https://futurism.com/the-byte/tire-burning-bitcoin-mining

A Pennsylvania crypto company wants to burn tires to fuel Bitcoin mining — and community members from the area surrounding the proposed blazes are furious.

I don't blame them. I wouldn't want tire smoke in my neighborhood either just so some bitcoin miner can make a few bucks...

They are probably going to be blocked by regulators from doing that, because of all the toxic chemicals that will be created from the burning in the process and the lack of an air-purifying solution before sending the waste products back to nature. Also climate change is a big deal so regulators will be more wary of people hurting the environment to make a few bucks.

You gotta love the current chaos and dramas our world has gotten too  Grin

Not that I support the tire burning plan but the fact that it says something about mining Bitcoins, then boom! A huge headline!
How many tires have been burnt before aimlessly anyway? hahaha

Everything about this world is a joke these days, from the noisy activists to those who do anything silly just to make some money.

I'm not so sure about that. i could see them just letting them burn those tires and smoke billowing in to the air. black thick smoke maybe.

apparently tire burning is a thing though.

what would you do if a big bitcoin mining farm opened up right next to your house and thick black smoke was billowing up and enveloping your entire property 24/7? you wouldn't like bitcoin very much in that case i can guarantee you.

Source mentioned on article your showed mentioned this. With only 2 miles (or about 3.2 KM) distance, no wonder people are concerned. It's a shame they decide not to do it on facility far from residential area and now they might have to spend money for legal and PR.
those poor people are going to have to put up with thick black smoke 24/7 if the government doesn't step in.  Shocked

So if I read this correctly, the company already asked for permission and the regulation is allowing them to do it? Sounds like the key issue is the terrible regulation related to environmental concerns. Whether they want to use it to mine or not, a similar debate will arise if the law is not changed. Looks like this is not the first time either. Another company already did a similar thing in the past, which begs the question if the lobbying is not strong enough or if the company went bankrupt before any harm was done. CMIIW.

It is hard for me to imagine that someone could come up with such a stupid idea, especially since the news does not come from a third world country, but from the US. Far from the fact that there are only roses blooming and honey flowing in the streams, but the people who thought of it never seem to have felt the stench that arises when burning rubber. To me, it seems like the idea of some third-rate manager who wanted to prove himself as someone who can make a profit out of garbage.

Obviously, car tires are a hot topic these days, although some others use them in a completely different way Roll Eyes

I guess the question really is why? Tires are usually shredded and the rubber and metal recycled.

Not to mention the costs vs energy density. Tire rubber has a much lower energy density then a lot of other things so unless you have the tires onsite the cost to move them there is going to be high.

Seems like either it's a scam to get investors money OR it's an answer in search of a problem.

Remember all you are doing is burning something to create heat, to create steam to turn the turbines in the generator. There are better things to burn...

I tried to find a better source for this story, and you can read it ----> https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/aug/31/bitcoin-mining-plan-pennsylvania-tire-burning

Quote
Stronghold has been burning coal waste to create cheap power for cryptocurrency since 2021, when it bought the Panther Creek power plant in Nesquehoning, Pennsylvania. It is a controversial approach because although the removal of coal waste can help remediate contaminated land, the process emits greenhouse gases and other harmful chemicals. It can take twice as much waste coal to produce the same amount of electricity that regular coal would produce.

The company also says it sometimes needs to burn tire-derived fuel – made of shredded vehicle tires – to make the combustion of waste-coal more efficient.

From what I understand, it is a plan to improve the efficiency of burning coal waste by burning tire-derived fuel - made from shredded car tires - and perhaps the reason for this is that the quality of coal waste is low.
In general, this company receives government subsidies, and I do not think that it will present a stupid plan that will lead to public discontent, especially since its field is burning coal waste and it has a temporary permit.

From the fragments that fall from above, such folk wisdom can save, but the price of such protection is free. But crumb rubber is used in construction and manufacturing, and I have seen machines that process car tires into raw materials. But I didn't see tire burning plants because it pollutes the air a lot.

Ironic they are not even burning coal but coal waste.

So, Stronghold makes it in the news again, I swear these guys have the most outrageous ideas sometimes, they've managed to get away with the first thing as in "disposing" or coal waste and residue through some mumbo jumbo of regulations and by saying that burning the coal waste is better than leaving it like that, although everyone with a brain would realize that 1 meter of soil on top of that would have been the best eco-friendly solution but now...78,000 tons of tires a year!!!

One stupid stunt like this and nobody is buying that eco-friendly crap the bitcoin council was promoting.

I guess the question really is why? Tires are usually shredded and the rubber and metal recycled.

Tax credits for disposing of the tires?
I know they are a thing in the cement industry but I don't know much about the others, at least not in the US!

anything that spins the turbines i guess is fair game these days. bitcoin won't be making alot of friends with that type of thing though. people shouldn't have to be breathing smoke from tires powering bitcoin antminers.

or just retread them and let people drive on them.

just imagine if the entire world started burning tires. the earth would go into another ice age with all that thick black smoke blocking the sun's precious rays. all thanks to bitcoin...

i dont know but  that doesn't mean i want more of them doing it.

not that i know of. in general i dont think i would support a company that wasn't environmentally conscious. just like i dont think we need to spending billions and trillions on nuclear weapons to destroy the world. i guess that's a different topic though.

as well it should. if this is what proof of work is all about is burning hazardous waste and polluting communities then I understand why proof of stake got pushed as an alternative. i guess now every tom dick and harry is going to be trying to find old tires on the sides of roads so they can go feed their antminer in their back yard.

So I have been doing a bunch of looking around and it seems that yes, people are using tire shred to boost the burn temp and some others things when burning other sub optimal materials. So although it is polluting it's polluting then just burning the tires or just burning the other stuff to make the steam for the generators.

But, from what few things I did find it's still a shit show of pollutants.

Not going to post links since I really don't know how accurate what I found was. But web searches do bring up some things.

what would you do if a big bitcoin mining farm opened up right next to your house and thick black smoke was billowing up and enveloping your entire property 24/7? you wouldn't like bitcoin very much in that case i can guarantee you.
I, the community around me and the state etc would sue the crap out of them regardless of that the facility is doing/producing... In short, for decades *that* kind of pollution is no longer tolerated in most countries.

These days pollution tends to be not-so-visible gaseous emissions because particulates and smells are removed. As long as they follow the rules and regulations - no problem.

- For bitcoin to succeed the community must police itself -    My info useful? Donations welcome! 1FuzzyWc2J8TMqeUQZ8yjE43Rwr7K3cxs9

maybe so but you can never let your guard down because the minute you do there's companies ready and willing to start burning tires to mine bitcoin i guess! so i guess these poor folks in the linked article need to find a good attorney.
