I have not actually explained Bitcoin to someone who knows nothing about crypto before, but if I have the opportunity to meet someone who wants to learn and has knowledge on it, I will simply have to break it down by saying that Bitcoin is the only money that you can't see with your eyes; it's something that actually exists but can't be seen; it's something that can give you fortune and sometimes take your entire fortune away; all depends on how you follow it; it's something that has come to stay and changed the way we transact; it's very vital and at the same time very risky.

Has anyone here had troubles explaining bitcoin or crypto to a normal person?

Despite we have individuals differences whereby some people were good at teaching while so e were not, but most importantly is in showing interest for teaching if you're capable of it, being capable in the sense that you already have acquired the required standard for teaching someone about something which begins with knowledge, be a knowledgeable person so that you can have something to give out to others about bitcoin.

If bitcoin is supposed to be the future of finance

It is already and don't think about it, you can refer people to this forum since you're also lucky enough to have discovered here, let them also have interest first and read by making research both here and on the open internet about bitcoin and start learning, heavens help those who helped themselves.

i believe one way for them to explain bitcoin and the value of it is to teach him how to use electrum (or any other light btc noncustodial wallet), send him some satoshis, and teach him how to convert it to your fiat money. in that way, he will understand that btc has corresponding fiat value. there's no easy way to teach btc, but there's easy way how to show them its market value. because some people won't believe that they can easily get fiat out of crypto. also, make sure the person is willing to learn all about btc and crypto, because he will also find a way how to educate himself by readily available resources over the net.

Has anyone here had troubles explaining bitcoin or crypto to a normal person?

Yes, many times. But I define "normal" very loosely in this context.  Wink

If bitcoin is supposed to be the future of finance, then the whole world will need to know at one point or another. Basically bitcoin and crypto education is borderline mandatory in our honest opinion.

What do you all think?

To put it simply, as the use of Bitcoin and cryptocurrency becomes more widespread, it is likely that more people will need to understand these concepts. In a world that is increasingly digitized, digital currencies may become more common and even necessary in some situations. So, it is good to familiarize yourself with these terms. But not everyone needs to know all the technical details. Just like millions of people use card payments and ATMs without knowing how they work, many may use cryptocurrencies without understanding all the details.

Actually there have been several examples and there have been several discussions which are almost the same with conditions like this if I'm not mistaken because there are indeed several threads that I've seen in almost the same condition.
I see a lot of people trying to get other people to know about bitcoin with some teaching, whether it's among work colleagues, in the family, even at school, that's a good thing, but on the other hand, we also have to look at it from an enthusiastic perspective, whether what we tell really has interest and enthusiasm. high or not. On the other hand, for me personally, I don't really want to be bothered with it because until now in my environment, if there are new people who want to learn and discuss, then I'm ready to give suggestions, but if not, I don't want to be bothered by having to introduce it to other people.

Compare or use other digital currencies he/she knows then emphasize the difference. Mention always market price volatility, decentralization and anonymity to somehow get started. Then engage with the downsides of losing an amount. This is important for them to be able fo manage their expecttions than to be carried away of the profit potential then eventually panick whenever there is a price correction which happens a lot given that its market price is volatile in nature.I think explaining would be better if you won't focus on the good side because your purpose is to just explain and not to persuade them.

Not really hard if you'd think about it. In all senses of the word bitcoin is basically just money with extra perks. So whenever an elderly person who's heard of it on the news or saw it on social media asks me about it, or maybe just someone who's not that familiar with bitcoin, I only ever tell them that it's like money, because well you can use it to buy stuff, you can save it, or you can exchange it for other currencies, just so happens that people love to play with it that's why the price is volatile and can go up and down ("playing with it" is a little too simplified and a bit of a stretch but it's an explanation you'd have to tell otherwise your credibility is at stake at this point). At this point, if they've listened intently, they would pretty much grasp the basic concept of bitcoin already and would stop bothering you with questions, unless they wanted to invest in it.

Yes, it always feels like you are explaining rocket science at first but then I always reassure them and let them know that no one started with a default knowledge of bitcoins, that is everyone started a Novice. With the feeling of reassurance they become encouraged to want to learn more about Cryptocurrency. Learning something new can be challenging on you if you try to do it alone, so I will ask if they want a physical tutorship or can do well learning online from resources, if the choose tutorship, I can offer to guide them, but if they prefer online and learning on their own, resources can be recommended for them.

Has anyone here had troubles explaining bitcoin or crypto to a normal person?
Most especially those non-techy people will hardly understand Bitcoin or the entire cryptocurrency.
Sometimes old folk didn't understand the latest technology and IMO, those people who are in the new generation are easily for them to understand Bitcoin and crypto which not that hard to explain.

Quote
If bitcoin is supposed to be the future of finance, then the whole world will need to know at one point or another. Basically bitcoin and crypto education is borderline mandatory in our honest opinion.
This depends on the government of each country because the government really hard to adopt a decentralized and make it a centralized currency.
It could be for the country that Bitcoin already declared legal and tender to their place, it's easy to spread the education of crypto, especially Bitcoin.

