On August 26, 1980, three men dressed as deliverymen arrived at Harvey’s, a casino by Lake Tahoe in Nevada. They rolled with them some huge machine, covered in a cloth labeled “IBM.” They were dropping off a new photocopier to one of the offices in the adjoining hotel, they said. Though the men were secretly criminals infiltrating the place, the box did not contain one member of the gang who sought to slip into the vault. It contained a thousand pounds of dynamite.

A note beside the bomb warned that if anyone tried moving it after the men set it in place, it would explode. If anyone tried opening it, it would explode. If anyone tried drilling into it, it would explode. These claims appeared to be true, concluded the bomb squad when they showed up and X-rayed the device. The thing had a complex network of wires and eight different firing systems. The only way to avoid the bomb exploding, claimed the note, was to deliver $3 million to a drop-off point. If they did that, the hotel would receive instructions on how to safely separate the bomb from its base, so they could truck it out and dispose of it elsewhere.

The FBI went to the drop-off, which is their usual method of catching extortionists. The guy didn’t show. It would later turn out that the bomber (John Birges, a man bitter after having lost $750,000 gambling at Harvey’s) had screwed up the directions. The bomb technicians therefore decided they had to try to defuse the bomb on their own, no matter how hard it seemed. They evacuated the building just in case their efforts failed, and then they remotely fired a charge at the box in hopes of neatly splitting its modules apart. The bomb detonated.

It blasted through five floors of the hotel. Outside, people cheered because no one died and explosions are cool. Harvey’s might have been a little dissatisfied, since the explosion did some $18 million worth of damage to the property, rather more than the ransom would have cost. It also blew through a wall of the attached casino, but as investigators crawled over this wreckage, Harvey’s kept the remainder of the casino open. They had to make that $18 million back somehow.

The FBI caught Birges thanks to a tip from his son’s girlfriend. He received a life sentence, and the two other guys who’d wheeled the bomb in — who, it turned out, really were deliverymen — received sentences, too. You’ll notice that as flawless as the bomb plot might have sounded, it did not in fact end with the perp walking away with a fortune. Still, if you’ve ever talked about wanting to “do a little damage at the casino,” you can’t do much better than John Birges.

This next story does begin with someone gambling. It even begins with a win. Choo Hong Eng, a 58-year-old manager of a vegetarian chain of restaurants, went to play the slots at Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands resort in 2011. The building is a famous and very weird part of the city’s skyline. It has three towers, topped with a skyway that looks like a cruise ship, and the whole thing is also supposed to look like decks of cards, though we admit we don’t see it.

Eng hit the jackpot. She won $416,000. Then, when she went over to management to find out exactly how they hand over a payout that big, they told her that there had been an error. The slot machine was faulty, so her win was invalid. They could give her a smaller cash payout, maybe. Or they could give her a car. She could even sell the car back to them afterward, in exchange for some other smaller cash payout. That last option sounds downright suspicious, and we’d need a team of accountants to explain why the casino offered it.

As promised, this story began with someone gambling, and we suppose that the next step was also a gamble. Eng had a choice between accepting the (still quite valuable) consolation gift or fighting for the full win. If this were some morally instructive tale, you’d be yelling at her to choose the bird in the hand. The universe has a way of punishing anyone who holds out due to greed.

On the other hand, we aren’t huge fans of the “don’t be greedy” maxim. We prefer a different one, which says, “Take from them what they owe you.” And so, Eng lawyered up. The matter reached the Gambling Regulatory Authority, which reviewed a bunch of surveillance footage and concluded that she was indeed owed every penny of the original win. No word on whether they also fined Marina Bay for trying to cheat their way out of the payment, but we’ll take what victories we can get.

After getting her win, it turned out that Eng did subscribe to the “don’t be greedy” idea after all. She pledged to give half the winnings to charity. Then she went and gave away the whole thing, to groups like the Singapore Buddhist Federation and the National Kidney Foundation. The restaurant biz pays well, it seems, so she didn’t need the money. This legal fight was all about the principle (and $440,000 adds up to a lot of principal).



3. Kidnap the Owner’s Daughter


Ocean’s Eleven contains a line referencing a real-life casino crime. Andy Garcia tells Brad Pitt, “If you should be picked up buying a $100,000 sports car in Newport Beach, I'm going to be extremely disappointed.” In 1994, an ex-circus performer named Ray Cuddy was arrested paying cash for a sports car, after successfully nabbing over $1 million from a casino. The crime that got him his money, though, wasn’t quite Ocean levels of cool.

