Several times over the years I have heard about corruption in African teams (not only African teams, but since we are talking about Cameroon I will focus here) and this would be a big reason why African soccer has not yet achieved more expressive results in world cups. I don't have the sources now because I don't even remember where I read it anymore, but it is the same story you are commenting on.

It is difficult to prove something, and it is also difficult to measure how much it affects the fact that players prefer to play for European teams, as is the case of Mbapeé and France, and many other Africans who have nationalized themselves to play for European countries. Corruption is everywhere and football is not exempted from this activity. I also heard some that you will have to bend to their will by doing same sex with some of the officials, this could be made up and is also possible because you can only defend what you know. Hence, more of the reasons why you see good player hanging around area looking for another alternative and will be in their local league and you wonder what's happening, why are they not signing this good players.

Mbape was only a fraction because he is success, there are more of these victims but they cannot open up while some are scared. I'm very sure that if it were after winning the World Cup in 2018 and ask if they will allow him play with Cameroon team, they will receive him with an open arms but France loved him and take him in with open arms and today instead of them be celebrating the World Cup winner, they are running after his vehicle still looking for the same money to dash them.

This is not rare at all and while it did not happen to me this happened to a friend of mine, he was really good at soccer back in our younger days and I really thought he had what it was needed to become a pro at some point, however when I asked him if he had any chance to go pro he told me he was asked for a huge sum of money in order to get the chance he needed, and since he did not had it then he never got a chance.

In the football sports industry there is a very large circulation of money so that it is used by some people to make wealth easily but this actually damages the development of football in the country itself.

I think coming to Cameroon is to show support for the father's country to help do some charity work there, I don't think he regretted not playing for Cameroon but only explained why he didn't. A corrupt system doesn't go after offenders because they are all birds of same feathers. Even if they do out of pressure, the offender will bribe their way out. Corruption shows the rot going on in a system.

It is not surprising that usually officials in football "request" fees from the families of children before they can be educated at the academy. That's why usually the kids at the football academy are rich kids, only a few kids come from poor families. But usually this only happens in developing countries, where corruption cases are quite high.

It's definitely Cameroon's loss and not Mbappe's. This is what corruption brings to a country or a sports league or any organization for that matter. Corruption knows no bounds. It is just a selfish interest and self aggrandizement, nothing of such will be an excuse. Corruption takes any form whether sponsor or not. The national team of Cameroon won't lack such sponsor I believe because the government will provide all that was needed but few top officials will divert it into personal purse.
