Yesterday I lost 11 BTC from my Bitcoin Core 25.0 wallet.  The wallet wasn't open at the time.  I don't know how it happened. Lots of emotions right now.

edit to add:

Definitely not my wife. We live in a rural setting. She doesn't have the computer knowledge to even launch the wallet. This was an external hack.

I first noticed when I logged into Koinly and saw my BTC balance was reduced.  I then launched Bitcoin Core and it was about a week behind.  Showed my 11btc as it updated, then hit the date of the hack and it went to zero.  Wallet is encrypted and appears to work fine. PC is turned off now and hard drives will be wiped. This definitely sucks, but not the end of the world.  Opportunity for others to learn or be reminded from my mistakes.

Also, the coins have not moved from hacker address.   After further investigation this looks to have been caused by a botnet.

edit 2:

All of my addresses in Bitcoin Core are segwit.  I can't seem to find a way to create a signed message with segwit and Bitcoin Core.  If you don't believe my post that's fine.  I'm not looking to gain anything, just want to tell my story so others don't make the mistakes I did.

TX IDs of the four transactions that drained my wallet:

I checked your post history, and you seem to be playing with altcoins a lot. Maybe you installed an altcoin wallet with malicious code in it? With that said, unless you truly know what you're doing, it's quite careless to have 11 BTC on Bitcoin Core on a personal device.

Anyway, good luck moving forward.

Sorry for the loss. But why have huge amount of coins on an online wallet? The safest wallets are offline/cold and multisig wallets. If you know you can not run your node with cold wallets or with multisig, do not have huge amount of coins on it.

We need more information to be able to piece together what happened.

The Bitcoin Core was running on what OS?

What were you doing around the time of the theft?

Bitcoin Core wallets are protected by a password, they don't use seed phrase technology but rely on some "hdseed" that's similar but will not be encrypted without a password. Therefore if the wallet file is stolen, it can be brute-forced for weak passwords.

I would like to believe you, but many accounts claim to have lost Bitcoin. Therefore, to make the discussion serious, can you sign a message from a Bitcoin address proving that 11 Bitcoins were sent from that address in the past days?

Have you updated Bitcoin Core and verified the signature? By reviewing your previous posts, you mentioned that you purchased Bitcoin in 2013. Perhaps you did not download the correct software.

Well, the hacker obviously got hold of the password... to be able to do that. Did you leave your computer running for extended times without watching it? (They could have installed keyboard logging tools and waited for you to leave the room and then logged in and transferred the funds)  Huh

The bulk of my "treasure" are stored off-line so I know that it will not be accessible .....and it is split into smaller amounts, so even if someone hack me, they will only get access to say 1% of my coins.

I also put out "bait" in the form of small amounts of coins in desktop wallets ...so if that is triggered, then I know I am being targeted.

Sorry for your loss.  Sad Sad Sad

Sorry for the loss OP, I know nobody is above mistakes because for some thing like this to happened for 11 Bitcoin to disappear from your core wallets, show that some thing strange happened to your personal details before but you didn't notice it before the incident happen. But 11 Bitcoin is not advisable for someone to store huge amount of Bitcoin on online wallet, because there are some details your siblings or your wife will discover and it will give them access to your coins immediately and they will withdraw everything at the moment. Well, this is a lesson to those that like holding huge amount of coins on their online wallet where there are many offline wallets secure and safe for any amount of coins.

If you have not installed that voice changer software, the hacker will not be able to easily access your bitcoins.
Wing FTP Server is a multi-operating system software that you can use to manage and supports multiple file transfer protocols such as FTP, FTPS, and SFTP. The program itself is not a virus, but if you connect to a server that has viruses, it may be downloaded to your device, but you still need administrator privileges to execute it. again, without executing these programs, it is difficult to be hacked unless you do it indirectly, such as Clipboard Hijacker Malware.

I'm very sorry for you, I can't even image how you feel right now. I don't store any bitcoin information on my computer but if I were, I would never let anyone use it, not even to check his/her Facebook or email. A friend of mine lost a few bitcoins because his mother used once his computer, I don't remeber what se did, I think she clicked on some link she wasn't supposed to and they stole everything.