One July night, Cuddy and his accomplices broke into the home of Kevyn Wynn, daughter of Vegas casino mogul Steve Wynn. The plan was to ransom her for $2.5 million. Just in case Steve didn’t buy classic kidnapper threats (e.g., “Pay up, or we start cutting off fingers”), they tried something else to ensure that he followed their rules. They had Kevyn strip to her underpants, taped her eyes shut and took photos of her, so they could threaten to release those publicly if Steve called the police.

Steve Wynn did not call the police — not at first, anyway. He already had his own private security team, led by the former head of the Las Vegas FBI. He also had a vault full of money, so he could put together some cash stacks without any time-consuming trips to the bank. He did negotiate with the kidnappers about just how much money he could assemble on short notice. He talked them down to $1.45 million, dropped the money off at a parking lot that Cuddy specified, then went to another lot to collect a bound Kevyn from her car.

At this point, the Wynns did bring the authorities in. They looked at call records from pay phones near the drop-off point, and they cross-referenced the people who those numbers called against license plates sighted in the area. This drew them to Cuddy, who was also doing a pretty good job drawing attention to himself by bringing cash stacks to an auto dealership to buy a Ferrari in installments. The next time he showed up there, 14 agents awaited him.

So, Cuddy didn’t get to enjoy his haul for that long. He was sentenced to 24 years for extortion, conspiracy, using a weapon in commission of a crime and money laundering. We’d think that forcing someone to strip and photographing them would merit an additional charge, but maybe legislators had neglected to ink that specific offense into law.



2. Hack a Fish Tank


If you’re thinking about pulling off a casino heist, you’re probably hoping to walk out with cash. Cash isn’t the only sort of valuable stuff that the place stocks, however. A big casino will also store a more modern type of currency: customer data.

Data broking is an industry worth hundreds of billions of dollars. While your own personal data may be worth just a modest amount, advertisers are a lot more interested in the identities of casino high rollers. These are people who spend big and have poor impulse control. A list of every single such person in a casino’s records could be worth a fair bit to the right buyer.

A casino should secure its electronics just as tightly as it secures its vault. But one hacker found a strange backdoor. A cybersecurity firm who spoke at a Wall Street Journal conference revealed that they once investigated how a casino got breached, and they discovered that the culprit was the lobby aquarium.

This tank’s temperature was controlled by a smart device that had internet access. It logged on to the same network as the place’s computers but didn’t have its own network safeguards. By hacking the fish tank, someone got into the network and uploaded the customer database via the thermometer.

The hacking community has a name for this specific type of attack: It’s called phishing.

In 2010, Tony Carleo lost just about all he had gambling. Much like John Birges (the bomb guy we talked about earlier), he decided to take it all back and more, by force. On December 14th, he headed into the Bellagio in Las Vegas and pulled out a gun when he reached the high-limit craps table. Then he shoved all the chips on the table in his backpack, dashed out of the building and zoomed away on a motorbike. In the days to come, people would call the masked man the Biker Bandit.

Carleo had gotten away with $1.5 million in chips. He’d be a rich man, if he could convert the chips to cash. About $1 million of the haul was in $25,000 chips, and converting these would be especially tricky. Hardly anyone ever won those chips, so walking up to a Bellagio counter and asking to cash those out would raise eyebrows, even if the casino hadn’t just been robbed. The remaining chips, however, he figured he could successfully exchange for regular U.S. legal tender, so long as he spaced it out.

So, Carleo returned to the very casino he’d robbed. He played poker, cashed out considerably more chips than he’d won and attracted no suspicion in the process. He moved on to craps, to that same high-limit table he’d visited before while armed, and he played for hours. Then casino staff took him aside. Not to arrest him, no. They wanted to comp him a dinner and a suite.

He now had a sort of base of operations so he could conveniently keep going back to the casino floor every day. This is, of course, the reason casinos give winners meals and rooms — to keep them around longer so they can lose whatever they won. In Carleo’s case, he wasn’t actually trying to win when gambling; he was just putting in his hours so he could head to the cashier later and turn in the chips he’d brought to the floor in his pocket. Still, playing for so long, and so recklessly since it didn’t feel like he was using real money, drained his chips away.