If people have an interest in Bitcoin they will need to do their own research even if no one teaching them.

I will link you up mate,

How to teach someone about Bitcoin
5 Resources to teach Average Joe about Bitcoin
Using metaphor to help ordinary folks understand bitcoin

I think some of these threads can help you out in introducing BTC to someone if you got the chance to. Or anyone can take a look at it and maybe learn some from of the threads from above.

It can be hard if you try to get into the technicals of the technology and how it works and how to set up wallets and how cryptographic keys work and mining and stuff.

But just to explain what it is is pretty easy. It's just hard/scarce money like Gold, except way better, which is why it is so valuable. And it is digital so included is a payment platform that works globally with anyone who has the internet, no need for banks - you bank yourself, no red tape or expensive fees to send between countries, just anyone who has access to the internet is an equal user who can use it freely and send or receive from anyone in the world.

It's an extremely valuable currency and a totally open global payment network and its the most secure network in the world.

But yeah if you go beyond that and start talking about how the technology and the network and everything works and trying to explain blockchain that's when it gets confusing. And I guess it gets confusing if they start saying like "well governments make currencies so who makes Bitcoin?" and questions like that because they probably aren't prepared to understand how money works.

I think the best explanation is something like this:
"Bitcoin is a digital currency that allows for fast and secure online transactions without the need for a bank or other intermediary. It operates on a decentralized network called the blockchain, which is a public ledger that records all bitcoin transactions. Think of it as virtual cash that you can use to buy goods and services, with the added benefit of being able to send money to anyone in the world with just an internet connection."
I don't think there is a point in oversimplifying things, people need to learn what blockchain is and they need to learn about bitcoin.
I hope schools will start teaching about it soon.

A comparison would be your best method I think? Then maybe cite some examples of how it's good by giving counter-examples in the other comparison (in this case fiat ) where advantages of Bitcoin (or crypto in general) could be revealed, such as banks locking your own accounts from you or something like that. I don't think there's any need to explain the nitty gritty details of the tech behind it, unless they asked ofc, but then with that they'd need a certain level of understanding what blockchain is so you'd have to start from there.

Actually, we have no problem explaining bitcoin or crypto to other people but the problem is that many of them are not very interested in bitcoin. Many people still think they cannot join bitcoin for many reasons, which makes them close themselves off from receiving information that might benefit them in the future.

But if they are interested in knowing what bitcoins are, we can explain how to use bitcoins properly, how to choose a wallet to store bitcoins, how to buy and sell bitcoins, how to treat bitcoins as an investment and more.

Most people are always wary of new things, fear of being scammed and fear of losing money are common in human psychology. I have failed many times to recommend bitcoin to my friends, and I find it a very difficult task.
In today's society, people with money are always right, I mean, their words have more weight than those who have nothing, so the best way for people to listen to us is to be better than them. You need to prove your finances are good thanks to bitcoin then when you talk about bitcoin, they will listen to you.

For us, we used freebitco.in first and it basically showed us everything we need to know from a beginner's standpoint.
Introducing Bitcoin to a regular person through Freebitco.in is really a bad idea. It was known as the longest Bitcoin faucet, but now they're add gambling in their sites. Not a good way to let a newbie know if Bitcoin is generated through a faucet site, they will get a misconception about faucet, mining and cloud mining. I think that's why many people get scammed due to cloud mining and ponzi scheme, because they think Bitcoin is really easy to earn.

If the regular person can't control themselves, they would fall in gambling and they will become an addict.

You need to start to explain Bitcoin by compare it to fiat and bank, they will learn how Bitcoin solve the centralization problem in this world.

You can explain them from knowledge to practice but you can do it inversely from practice to knowledge.

I'd like to choose the inverse explanation, from practice to knowledge.

I will show them how to make a transaction with Bitcoin. It is to show them the process is very easy. Then I will show them how to create a wallet, get a receiving address, how to back up and recover wallet.

Very last thing, how to secure their wallet file and how to download wallet from official website.

Verify wallet is important but it is advanced and I can explain it to them after they already have experience with Bitcoin.

Usually I just explain the tip on it because most of the people who ask me know that bitcoin has a high price, so their purpose is to earn profit on it. I just explained what the real purpose of bitcoin is before most people knew it as an investment and how I've earned from it. I don't really go deep into it, as I'm sure they won't understand. Then I would also give them links and videos to learn more about bitcoin.

I believe the easiest way to explain bitcoin to someone is first to understand them and use what they are familiar with to explain it to them, for example, if someone is a gamer explaining bitcoin to them is easier as you would simply tell them bitcoin is digital money that you can use to buy goods and services like you need coins to upgrade your game characters gear using coins or points accumulated.

Of course, there is no one definition that fits all, but nothing beats the definition of bitcoin is digital money without its physical form Cheesy

But then again bitcoin is not only money in its form, it can also be a store of value like owning a vintage car today and if kept in its pristine condition.. can be sold for some extra cash a few years later  Wink
