The DA’s office said the victim asked Argueta to claim the prize on his behalf to remain anonymous, promising $50,000 of the prize.

Argueta, who lived in Virginia at the time, agreed to claim the prize on the victim’s behalf and drove to New York to receive the winnings.

At the time, though, the New York State Gaming Commission was not accepting winning tickets in person, so Argueta mailed the ticket to the commission on Nov. 13, 202, instead.

Within weeks, Argueta reportedly went to deliver the NYS Lottery paperwork to her cousin, which said the price winnings totaled $20,000. Along with the paperwork, she handed her cousin an envelope with $13,436 in cash, and said the rest was held for taxes.

The victim found a press release from the NYS Lottery website saying Argueta claimed the $1 million prize and received a lump-sum payout of $537,440 after taxes, the DA’s office said.

The DA added that the victim called Argueta, who said she did not have any more money and if continued to call her, she would take legal action. In May 2022, Argueta forfeited $317,857.13 in winnings from her bank account, which were returned to the victim.

The valuable lesson that can be learned from the story above is that if you want to remain anonymous for your lottery winnings, do it yourself, and don't entrust money-related matters to other people (even if that person is someone close to you)

if i were am victim, i will not reconcile with that cheating cousin, unless she returns all my winnings that she has used, how about you?

There is a saying where I live, personal and emergency matters you don't leave them to anyone else and attend them yourself no matter who the other person is.I believe this saying to has origins because of such happenings where even brothers cheated each other when in stake were such huge amounts of money or winning ticket of such huge lottery prize.

In order for this to not happen we should attend such things ourselves and not delegate them to anyone otherwise this that happened here would be a common scenario. For the cousin though I would not reconcile for the rest of my life if he/she did that to me.

There will be no reconciliation from me if that were done to me. I don't get why people need to hand financial matters over to other people that clearly aren't professionals. No matter how closely related you guys might be, if something involves money, that blood connection is at risk of being severed due to greed and lust for money. Luckily, the winner still got more than half of the winnings, because if not then that will be a long court battle or worse, violence might ensue.

This would have been avoided if the winner traveled to collect his/her winnings and just kept a low profile.

Money really can change a whole lot of behavior of someone and it can be a cause of betrayal. Blood is nothing when it comes to money. You just can't trust someone with a huge amount of money for everyone has a plan when they receive something that big. And for the victim, for trying to remain anonymous, it bit her on the butt.  Her family would be thinking about why she wants to remain anon. So why?

I will consider reconciliation after a certain percentage is returned, I'm sure the money had been spent already.

the story experienced by the woman in the news reminded me of the fraud that my family received and the fraudster was my father's younger brother, my father entrusted my uncle to sell his car but after more than half a year, there was no clarity about the money for selling the car As a result, my father reported his brother to the police. but unfortunately, my uncle said that he had used the money to go to a nightclub with the women, at that time my father was furious and imprisoned my uncle. from there I learned not to fully trust other people, especially gambling-winning fund.

In this case i wouldn't blame the cheater so much as the victim because it sounds not pretty well for going to that extent just because of privacy in other to get surprised things working not as expected, i believe there are many ways he cab engage with the gambling company to protect his privacy without using someone else's in his person to claim such a huge amount, it must be recalled that we humans cannot even completely trust ourselves in terms of dealing with money not to talk of handling someone's huge amount of money and claiming responsibility.

If you want to remain anonymous, don't gamble at land-based casinos but opt for online crypto casinos so you don't have to bother withdrawing your winnings. Even if you are asked to do KYC, only the casino will know who you are and the people around you won't.

And if I am a victim, even though he has returned all winnings, I will not communicate with him because he has been dishonest in helping me. I'd rather do it myself than ask for help from other people who might cheat me later.

Money is the root of all evil, some persons find it difficult to control their minds when it comes to other people's money. Money has brought problems in close relationship between people. It is good we don't entrust   monetary issues to people, no matter how close we are to them to avoid disappointment from them due to the spirit of greed in them.

If I were the winner, I will definitely not having anything to do with my cousin anymore, since she is not to be trusted and can go at any length to fraud you can if she is opportune. This is a lesson for people that don't like to disclose their identities to claim their winnings. Always gamble in a casino that has no KYC .

The valuable lesson that can be learned from the story above is that if you want to remain anonymous for your lottery winnings, do it yourself, and don't entrust money-related matters to other people (even if that person is someone close to you)
The truth about this valuable lesson of life is that everyone gets to have an experience that teaches them this same lesson that money matters are always very delicate matters that can ruin relationships, even the relationships that seem unbreakable because of the long time you have known the person, hence when it comes to issues regarding money you should always be careful who to trust, or best entrusted to oneself. You are the only one you can fully trust.