What money he did cash out, he spent. He spent it on drugs and on paid companionship (he said he paid one woman for a four-hour hand job, which doesn’t sound like much fun for anyone involved). It’s possible that these dealers and sex workers also accepted payment in chips. By New Year’s, he had run through just about all of the small denomination chips. This still left him with $1 million, if he could figure out how to cash out those big $25,000 chips.

Like all who are truly lost, Carleo turned to the internet. He went to a poker forum and dropped some hints that he had chips he wanted to trade. He met a willing confederate, who claimed to be connected to the mob, and he did manage to exchange a few chips for cash through him. Only after the first few exchanges did he realize the mafia dude was really an undercover cop, which explained why a dozen officers were at the next meetup and Carleo was now in cuffs.

He received a three-year sentence for the robbery — and then an additional six-to-16-year sentence, since this robbery let authorities link him to an earlier robbery of his. This makes Carleo yet another story of someone who got himself some casino winnings but didn’t manage to hold on to them. In fact, he’d never stood a real chance of cashing those $25,000 chips out. The Bellagio discontinued them right after he’d stolen them. He should have just dumped those. Either that or offered the entire lot of them in exchange for a five-hour hand job.

^ Carleo could have just sold the $25k chip online and then ship it. Why he didn't think someone is actually tracking those chips I'm sure I don't know. FBI is even tracking guns or chainsaws used in crimes where serial numbers are altered. It also happened in 2010, and BTC already exists.

It would have been funnier if he sold the chips to someone inside the casino and then get away with it. Still not a happen ending for Carleo.

4th. Sue The Casino. There is a similar situation with Mrs. Choo Hong Eng where a woman won from slot also and the casino just told her the machine is faulty. The casino is just lucky because that woman has nothing to go lawyering against the casino. All these ways can bite you back with great consequences since it's not a victimless crime

Kidnapping the owner's daughter is something that I can immediately think about because when we kidnap the owner's daughter and can take her heart to love us, there is a possibility that we will be the son-in-law of the casino owner hahaha.

But it will be strange because it is impossible. Moreover, his parents will hire a secret agent to look for where is his daughter. And they can also kill us because we have kidnapped the casino owner's daughter.

This is an interesting read. I think it should be titled 5 Ways to Make a Fortune at a land-based casino Casino — Without Gambling. Why because the stories here can only happen in a brick-and-mortar casino. The the fourth Way to make a fortune at a casino which is suing a casino caught my attention the most.

Some time ago I reported on this forum the story of a woman named Katrina Bookman who won $42,949,672 at a casino in Jamaica but won $43million but was offered a steak dinner instead of her winnings. This woman would later Sue the casino however she lost the case because the casino or really hard a law that said faulty machine voids winnings. That is the casino claimed that the machine was faulty for her to have one that huge amount of money. I read the story with so much pain in my heart and hurt knowing that this woman had been cheated. However I am glad that's the woman in the OP's story won the case.

I would like to chip in some ways which I think people can make money from an online casino without gambling.

He pulled out a robbery, wasn't caught, shot, recognized by anyone. They didn't have a drawing of his mug hanging at the doorway.

Then he came back, gambled there and nobody seemed to remember him

He was cashing out chips for days and still nothing, they were blind. Nobody seemed to notice that the guy wasn't buying the chips at the casino but coming with them already in his pocket.

He had a lot of fun, free meals, ladies, and it still wasn't enough, he had to keep trying his luck until it run out.

Those guys who kidnapped the girl were also really stupid. The first rule of every robbery is you stay low after.

The "Sue the Casino" story remembered me another story which was shared on the forum weeks or a month ago about a woman who also had won big on the jackpot of a land based casino, but had the prize denied, due to it being considered a glitch or bug from the machine. In compensation, the casino had offered only a dinner as consolation prize. And even after suing the casino, the woman still had her jackpot denied by the justice system.

At least on this case shared by OP the woman has received her full prize after suing the house. When gamblers face this kind of issue they have to be lucky in double: first to win the prize on the machine, and second to have their lawsuit on the hands of a judge who will grant them the reward after all.

if the casino knew the damage to the blast is $18M. the casino will rather give the $3M money to him.
the casino was still grateful to have reduced the cost to $15M, FBI gave back the $3M that is supposed to be for the bomber.

Personally, I find the case "2. Hack a Fish Tank" to be the most intriguing.

