@OP don't get hurt if your friend keep his investment secret from you.  I believe even his family does not know about his Bitcoin investment due to your friend keeping the data about his investment secure.  It is normal for a cautious person to keep important information especially when it has to do with financing and investment, hidden or secret.  So instead of whining about your friends action, why not understand him?
As said, it is good that you try to understand him. People have got different thoughts when it comes to privacy. Not everyone expose themselves to the close ones. Feel happy that your friend is part of bitcoin, because you've tried to make him understand about it. One thing, at any cost OP shouldn't ask him why he hide it. Because, the same could create uneasy feel between the two. This incident can sometimes affect the long friendship.

Maybe he just wanted to surprise you, and it also depends on what level of friends you guys have sometimes when it involves money, people won't tell you about it because they have multiple valid reasons to do so, and one example is they cannot reveal it to you because they fear that you might going to ask them to borrow it. If I were a sincere friend, I would leave it as it is because that was what he wanted, he didn't want anyone to know, or maybe the dude just wanted to hold his bitcoins for the long term, and at the same time, he is hiding it to others as well.

Sounds funny that someday when your friend knows your private key and steals all your Bitcoin or crypto assets because you expect that your friend has zero knowledge about Bitcoin.  The purpose for sure could be privacy and your friend wasn't telling you that he has more knowledgeable than you.  That can indeed be puzzling knowing the fact which reveal the truth.

It's possible that he wanted to keep his financial activities private and IMO I would do the same because Bitcoin investments can be personal, and some individuals prefer not to share their financial endeavors with others and he may have had concerns about potential conflicts or differences in investment strategies.  So don't be too much talkative that could potentially be leading you to a scam when you accidentally revealed your private key.

@OP don't get hurt if your friend keep his investment secret from you.  I believe even his family does not know about his Bitcoin investment due to your friend keeping the data about his investment secure.

OP said he found out that his friend was involved in bitcoin because his friend's relative revealed this information to OP so that in itself suggests that his friend was not concerned about privacy as I've seen some comments that were posted here in this thread, just look that OP's friend's relative talking to OP means that it was no secret to anyone that OP's friend had bitcoin so we can assume that OP's friend just didn't want OP to know that he has bitcoin , the problem seems to me to be something personal

and this can be for several reasons, but in most of these types of cases the reasons are: envy and competition. probably when OP's friend heard that OP had more bitcoins than him, he must have felt humiliated and inferior to OP and for that reason OP's friend chose not to tell OP that he also had bitcoin. I would bet more on my theory, that's because many people who are friends tend to compete with each other, and most of the time it becomes an unhealthy competition and people ignore this great evil, OP should be very careful with this friend of his from now on front

there are people who always tell and tell their friends that they invest in bitcoin, there are also even though a friend but he doesn't want to tell his friends that he invests in btc.

I don't think your friend meant anything bad to you, I think he did it because, for security and privacy. and what he did in my opinion is a natural thing.
especially now that bitcoin has become very popular, so we really have to be vigilant about protecting our assets.

Security and privacy 🔏

I think that sums it up. The fewer people who know you have bitcoin, the better, even if it's someone seemingly trustworthy. You don't know if it might slip out that you have bitcoin by talking to a third party or something, and in general personal finance issues are best kept to ourselves.

Although I would say that some people talk about owning bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies like those who talk about owning shares but are concerned about their privacy and security, they are very careful about it.

Why would someone try to hide their Bitcoin involvement from their friends that tried to teach them all this while?

I feel somehow about my friend because I just found out that he has been into Bitcoin for a long time, probably before me, what's surprising to me is whenever I tried to enlighten him about Bitcoin he always Shawn me down and say he has no interest..

Today I get to know from a relative of his, who thought that we are into Bitcoin investment together, a coincidence that brings up some suspicious thought, now I am left with thoughts of why he was hiding this all along from me?

At first I though maybe he was scared bringing me along, but it doesn't make any sense because I thought I knew better than him and I needed to teach him.

What do you think is probably ongoing here?

