It's an easy way for them to swindle the money of these innocent investors like you. If it is altcoins that you are looking for then I think some of the big coins are the solution like ETH or maybe BNB but in this case I would like to suggest something else because if you really want to be more certain why not just be in bitcoin.
Even though maybe in this case the return is smaller than with altcoins or most shitcoins that are always with their hype and pump and dump schemes but when talking about risk and feasibility of course bitcoin is still the first choice.

I believe that because of the high risk associated with altcoins it is very I hard to give out a guide as to what will make a good potential altcoin for investment and this is something that has indeed led many into investing in shitcoin thinking that their good coins and for that we have to take out extra effort to make personal research on any coin before we put our money down on them and as an investor you have to be able to weight the risk and know what you are in for.

Ethereum is actually a good choice, but never expect that it will be as profitable like bitcoin when bitcoin halving is finally around. XRP seems like a good one since there's a chance the price can pump up (if not already) due to the SEC issue they have (which they're winning from last I heard of). LTC is also having it's halving, and while I have doubts whether its pump is going to benefit it in the long run, at the very least we should be able to see some waves in the short run (so probably not the best to accumulate since you're immediately selling after the halving). The rest of my personal options would be SOL, ETH, and Matic. You can't go wrong with ETH imo, and the other two are just personally what I want to buy.

I would avoid altcoins that are new if you are also new to the industry. That way you can avoid stepping on a trap which is scam coins or dust coins without any product that can back them up.

Indeed, we need to be extra careful in choosing which project to invest in. As you mentioned about FTX and LUNA, it means that even the top coins are not even guaranteed safe although they are way better than those low-valued projects in terms of risk. So this is where diversification plays an important role in investing. We will never put all our eggs in one basket.

I just realized that Syscoin is not in the top 100 anymore. It's an old coin that was created like 10 years ago. Developers are still at work, decent community and their volume remains decent as well. It is also listed on top exchanges. The main reason why I also pick this coin though is because it always breaks its previous ATH per 4-year cycle which is based on the bitcoin halving. ATH is at $1.30 which is more than x10 based on the current price. And I am expecting another ATH in 2025 or early 2026.

I think it's quite important that we could end up with something that will benefit us the most, there is nothing wrong with ethereum but if you put all your eggs in one basket that will make it harder to get out if anything happens. To be fair it's unlikely that ETH would crash while others stay, it has to be something majorly wrong at ETH to make that a thing, and I doubt that will happen, it looks like a very established code, so I doubt it would have any attacks that crash it.

The best thing to do is to just diversify mate. Say a maximum of 5 coins. You can buy 1 or 2 new altcoins and then the other 3 coins will be bitcoin and the other altcoins that are already at the top or at the very least continues to thrive like Syscoin. Syscoin is an old coin that is continuously being traded by the top exchanges and it also has decent trade volume so chances are slim of it getting delisted. Syscoin is also establishing its own all-time highs every 4-year cycle just like bitcoin. I am not promoting it, just stating it as an example of the coin that I am risking for possible high returns in the next bull run.

Alts are very much risky specially the new ones. I recently invested in Polygon (MATIC) when it was around 1 USD and there were news that it has innovative features and will surely go to 5$ or 20$ in long run. arguably these coins are rising high initially and slowly losing its value. but we haven't yet reached to the point where bullrun is coming so we don't really know what potential these coins hold actually.
i would say that these coins might be quite best altcoin to accumulate right now after the vested airdrops are all unlocked like with sui since they still have remaining coins vested that definitely gonna disrupt the growth of these coins but once all the vested getting unlocked i'm sure it will build its way up to another height of all time high.
the only problem being, there are much more l2 and l1 gonna be released in the upcoming future, whether these two coins could hold up pretty well thats another question honestly.

That top 20 is a great way of thinking, because that's the one that will make you the most profit and they are there for a reason. People think that low cap coins have a chance but the reality is that they are low cap for a reason and they are not going to go up, it is rarely ever happens after the first 3 months of a new coin ends, it is going to rank somewhere and usually stay there.

There are more coins who drop 10+ rank than coins who climb 10+ rank, not that it doesn't happen but it is less frequent and there is no need to try to find it. Instead, focus on top 20 and remove some even in there, I removed about 6-7 of the top 20 and then bought the rest personally, it is much better that way when you trust it so much.

These are logical and safe choices. I would pick more risky and newer coins though. I follow Polygon, Arbitrum and Optimism as well. These three are the good altcoins right now as in, they belong to the top choices of the most. I hold ETH and BNB but with SOL, I think that it's too late for me to jump on that ship because it has already moved to $100 but the ATH of it hasn't been seen yet.

Solana really did came back from deads. well it was not totally dead but after FTX and alameda incidents Solana was one of the project which got effected badly. but now after a long time we can see that Solana gradually recovered. and again got traders and investors trust back.

If you ask me, for altcoin in february 2024, choose one or both of eth, bnb, and Solana. It's reason because use reference of coinmarketcap to choose it, For Solana, I think a fast growth since November 2023, and low fee also increased activity in Solana DApps. The expensiveness of the other major altcoins means that they're good if they have started from a very cheap price.
ETH for example has been there like became $10 on 2016 to early 2017 and then look how much it's priced in now.
The same goes for the other altcoins but not all of them are worth it, the liquidity is there and all you have to do is to decide what you'll buying with how much you've got.

yeah agreed with your opinion. Its wise to invest with good altcoins even those altcoins are eligible for holding too if necessary. But when its come to new altcoins or memecoins, where the their destination is unknown, that time better to sold them with profit which is the best revenge for these cryptocurrency. Otherwise these altcoins could drive you in loss. But good altcoins are profitable most of the time if they can operates properly
