In the past, yes some of the bad boy attributes you mentioned are known with gamblers and that is why it was labelled as bad habit to gambler. Many families don't like their children to associate with other children who gamble but these days we know some people only gamble and not involved in other illicit attributes.

The answer is not far from what you know but based on different jurisdiction or country. I think for some countries that the youth find it difficult to get employment, the reason is basically because of no jobs but although you still find those that have job who still gamble and if you ask them why, the response is that their salary is not enough and so it is taken as another means to shoot at income.

Currently now, if gambling for gamblers is for fun is debatable because higher percentage of gamblers do that purposefully to ncrease the money they have.

Best thing that would explain this, is money. Only few people are really enjoying gambling and mostly are into profit as we all know. Despite of one's losses, he would continue if he's too hooked up with the idea that he's close to winning bigtime. Indeed it has psychologically related. Think of an individual who have lost $200 and experienced winning $50. It would more likely sink into him that he's close to getting back with his losses so he would continue playing, and eventually be losing a bigger amount. He'd be aware of it but will still continue simply because the idea of winning motivates him to do so. For sure we are all aware of how risk works in this activity but we still engage into it.

It wasn't really like gambling is a bad thing, It's perfectly fine to gamble you just need to be disciplined and know your limitation on it, know how much you can lose, and when to stop gambling. I didn't gamble anymore but sometimes I bet on NBA games that will win my friends and family just to have the thrill and fun, It wasn't a big amount so it's okay to lose and if I win then I guess I make money anyway.

There is no mystery behind gambling, people are attracted to anything with rewards because in their eyes the reward is the return to accumulating more holdings. Broadly speaking, gambling encourages a person or people who are highly self-motivated to try their luck. But believe it or not, the fact is that we all experience this and admit that gambling is difficult to avoid, both young and old, now almost 90% is contaminated with gambling. I speak based on what I witness in my immediate environment, and on social media, where most of them say so. They saw that some people managed to win a lot of money from gambling, making them gamble non-stop. People keep gambling to get the biggest win, even if it's only once. And if they lose, it's okay for them because they will return another day.
