You're right mate, an average person cannot assume the two as thesame thing because gambling is not an investment but rather an event to mark the occasion of having leisure, when you invest in bitcoin, you're not gambling but taking risk to invest for profitability in the future time to come, the two may involve the use of money but not thesame applicable means we make use of the money, everyone doing each of the two must understand clearly what they are in for because one can loose money completely and tge other may loose little or earn more and we must not take one for each other because they are entirely different things.

I believe the reason why your friends continue to argue with you is because you haven't explained to them exactly how bitcoin investments work. If you have, they should know that gambling and bitcoin investments are very different from one another. When you gamble, you can have a lot of money and believe that you'll make money, whereas a bitcoin investor won't. Which is different because I'm confident that if a bitcoin investor received the kind of money that gamblers occasionally lose, he would take care of himself.

Even bitcoin traders, in my opinion, take a higher risk with their money than gamblers do because they frequently lose a lot of money in a single night, whereas a gambler can occasionally only predict one ticket and is finished for the day once the game doesn't go as planned, whereas a trader can lose and still study the chart since the chart is rising and falling, they may believe it will rise and put another money that's how they operate. or better yet, if his friend continue to have arguments over this matter, then better let it go. you can't win to an argument if he doesn't open himself to other aspect of bitcoin investments. just like you said, even if the btc price goes down, still you only lose some. but you will only lose if you sell it but if not, you still have the chance to recover your initial investments or more.

I can't say I agree with really anything either sides here are saying.  First off, bitcoin and gambling are two entirely different things.  Bitcoin was created as digital payment system.  Now it's become an investment, just like all currencies are as they are traded and used as investments, but inherently it's a payment system. Gambling could mean a lot of things, but with gambling you win or lose at thats that.  Your bitcoin value can go up and or down but as long as you hold on to it, you're losing nothing. 

Knowing charts doesn't make you a bitcoin trader, and there's a lot more to the price of bitcoin than just what chat movements say ( or you think they say ).  There's a certain level of fundamental analysis with bitcoin as well as technical. 

So IMO you're both wrong.

I agree analyzing the conversation between @OP and his friends ends up on who is winning and losing which is not the case to differentiate Bitcoin investment and gambling.  A person can lose on investment but it still can't be considered as gambling.

One good comparison is given in this article called Gambling vs. Investing.  One notable explanation in this article is that, when we gamble we own nothing, meaning the moment we spend our money to wager, we hold nothing until the result of the wagering happens.  While in investment, when we spend our money, we automatically got a hold of the asset or if it is on stocks,  we own a share of the underlying company. Since Bitcoin is  volatile, it is obvious to me and everyone else who is familiar with how it operates that it can only lose value or keep losing value; however, someone who has bitcoin in their wallet cannot lose that bitcoin and may hold out hope that it will one day recover. In contrast to gambling, which requires you to make a prediction and bet a lot of money, when you lose you lose everything and have no possibility any hope again, Bitcoin can only lose value, which gives you hope but not gambling.

There is a big difference between gambling and investing. If a bitcoin investment loses value, it will recover once a time. But that is not possible in gambling. Here gambling should be done with the mindset that the probability of loss is high on every bet. Although there is risk in these two issues, but they are different perspectives. Investing is different to gambling.

Just think about investors and gamblers. You will see that people who invest are looking to the long term, while gamblers look at the short term.

You will also see that many investors end up wealthier than before investing, whereas most gamblers end up with less money than when they started gambling.

That is partially why gambling is so restricted in many countries, but investing is encouraged by governments (retirement saving accounts for example, etc).

Bitcoin allows you to invest by simply saving in money. This is different to fiat, because fiat value is eroded by inflation so you have to exchange fiat for something else, like Bitcoin, or real estate, etc, so that the value doesn't go down over time.

If you think the volatility make Bitcoin isn't safe, then it will never been safe from the beginning.

If you are dropping money on random shitcoins, then I agree with your friends.  It is slow motion gambling with the house or big winner being the issuer of the token/coin.  Investing into Bitcoin is a little bit different, as it is already being accepted as a new asset class.  One could make the same argument for Ethereum.  There is little demand outside of those markets to justify additional valuations though, so I can see how they can be considered gambling.

Investing definitely isn't gambling though on the whole.  Many companies are good brands with consistent earnings that aren't a gamble at all, but an income source.

Nothing that we spend on hoping to make money from isn't safe. Some are just relatively lower on risk, but the risk is there. This comparison is, IMO, not really useful since these are two different facets. You can gamble less money on gambling platforms, but if you invested more and lost a lot more in there, I don't think you can even consider it a win. We choose where to spend our money, but saying that one is better than the other just because you're winning on it doesn't mean that everyone should do it too.

Gambling is very addictive, gambling less can only help you if you are not putting it to heart which I not possible but I must say that once you are into gambling it will be almost impossible for you not gamble more unless you are just a beginner that just want to give it a benefit of doubt but once you win a bet generally you will gradually see yourself graduating into a full gambler.

You can be a full time gambler yet you're not suffering from addiction, the full time gambling only means you're gambling as a job because that's what gives you income to take care of your personal needs as such it has to be done frequently like a normal job.

While been in this situation, you still have control over yourself as you won't go beyond your budget or steal to gamble but an addict can do all that while still not making any profits from the bets they placed, they just want to gamble because of how it makes them feel.

Addiction is a deadly sickness and it can happen in all areas of work, you can get addicted to music, movies etc you can gambling frequently but just make sure you're not excessing your budgie not gambling as a form of revenge as all those only leads you to losses.
