It's not really gambling per se, it's more like that roller coaster ride of emotions. How old is your friend? It should be more apparent the older you are, it's not an exaggeration when you see shows of people having heart attacks or something similar when they're agitated or not. Have been in this world many times and I can feel his anger. Sometimes, isn't there fault, some situations will make you have hopes and them all of sudden, it collapse and then you have to start again. In this case there is really no way to feel something different, because to turn 1$ into 2500$ and lose everything right after, without enjoying the money is a real golden opportunity dropped on the garbage. When I am talking about gamblers who are gambling for the sake of interest (profits and winning), the person that you mentioned is one of them. Some might gamble just for fun, but other gamblers can't or will not gamble for fun. Even if a gambler is gambling for fun, there will be a limited time for the fun and when the losing starts, that's when the person has gone low on funds.

When you gamble, it's either a win or a lose. Reasons nwe get vexed or angry is because we're simply over expectant. Though, I've been in such conditions twice I know what it feels like and it sucks.