While in today's era of growing digitization and internet of things (IoT) devices, the idea of hacking a fish tank may not appear significant, it was quite a revelation for many when this case was documented several years ago. This case demonstrates how even seemingly harmless devices, such as a fish tank, can be used as an entry point for cyber-attacks, and I consider this case to be the most entertaining and a remarkable demonstration of clever thinking by hackers.

Both ways involve someone doing some illegal act and some with heavily bad consequences which can end up in a pretty tragic way.The only way to make money in the casino as they say is to not play in the casino and as such you don't risk your money so is the same as making money because you are keeping your money.What is being described in these 5 ways is some people who were crazy enough and had a lot of courage to take heavy risks to their life and that of their family,nothing fancy and never recommended to do in my opinion.I don't think some people in the forum are crazy enough to organize a kidnapping but maybe there are some who knows  .

It's quite unfortunate that this is what most casino does, by trying to bypass paying gamblers their respective huge winnings, which is unfair, as I have happened to come across many complaints of people suing casinos simply because of refusal to pay their huge funds, of which the only excuse has always been as a result it's machine error, that is never supposed to be gamblers fault, because for the fact that that same casino allowed gamblers used that machine and lost funds, they should also be willing to pay users when they win too without any complaint.

But moreover, I'm happy this woman could manage get justice for her full payout of $440,000, and went about touching the lives of the less privileged and people in need.

She is rich though and she only won $440,000.  But this woman who won almost $43M from a slot in resorts world was denied of her winnings after the casino claimed the machine malfunctions. I think they find it too much to give the $42M.

Fighting legally I think is the only way that works to make money at the casino without gambling but basically, Mrs. Choo Hong Eng gambles first until she encounters injustice. But it did worked for her than the rest who basically are just robbing from the casino.

You are absolutely right, investing in a casinos bankroll is indeed a goldmine, but this is if the casino does well as a business.
And another big issue here is, finding the right casino to invest in, for this type of investment, it is preferable to find a casino that is just starting up, and since the future is so unpredictable, it is difficult funding a casino that one is sure would do well in the future, I believe this is one of the reasons why investing in casino bankrolls isnt a popular niche in the gambling industry.

How ever, this thread isnt really focused on legitimate ways through which gamblers can make money from casinos without gambling, but rather, it tells some story of some people that have device different ways they could extort money from casino, both legal ways and illegal way.

hacking is indeed a safer one in my opinion if you know how to secure your anonymity in the long run. other stories presented, you are exposing yourself to prison sentence. but of course, in real life, you won't do any of that act. much better to live at peace rather than being hunted by the authorities. so yeah, just look at this post in a funny way not a serious one.

Some rather interesting insights there and good job for putting together an interesting article, although these days I wonder if it was written by an AI bot What's most apparent to me and telling by the old photos in use, is that most of these were done back in the 80's and 90's when casino security was still blind in many ways compared to today. You're probably profiled and captured on at least a dozen different cameras before you even step foot in a casino car park these days and they will have all sorts of motion tracking to analyze your movements. Not to mention smart or serialized playing chips which would quickly shut down the situation in example number one. Definitely cool to see what people used to be able to do

Definitely Carleo's is the most rollercoaster-y (if that's even a word) and funny as hell too. Just these people getting taken over by greed when they're supposed to have it all. He literally had the casino by the neck and would've gotten away with it too if not for his stupidity and greed taking over his mental. Still, he got it coming, no good comes from easy money as they say.

I'd say the most underwhelming has to be Birges. Imagine building a plot like that so thick a telephone book would be embarassed. Only to be cucked from your freedom by your son's girlfriend. Like I know that is damaging (and he probably got it coming for him as well) but to just be snitched out by someone you could've known so well is just something. Although I believe this snitching is in retaliation for idk abuse either on the son or to the girlfriend. Whatever mans, they deserve the time for their crimes.

Honestly, i didnt see one this coming and among the lists this had been the other way around which we cant see on these cases and the rest are those common probable situations that someone could
commit out like kidnapping casino owner daughter or bring some bomb or robbing the place. Speaking about #2 then it is really that the casino had been careless about it but whom had
thought that it would be targeted out or having the exploit for the hacker to access into the network? They had just let it slipped but a very unique way on accessing
out without being caught.

But honestly, I was surprised to see that it's about those crimes that one may take and it's not just in the movies that's happening this. I think the most decent one is the suing portion.

Although the gambler had gambled there but with the situation, she has to sue the casino. If there are dishonest gamblers, there are for sure dishonest casinos too.