We really don't know what is the reason behind keeping it secret while you are introducing it to him. But this is only what I've assumed, he tends to keep it silent as he doesn't want someone to make his life as an example when you were telling others again. He pretends to do nothing but when you left, he got busy digging more about Bitcoin and investing without relying on someone.
Now, as you know, you can ask him personally but for sure, he will still tend to deny it and say nothing about Bitcoin but negative.

I think it's the right thing to do actually.

Some people, myself included, don't like talking about Bitcoin with other people and especially telling them how much of it I have. So I think you should just respect his decision because for some people Bitcoin is something intimate, I guess.

It's like with anything, you can force discussion of something on a person. And I also tink some people are embarrassed that they are into bitcoin because of the "influencers" and some public crypto persons who are just cringy.

Don't think negatively about the attitude of your friends who seem to close themselves about their involvement in Cryptocurrency to you, maybe he thinks it's not time to open up to you (even though you are more reliable than him) because he himself thinks he doesn't fully understand Cryptocurrency. In this situation your friend "maybe" more comfortable doing his own activities, he is more concerned about privacy so he can focus more on trading in Cryptocurrency without any interference from other parties.
Friendship is like the relationship between parents and their children, there are limits that are impossible to tell until a certain time, rest assured he will tell you everything even though in the end he has to learn a lot from you.

Your pal' behavior seems peculiar, though not surprising. Bitcoin, like any financial venture, is deeply personal. Even on a decentralized stage, privacy remains key for many. He might have had numerous reasons to keep his Bitcoin endeavors under wraps.

He couldve wished to steer clear of any potential fiscal debates or fallout from you knowing his involvement. He might have preferred you not to witness his Bitcoin journey' hits and misses. Keep in mind, finances stir different reactions in people, potentially altering friendship dynamics.

Still, I urge not to speculate. Talk to your friend, express your concerns. After all, Bitcoin is mere tech. Dont let it strain your friendship.

If he were a longtime investor, he would have been very careful because when he started investing in Bitcoin, not many people were doing it and it might be considered strange. So he better hide it from everyone.

So he can hide his Bitcoins, he must be calm and safe and he can also use them without anyone knowing. And he also must have a reason why he did it and did not tell the people around him that he owns Bitcoin and has known Bitcoin for a long time.

Better you don't think about it and maybe you can learn much from him. You can get more experience from him and useful knowledge for you.

Why would someone try to hide their Bitcoin involvement from their friends that tried to teach them all this while?

Security and privacy 🔏

The person is just trying to play it safe; you both might have been friends for a long time and share things among each other, but that does not mean the person trusts you enough to tell you about their finances or holdings.

Don't take it personal; to some point, there is actually nothing too bad about keeping such a thing from you. Friendship is not all about knowing each other's secrets.
If Bitcoin is the only thing that could change the life of people around you, you will still chose to be secret about it? Must he tell me about his stash? Must he tell me about how much he invested? It's not about the investment, it's about taking chances with Bitcoin is all.

So why are you all accepting Bitcoin as means of payment? Why are you all displaying "Bitcoin is accepted here"? Why are you promoting Bitcoin? Why don't you all keep it as secret since you don't want anyone to know that you are involved with Bitcoin.

Why the secret wasn't kept to himself? Why did his family and relative know about his Bitcoin investment? I think your replies are not right but I will make this my last comment in the thread, it's fine.

Probably, the desire to hide knowledge of bitcoin from your friend is due to precaution and discretion. It's no secret that excessive talkativeness regarding bitcoin often led to undesirable consequences, such as theft and robbery of cryptocurrencies from the owners. Your story looks like your friend just doesn't trust you and that's why he hid his bitcoin infatuation.

If you want to clarify everything, it is better to ask him about it personally. Try talking to him and find out what made your friend keep quiet about bitcoin.

Bitcoin isn't the only thing to change someone live, it's useless if you have very good understanding about Bitcoin and you don't have any money to buy Bitcoin. Moreover, you as a friend has no obligation to change your friends life.

Not all people want to adopt Bitcoin as a currency, not all people run a business and accept Bitcoin payment, I never promote Bitcoin outside from this forum.

