It's high time that we get an onion address, don't you think?

This version would not have to be protected by cloudflare, because DDoS does not work on a single hidden site without affecting the entire Tor network, right? That means the trouble with accessing the forum through Tor should go away.

I'm pretty sure this has been asked before, but what has come out of such requests?

What problem? I just login with Tor and it worked just fine. The issue I always notice is when I am using Duckduckgo with VPN (or maybe without VPN too), there is always still delay to verify if the connection is secure or not.

This is just a forum and I do not think having .onion address is necessary.

I remember ChipMixer asking for it: Cloudflare enabled onion services and Bitcointalk, but that's still using Cloudflare.

At least the Captcha bybpass code got rid of the captcha, but Cloudflare is still a middle man that can read anything.

FWIW: I'd like to see bitcointalkxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.onion Smiley (the vanity address might be a bit difficult)

DoS attacks remain on tor and can strike still too (I also don't know how using tor compares to using multiple vpns in series).

This my post is off-topic, but just a question. Is it possible to connect two VPNs at once? I have tried it sometimes ago and it did not work. The other connection will disable the first one set. Or maybe I did not understand what you meant as series VPN connection. Or you meant to use them randomly?

Simultaneously? No, because ultimately you can only make a TCP/UDP request to one address at a time, so you would have to choose between one. Or you could arrange them in series, but that would be pointless in my opinion.

No, I don't think we should get onion address and retire current .org domain, because we probably can't have bot of them in the same time.
If you didn't notice Tor is currently under heavy ddos attacks and I think this can get much worse in future, that could makes bitcointalk forum almost unusable.
Using onion domain for forum could be used only as alternative in cases when main domain is not accessible or down.

If I understand correctly, OP is not suggesting that the clear-net version is replaced by onion but rather a tor mirror is created. If I don't understand correctly then yes I agree with you that newbie access (as well as existing members as well most likely) will be hugely hindered if bitcointalk is made onion-only.

well an alternative domain can't do any harm
clear if it has to have repercussions on the performance of the forum, maybe it's better not
but I don't understand enough of it to judge this thing
but if it costs nothing, it's a good idea to put an extra tor domain

As long as the forum's server is still running, that could work indeed.

Why not?
I said probably, mostly because of login feature, and because Bitcointalk is registered and operated in US, there could be some other issues related with rules and regulations.
I don't know any other forum that works both on clearnet and onion domain, but I could be wrong about this.

I didn't know your browser had detection for Tor ddos attacks...
It's easy to visit status page on Tor website and you will see why I said this:

I don't know any other forum that works both on clearnet and onion domain, but I could be wrong about this.

I know of the Breached.vc and Russian XSS forum, but there could be others out there that I don't know about.

I proposed this before [1] and it was well received by the community but nothing ever came of it. There was no official reply from theymos or any of the moderators. I do not know why this has not been made a priority. Most members here are using Tor and care a lot about their privacy and it would be great step I think. It does not create any problems because if we were worried about spam then theymos would not allow us to bypass the captcha. We already have a evil fee setup to prevent spam from members registering on tor. I think we just need the onion address set up I do not think it costs much to run too.

Some members were suspicious of tor and think it is spied on but even if that is true every one here that connects via clear net is spied on by their isp and for members who are using tor a onion address increases our security and privacy. Tor has been under a sustained attack for a few weeks now but the slow downs are not bad and it is still better privacy then using clear net. I know Tor is not good for everything and that is fine but I think the forum would benefit from using tor I have seen moderators recommend Tor and it feels like a very btc friendly feature because most of us care about privacy more then most people.

I think people are focusing to much on it only helping a few people who use tor but it would not affect the people who do not use tor to access the forum and it would be a feature that would be appreciated by many. I do not know the costs but some speculated it is simple and cheap to implement and requires almost no maintenance. I do not know how DDOS attacks are prevented on .onion addresses which might be something that would need to be solved?

It'd make sense to get an onion version of the forum in some ways but it'd have made this place harder to find for newbies. I can think of a few reasons an onion site could be favoured over the current one but there's a few drawbacks too (like not getting a pretty address, being poorly indexed by search engines - even if we already are).

Onion sites don't need to be indexed on Google - we're already well-known as Bitcointalk.org anyway.

Also I made a bttalk .onion address - interested forum staff can PM me for it.

EDIT: I made 3 "bitcoin" .onion addresses as well!

The .onion site shouldn't replace Bitcointalk.org, it should just be a mirror.

That's also what I was thinking. An .onion mirror of the clearnet site (that you can post on as well). I never suggested getting rid of the clearnet site.

This my post is off-topic, but just a question. Is it possible to connect two VPNs at once? I have tried it sometimes ago and it did not work. The other connection will disable the first one set. Or maybe I did not understand what you meant as series VPN connection. Or you meant to use them randomly?

A long time ago, I worked with two VPNs. The first one was on the host and the second one was on the virtual machine. Or, as an option, use a proxy with proxifier on a virtual machine. In the end, whoer.net gave out the IP address of the virtual machine.

The .onion site shouldn't replace Bitcointalk.org, it should just be a mirror.

Exactly
If it doesn't bother you, why not use it? in the end it's like it's an addition
clearly if it doesn't take anything away and doesn't create problems (I don't understand much about this topic to be able to say something about it)

in the end it's one more thing

Do .onion addresses perform quicker? I know the tor project has been under attack for a while now and I have not had too many problems but in the last couple of hours I have to keep refreshing the identity because the connection is failing. It is mostly when trying to post. I know it helps with privacy and prevents people from eavesdropping on the data you are sending but does it help with DDOS attacks? I think this is 1 of the biggest limitations of the Tor Network that they constantly get attacked and there is nothing they can do except rely on its members to run more exit nodes but because there is no incentive to do that we cannot defend against ddos that well. If onion addresses helped with this I think it should be a priority. If we had 3 onion addresses which mirrored the original site which is protected by cloudflare they would have to attack cloudflare or attack all 3 onion addresses.

.onion/the tor network does not perform quicker than clearnet due to the additional mechanisms in place that make it a more privacy-friendly option. Speed is usually a cost for privacy, at least in terms of internet traffic/browsing.

It seems that the only solution is to just try again later, according to this article.
Quote from: ghacks.net - Tor network experiencing massive ongoing DDoS attacks
Tor users who experience slowdowns and other connectivity issues while connected to the Tor network may want to retry the connection at a later point. While the attacks are ongoing, their impact on the network's performance differs throughout the day.

In the end what was decided? Does anyone know if it was posted or not?
In the end it's something extra, I don't think it gives trouble on a technical level, it's as if a site had more domains. Of course I don't know if I'm talking nonsense.

So far, I don't believe that the forum administration has created an onion site yet.
