybe she learn her lessons and probably playing on some other casinos now because of her bad experience with Resorts World.

I guess it is in the ToS that if the machine malfunctioned, the winning is voided, but still that is huge money to won and it could really be a life changer.
Being dismayed on the extremest manner which even myself cant really that fathom on such condition if i do know that i had won that jackpot and its been claimed that the machine malfunction?

You would really be just thinking yourself on cherishing those winnings only just in the dreams and that would really be giving out that suck feeling on why the hell it did happen.

She could really need up some help from some lawyer in regarding the case, it is really that not that convincing on what they are trying out to claim.

Does it mean she is to blame for this? In reality the house is responsible for the user experience and what the players see on their screens. If the machine tells the gambler they've won, it triggers an emotional reaction. It can be euphoria followed by a denial and anger when the casino doesn't pay. IMO they owe her something for the horrible experience she had in the casino. At the very least a return of the money she had gambled away. I'd probably agree to take the dinner for a group of my friends at the place of my choice and a return of the money I lost playing the machine that day, but I'm not someone who likes to visit courts.

It seems that the casino cheated by turning the facts that happened to the woman upside down so that the casino did not pay her the winnings.
And if the machine is broken, the casino should write a message that it is broken so no one will use it.
But instead of writing down the message, the casino just let it go and finally, someone won a lot of money but the casino refused to pay them.
However, it seems that the casino was deliberately cheating, so the woman could not get her winnings.
But we must remember that the casino owns the place of business and we do nothing to the casino.
It’s only the casino knows the truth behind all these lies. And if they are not lying, at least they could have inform the woman in the first place that the slot machine is not working completely so there might be some errors after you play. But the casino didn’t do that. That’s why this casino can be considered cheating so they can avoid paying the woman. They should have removed the machine since it’s malfunctioning in the first place.

If there was a malfunction on the digital display of a slot machine that took a 10 USD payout and turned it into 10e12, would anyone argue the casino is liable for trillions to be paid out to the player because of a mere digital glitch? Malfunctions happen on slot machines -- if it's a land based casino on U.S. jurisdiction then it's going to be tightly regulated.

I would understand skepticism if this was a non-reputable platform but slot machines on land based casinos are mathematically supposed to have set RTP. This isn't the first time someone has "won" a large amount from a slot when the slot had actually malfunctioned. The win was not legitimate.

i think the lady could have sued the casino if she wanted because she was only getting compensation for dinner which was purely a fault of the machine they should have gotten some money to entertain herself it was better than a steak actually this problem if left unchecked will give a bad image to other land casinos

This would be an unforgettable experience for her. I can only imagine how she will gather herself to believe and accept the fact that the machine was faulty and she won such a large sum. If she feels bad about it, she must have decided that she can't win big like this, and the machine must have been what helped her win big.

This is analogous to a gambler betting $500 and winning $43 million. I'll be the most surprised, but also overjoyed with my winnings. Whether the casino is lying or not, if the woman believes it is, compensating her with a dinner treat is appropriate in my own opinion. It’s hard to win big amount like this in casinos.

True. Imagine if the situation is opposite, What if they know that the slot machine is malfunctioning and the slot machine is showing a majority losing streak rather than a invalid jackpot trigger. I guess we will never known that the casino is cheating us. This kind of situation can reduce the reputation of the casino but I guess the media is censoring the physical casino name unlike when a online casino made a mistake which the casino name is displayed and surely reputation will be affected. I'm wondering if this kind of situation happened on an online casino that the casino refused to pay because of a faulty application.

This is an old news though, this happened way back 2016, they filed a case against the casino after.

An for those who want's t know what machine and who is the provider, it's Sphinx Wild game, a basic 5×5 reel alignment slot manufactured by International Game Technology (IGT).

https://www.gamblingsites.org/blog/the-story-of-how-katrina-bookman-almost-won-a-43-million-slots-jackpot/

And I don't think she won the case and all other cases against the casino, those machines have a disclaimer: all wins are voided when the machine are malfunctioned. You can check that out in every casino slots that you will play, and that is their protection.

I could say that this is really a strong protection but they could really make it use on non fair way or simply they dont really like to pay up the winners and would really be just making some reason that they didnt really win at all.Im not shocked for Casino on always winning up these kind of cases if ever this isnt the first one and there's still lots. They could always have that kind of reasoning but to think up sensibly and literally these machines are really indeed prone to breakdown and malfunctions which could possibly happen midway where someone do able still to play and suddenly making up some huge win or hit up the jackpot.
This is indeed a case which is really hard to prove out.

The good thing she made is having a picture of his winnings this really makes a huge thing as a proof because if she want to file a case there's a chance that she could win the case against the gambling casino and also of course there's a chance they lose a lot because this huge amount of winning and to make them safe for paying the most ideal is to make a counter statement that the system has an error still better to push that winning if I were there.

i think the lady could have sued the casino if she wanted because she was only getting compensation for dinner which was purely a fault of the machine they should have gotten some money to entertain herself it was better than a steak actually this problem if left unchecked will give a bad image to other land casinos
It's possible that there's a follow news regarding this case and the lady is likely to use her rights to sue the casino that refused to pay her.

There have been cases like that before that when a casino refused to pay their winnings, they've just faced each other in the court. But not all of these stories are successful.

A dinner that should costed her $43M is an insult to that woman.

The woman's lawyer if ever this goes in the court is likely to win because they shouldn't allow a machine to be on the field if it's malfunctioning and it's their technical responsibility to check before they operate.