Number one is the dumbest for sure, but the best way to make money out of the ones you gave is to sue them, as long as you have something to really sue about, like getting food poisoning, getting a spiked drink, being beaten by security, kicked out for "cheating" and denied win, when they have no proof... The title of the thread really caught my attention because I really wanted to make more money from casinos. But I just realized that the OP was just highlighting some stories where some persons made money through the hook or the crook from casinos. Apart from sueing the owner of the casino others are risky and illegal. But I think OP was just joking because he never encourages anyone to engage in such criminal activities. I have just been reading up on the bomb story in the Harvey's Resort Hotel. What impresses me is how the guy constructed this bomb. He must have paid some professionals. Lol when I read the title of this thread I thought that the words I can read is damn serious and can earn in legitimate ways but smiling while reading those crazy methods.

I think kidnapping the owner's daughter is funniest and interesting but the thing is, if it has lot of chaperone around them that will be a different story. You need a full proof plan to do it. These are totally not for the faint hearted and I don't think this is a good thing to do unless you are on your worst to get that money.

I didn't know what to expect but I certainly did not expect the number 5 and 2. The rest are rather normal-ish in terms of having an idea of doing something to get the money in a bad way, but those two? You may be right, I simply assumed that casinos implemented those security measures as soon as the electronics were available, for example, cameras and phones.
But I assume they did not expect someone to be as daring enough to steal that much from them.

Very interesting article to read, unfortunately most of the stories are illegal and will probably end with us being in jail if we would attempt it. Was a funny read, just not really realistic in today's world. For a Hollywood movie it's a great story, but to do it now in real life I would advice against it. Even if we manage to get our hands on a lot of money like that, we won't be able to enjoy the money. What brings us all the money in the world if we are sitting in jail? I like story number 4 a lot, she won the jackpot but didn't get the money straight away. It always seems so weird that the first reply from the casino is it's was an error an the win is not legit. Targeting the owner reminds me of the "Sleepover bandits" where the robbers visit the house of the owner and then from there they get to deal with how to go into the bank in the morning.

Casino owners however don't become owners if they are not from a crime family. They are bigger than a police district. I have just been reading up on the bomb story in the Harvey's Resort Hotel. What impresses me is how the guy constructed this bomb. He must have paid some professionals. If you read about it, as the author in your excerpt describes, there was no way for the bomb disposal squad to shut it down safely. We all know so many movies where there is at least this one cable you have to cut and then you are fine.

Everyone who saw the series "Bodyguard" on Netflix or "The Hurt Locker" with Jeremy Renner. Every time they defused a bomb I asked myself why those bombs are not just build in a way that they simply can't be defused.

Now I read about this story and this guy made it! But when an FBI professional team can't defuse it, I doubt that John Birges himself could have done it.

The best about the story is that nobody was harmed physically. As a hotel owner it must feel bad. I wonder if an insurance pays for a bomb attack like that?

That's what separates the bomb in the movies and bomb in real life because in the movies, bombs are just made to scare off some people but detonating it is not as complex compared to the real life where there would be so many wires attached on it with almost no hints what wire needed to be cut to turn off the whole thing. Even the experts like the bomb squads doesn't even know how to safely detonate it.
But for the insurance, maybe they haven't got any because some policies are different like for example, the bomb didn't explode on it's own, it's because the feds are so confident that they have everything under control when in-fact they don't know what to do.

This will take a lot of greed, and not a safe advise at all, I’d rather lose money than to lose my whole life in prison. There’s no other way to make profit in casinos without losing, its normal and its part of the gambling activities. If you want to make more profit then you should be more lucky or you can find other way aside from gambling. Doing something that is against the law just to make profit is not good at all.

Those are really ways to make big money at casinos but the title should remove the 'without gambling' part. Technically, those ways are also a gambled since they are not even sure if by doing those, they will really can milk a big money on those casinos.

That is your opinion, and I think that it is only a person with mental instability that would want to go and try to carry out any of the acts in the OP on any casino, I clearly stated that the title is kind of ironic, it was written so to give readers some kind of amusement, a reader who is not criminally minded already knows that he or she is not supposed to try any of this things on any gambling casino, not even on any business whether small or big.

Its not humor purposes or even being practical but rather those are literal things which you could really get money without playing but of course it is something that connects about criminal acts.
You could really get money through this but of course this is just that suicide on where you do know on what would comes next? Getting imprisoned because you are doing something which is really that