If not for a woman, money is the next motive of criminals either kin or not. It's enough to commit crimes and even murder.
A person doesn't really need to experience being robbed by a cousin which she trusted. A person can just observe what happens in criminal investigations or in movies because it's usually close to the truth. A son will even kill a father to get the wealth of the father.

If I were the victim though I can still reconcile, you don't wanna ruin and burn bridges to everyone connected to your cousins. If anything, it's them who should consider reconciling.

Money could change the behaviour of people even how humble or trusted the person when it comes to money you will be shocked that the person can do those things. A lot also of relatives killing each other just to get those lands from their parents, how much mo this huge amount of money? The victim should get all the money no matter what and teach his/her cousin a lesson on what she has done so that this would be a lesson not just for her cousin but to all.

i wonder why people play lottery when they know they don't like attention and want to remain anonymous, i don't know how lotteries are in other countries but in my country lottery tickets are drawn on tv i.e. people all over parents are watching the ticket draw, on every corner of the city of my country you can find people buying lottery tickets

so I don't understand why someone would buy a lottery ticket and still be naive to think about being anonymous, I say this because in this case that OP posted that person only lost money because he wanted to be anonymous

another point, the tax charged was 50%? the person earns 1 million and only receives 500,000$? this is a big steal

It is indeed not easy to trust anyone when it comes to the money. People will try to snatch your gambling winnings if they know you have won big money via lottery.

There are usually two reasons why people want to remain anonymous in gambling and do not want to disclose how much they won in gambling.

First, they are afraid that people will stole their money. Secondly, there are many people who are close to you and they may start asking for help or loans when they know you have won in lottery.

siblings fighting over inheritance money, ex-husband and wife fighting over custody of children and property. there is a lot of craziness going on because of the greed for money

therefore if you really love the people closest to you, don't let them change because of money, be firm with them and don't hesitate to cut ties with those who are greedy

I also have a cousin who is greedy for money like the women in OP have, I cut ties with him and that's the firm attitude that I adopted

Next time don't use too bright glow colors on opening threads since it hurts to see such kind of posts. You can empasize it by bolding it or using italicized texts.

Well, it's a good thing that she had get what she really have and it's a lesson for these winners that if you won on lotteries, you'd surely not need to be anonymous since we don't know if someone even close to you will backstab you. It should have been worst if Argueta run away with those winnings and never leave a shadow behind.

money will really bring out the true nature of a person, whoever it is. So don't ever entrust anything related to a lot of money to other people.
the case as the OP described is a frequent case. Want to remain anonymous at gambling despite having a lottery win of up to millions of dollars? Some casinos apply their rules to find out who their winners are for security and to avoid some crimes. It doesn't matter when KYC is required for millions of dollars in lotteries to be claimed, the identity of which is known only to the casino is not to the public. If you have been deceived by the person entrusted with the claim, then it is at your own risk.

When it comes to entrusting someone with money it's a very risking decision to make. Even if they're your siblings or cousin or are related to you one way or the other you shouldn't just go around letting them do some stuff that are meant to be personal.
For in the case of Op, when it comes to money the human mind shouldn't be trusted with it (doesn't apply to everyone though.).  The most innocent man can transform into a cold heartless all because of money so when revealing something like this you should be more careful and if possible let it remain private forever.

That means she wasn't a trustful person. She could be close to him, yes, but not trustful anyway. It wouldn't have been an issue if the man had sent a reliable, honest person in his name to receive the prize. In case there wasn't anyone, then he should have gone by himself and give up his anonymity, unless it's more valuable than a half million dollars, what I really don't think so...

The thing is that no man can be easily found to be reliable to that extent when it comes to the issue of dealing with big amount of money like this, this is when the man make another new discovery of himself when he acted that way, i will blame more the winner because in life things like this shouldn't be trusted with a third party because anything can come up as show, third party dealings isn't profitable by any means.

Secondly, there are many people who are close to you and they may start asking for help or loans when they know you have won in lottery.
that's the reality that happens on the ground when your identity as a gambling winner is revealed.

I don't know if the scam plan was planned by Argueta when her cousin, who wished to remain anonymous, told him to claim the lottery winnings. here I see Argueta really destroying the great trust given by her cousin, and it seems Arguetta will no longer get that much trust from the victim.
