Some companies sell water and market it so well to the extent that people believe it is more nutritional than normal clean water when in fact it may just be water. 

This. I am absolutely amazed and baffled when I learned how marketing strategies worked in some specific items. Heck, most of the marketing strategies, specifically advertisements, only make it LOOK like it's good, and that was more than enough to boost their sales by a significant amount.

Granted this only puts out interest in it though, a product/service still needs to retain its quality to let the players actually stay. Just look at some of the top games out there, some game devs with their names can be enough of a guarantee, some with their amazing trailers, but once people try it and it fails to live up to expectation, it just dies down real fast. Especially in this era imo, where a lot of the younger audience have lower attention span (no offense, it's just what the internet made us imo).

I have heard a lot of people say and believe that "if your product or service is good,  it would sell itself". That's not entirely true. 

The saying is true, without any marketing good product or service will still sell. Marketing is used when you need to scale up your business, selling a product or service is one thing, expanding your brand/business is another thing. You can still sell your product and service without marketing but you will stuck on that level. On the other hand, it doesn't matter how good the marketing is, if a business have poor product/service the business will eventually cease to exist.

Marketing is important, but it has to be a mean to advertise benefits and promotions the company offers to its customers. I agree. Marketing is important. But I don't agree that a product is only as good as advertised.

When we talks of marketing there are other keys aspect projects owners or a business owner has to look into because I don't just believe a project would just wake-up and instantly start doing marketing. Most times what causes failure and business folding up is that the owners do not want a collective ideas meaning, CEO's always wants to remain the boss and whatever they said is final.

From my little experience about business, whenever your business is open for a new ideas it also pave ways for new opportunities and for a greater growth and a higher achievement. When a project is purely developed and build properly you noticed a supernatural turnaround of that project. I think market should be the last thing after much more development.

However there are project that doesn't require marketing but they came out big time and people knows about them without going through  all manner of marketing, what I believe too well is that a good business markets itself. Sometimes people manage to go viral, get lucky with something. Or a person can already be famous and thus have an audience from somewhere else without a need for marketing. As for the rest of us, I do believe that investing in ads, a good SMM manager, and nice communications with the target audience are all very important things that can be decisive in terms of success.
