Yet having a nuclear reactor to power a nerdminer could va an overkill.

It would still be an excellent comedy sketch.  Cheesy

We could feature it in a new “Home Improvement” series.

I don't know if you know, but a NERDMINER must use about ~16Wh per day. Which means that a 10W - 5V - 2A solar panel, together with a 10,000mAh power bank, would be enough to power the miner. That is, of course, if you live in a region where you get several hours of sun a day.
This setup is capable of being less than $50.
According to the OP, it uses under 2W. So that's up to 48 Wh/day. You'll need a slightly larger solar panel. But since it also requires a computer with USB connector, you'll need a bit more than that.

We could feature it in a new “Home Improvement” series.

Let's deal with the important questions first: who's playing Heidi?

But since it also requires a computer with USB connector, you'll need a bit more than that.

No computer is required for daily operations after the initial setup.
As I said, mine is connected to a powered USB behind my monitor.

Let's deal with the important questions first: who's playing Heidi?

I am quite scared by the answer to this (very relevant) question.

The model the OP has is the LILYGO T-Display S3, which actually uses a bit more power. If we opt for the ESP32-WROOM-32 model, the power consumption is much lower.

Despite this, the model indicated in the OP, according to the official website, only uses 1W. Anyway, even if it's 2W, it's still not unrealistic to make it work with a solar panel and a power bank.

We have to take into account that this would only be a test scenario, which would only serve for personal experience and knowledge. In turn, it would not be completely useless material, as it could be used in other scenarios.

I guess I just have a hard time understanding why anyone would want to spend money on a completely futile practical experience, while you can learn more without the hardware. I learned a lot about (CPU) mining around this post, and reached higher hash rates than this Nerdminer.

Because it's practical.
This is a very easy task to accomplish.
The expectation is to lure someone into more adventurous stuff, like digging deeper into the Bitcoin protocol.

It happened to me when I [REDACTED] was presented with a very easy task, which gave me a glimpse of the beauty of the complete problem.
This is where I became passionate about that particular task and put much effort into it.

LoyceV, you are only looking at the mining part and the possible return on it.

I already know what it's like to mine bitcoin directly with GPU, that's how I got some satoshis in 2013-2014. But, I never had the opportunity to mine with an ASIC or other specific equipment. I would like to have this opportunity, but the machines have absurd prices - even the used ones, in addition to the current energy cost. So, acquiring this type of equipment and doing some tests, with a low cost involved, is a more or less practical way of being involved.

Another point, in this case I am talking about using solar energy, it can be an excellent way to train DIY on this topic, test various setups and check how everything works. This could develop other ideas or even projects that are much more relevant to this area or others.

When you read about the subject, you will never understand in practice the problems or doubts that may be involved. You will read about them, and you will even understand how they were resolved. But, you don't understand why these problems occur, because sometimes the cause or solution to a problem has several variables.

This ends up being the same as driving, you can read, watch videos and even play driving simulators. But sitting in a car and driving in reality will always be different. Theoretical experience will help you in many things, but it will always be different from practical experience, which is much better.

A little update from Public Pool:

Currently, they have, considering only open software and operating hardware:

So 63,430 NerdMiners produce slightly more output than a single Bitaxe Hex. I'm amazed they managed to sell that many devices.

Maybe not even 1 third of them were sold, by the team that developed the software.
If you go to AliExpress these machines are sold for $3-$5. So, it's stupidly cheap, so many people wanted to play with it. You just need to buy that little piece, configure it with their software, and you're good to go.

Remember that with that single M5 Stick, you can do many more playing other than Nerdminers. YOu can flash it and have an Open Source Jade, for example. Again, there are some limitations, but the point is having fun tinkering (Again, LoyceV might struggle with that, as an AI Cheesy)

A little update on the numbers needed to mine a block with the nerdminer:

I also added the s21 Hydro as a benchmark, as it is the currently most efficient miner.