The reason why he only share his Bitcoin investment with his family and relative is, family is more important than friends.

You must be have a secret thing right? does everything you've shared with your mom, you shared with your friend too?

I would have said that you have a friend that's scared of the possible outcome in the future, he doesn't want to bring you along to see you hurt in the process, but that's not what I am seeing here.

I have read many replies on this thread and many are wrong or they are not completely focus on what OP wrote, if truly his friend is protecting himself why would he take his families along?

Don't tell me that you guys missed where OP said that his relative was how he knew that his friend was into Bitcoin all along and he pretended like he is not, the relative of OPs friend must be shocked if he finds out that there is no Bitcoin relations ongoing between OP and his friend.

This is a case of competition or envy, maybe OP had a good life earlier on and the friend was jealous and getting to know Bitcoin looks like a way to beat his friend's success, I might sound crazy but this always happens between two friends, both males and females around the world.

If all the friend wanted was privacy, his relative won't know about Bitcoin, sorry to say OP, your friend doesn't want to carry you along, maybe you are already in a better place than he is.

The truth about Bitcoin investment is, the richer you are the better, if you have enough money for investment you will enjoy Bitcoin investment.

So why are you all accepting Bitcoin as means of payment? Why are you all displaying "Bitcoin is accepted here"? Why are you promoting Bitcoin? Why don't you all keep it as secret since you don't want anyone to know that you are involved with Bitcoin.

We all have a different way of thinking, and as such, everyone is not expected to be doing the same things at the same time.
We started accepting Bitcoin in our business as a means of payment because we wanted to; it's our choice, not anyone else's. Because I want people to pay me with Bitcoin in my business, it's not the same thing as wanting people to know I'm holding Bitcoin. Beside the fact that your friend doesn't own any businesses accepting Bitcoin, he has his own reasons for not wanting to tell you or even discuss it with you.

Quote
Why the secret wasn't kept to himself? Why did his family and relative know about his Bitcoin investment?
Is it not even clearer here?
He tells his family about it, but he hides it from you. The truth is simple: he did not trust you enough for you to know about his involvement in Bitcoin. No hard feelings.

Quote
I think your replies are not right but I will make this my last comment in the thread, it's fine.

You are free not to. You created a thread to know the reason why your friend is hiding his Bitcoin involvement from you. You are getting responses, and it seems it's the opposite of what you were expecting. We all have different opinions here, and that defines us. Don't take it personal; even if you don't want to reply, you can still come back and read through the thread.
Maybe your friend is even among the members who are commenting here.  Cheesy

Maybe your friend didn’t wanted you to find out about his investment. I mean a person has his own will to do whatever he can, and many times we have met with persons who are very protective towards their money and always wants to hide their investment plans. Moreover another situation may have happened here. Is Bitcoins legal in your country? If not, then your friend might for this reason, hiding his investment as no one else could find about this investment.

You know that often not trusting someone is the best way to maintain a relationship with them or keep us away from various problems which will harm us. Maybe your friend thinks that it would be better for the two of you not to get involved in matters related to investing and finance, so that the two of you can keep going without harming anyone. You might think this is quite painful, but it's good if you two can go on like this without getting connected to investment stuff and that way you can maintain a friendship with him longer.

It may be for his own security. Because Bitcoin is a currency where one can hold large sums of money at once in a completely anonymous manner, many people do not want to publicize their financial status and hold large sums of money in secret. because of this, many people want to hide their Bitcoin usage or holdings. the best formula is for those who happily use Bitcoin to let everyone know about it, but those who use Bitcoin to hold large amounts of money try to keep themselves a secret.

Your friend is much wiser than you, OP. Why do you think that you are more knowledgeable about Bitcoin than your friend? Because you are trying to teach everyone? Some people have strange behavior; they impose their interests, but they could be more modest and adhere to the idea that Satoshi himself meant.
Among other things, this mysteriousness of your friend only proves the expression that money loves silence, and in business, there can be no friends but only partners. But you, apparently, are not even his partner.
