I just got an old piece of laptop recently (temporary). So I was thinking of trying a linux distro as a daily user. I can't change it again and again. I'm reposting this as a topic this time.

My requirements aren't that much. Everything a windows user can do should be enough for me. As example, browsing, writing in Microsoft word (or any other word alternative), gaming a little (Age of empire, call of duty etc), Using VPN, programming in visual studio code, watching movies and stuff etc.

Also the distro has to be stable, bug free with LTS support. And able to customize a little would be nice (Not heavy but only little). The OS itself shouldn't lag, or have any performance issue.

I have heard many people saying they face problem when installing drivers, especially graphics drives, so I'm unsure of what to do with that.

Previously I was thinking of using Linux Mint Xfce 21.2 Victoria edition, later I though of using MATE edition. But now I got confused again. So here I am, asking for the suggestion, from the seniors.

My specs:
  • CPU: Core i-5-7200U @ 2.50 GHz 2.71 GHz
  • Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 940MX
  • RAM: 8 GB
  • SSD: 240 GB

You have an nvidia card so put Ubuntu on it. Or any of the other flavors of Ubuntu.

I think Xfce is lighter than MATE. I recommend using the xfce version only, no need to use a distro like Linux Mint because there are bugs in Linux. n

I didn't find Linux mint META as I thought it would be. Also the default package manager (flat hub) contained apps that were huge. Just telegram was 3GB in size due to flat hub installing all the required repositories. Later I changed my package manager to Snap Store. Still I think I'll change my distro again as I find Mint not of my likings. I'll give Ubuntu a try.

Can you specify which flavor of Ubuntu can be best for me? I checked the official website of Ubuntu and found two versions of it.

  • Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS
  • Ubuntu 23.10