Apart from your wife who else has access to your computer? Right now there are several options; which include someone else accessing your wallet physically and sending your coins to their wallet or malware so you’d have to help us narrow it down, let’s start by you answering the question I asked initially, does anyone else aside from your wife know the password to your computer? And also how often do you use your system to access sites that may not be secure? There’s a possibility that the malware (if it was caused be one) might have been in your system for some time before they finally got activated and acts.

That is a big loss. By the way move forward. And think and learn from your mistake. This loss is teaching you a lesson and you should learn from it. I think this happen because you give an access to your device to hackers. It can be an application or a link or any other sources which have that kind of links which make a bridge for the hackers. So you should be careful in the future and I will recommend if you have a big amount like this so always use a hardware wallet to store it. And if you want to store online so buy a separate device for this purpose. I am feeling sad due to your loss. By the way just leave and move on. Now what was supposed to happen has already happened.

1. What is voice changer software?

2. Does your wife know about your bitcoin? Is it possible she was involved?

3. Did you run anti-malware and virus scanner software after the loss?

Very sad, 11 BTC lost, you need a very strong mentality to stay sane, try to remember, was there the last person to use your PC besides your wife?
Installing anything without security is very vulnerable on a PC or cellphone because there is so much malware circulating that without us even realizing it, just clicking on an image can cause loss.
there is no hope of coming back, so just keep living

Damn, sorry for your loss. But I'd like to hear more details. What exactly were you doing before that happened? And why didn't you put your BTC in a cold wallet? Also when were you able to get that 11 BTC?

Talked to my wife.  She tried to install a voice changer software yesterday from a link on twitter and it didn't install.  This is a windows 11 PC.  I see something new called WingFtpServer as a startup program. That has to be it. C'est la vie  Embarrassed
I think your wife isn't telling you full

Why does this voice changing software need a some kind a ftp-server? Is this software cloud based? Tell me the name of the software? Have you uninstalled this software? Provide information from the windows registry? Or did your wife say that this program has already been removed?

You gave your wife access. After it you lost money. This is the basis for initiating a case. Even if she doesn't understand computers, she caused you damage through negligence. Let her pay you compensation for damages

Clicking a link in Twitter was already a mistake, never trust anyone except the official site. But the first mistake is why you hold your 11 coins in a PC which still connected with internet, a hardware wallet price didn't even close to 1 BTC.

You might blame your wife, but it's actually both of you are make mistakes. Since it's high likely you will not able to reclaim back your coins, you can only learn how to protect it for the next coins you hold.

If you are sure about that, maybe there are more reasons to check your PC and the applications available on it, and also make sure there are no hidden applications because most of those malware applications are making themselves hidden, so better run a diagnostic and full scan of your PC. But there are maybe more reasons, like what websites you are accessing; that's one reason for a malware or virus to get through to your PC. Anyway, sorry for the loss. It is regretful because the bitcoin amount is not a joke—11 BTC? That cost a lot, and I can feel how sad and heartbroken you are. If there is a way to recover your loss, I hope you've found it and recovered your loss. Now that you know what to do next, you need to keep your PC containing your assets safer. You should have a separate PC for personal things that could make your assets prone to malicious malware and viruses scattered around the internet.

There is only one conclusion here. Do not give anyone access to your wallets. And especially to their wives. If you want to save your marriage

Install and test all programs in any operating environment, just not near your wallets

Beware of shenanigans everywehere

He said he never gave any wallet access to his wife, she used the computer and clicked/downloaded a program, that is (probably) the problem. And the point is that bitcoins, or whatever crypto with some actual value, shouldn't be kept in a computer that is used by multiple people because you can be aware of some stuff but other don't.

Sucks.

If you plan on running it back — you either use a hardware wallet or have your wallet installed on a device that's not actually being used for personal reasons like this one you mentioned. With your wallet being THAT exposed, it's been inevitable that your wallet will get hacked.

I always suggest using or at least reading the glacier protocol https://glacierprotocol.org/ guide to set up a "state of the art" cold wallet. and to understand all security implications.

I recommend OP (but I'm sure he knows) to avoid any service that talks about "recovering stolen bitcoins" or similar things. These are only scam and will drain other value Sad
At most, rely on some service to "track" these coins...

That could be the potential entry point for the breach. Most likely, the hacker didn't leave anything behind. That is a learning experience, but if that happened to me with such a large amount, I might have a mental breakdown, especially if that's the only remaining asset I have, and it disappears in an instant. You need to improve your cybersecurity practices, and your family or colleagues should also have knowledge about it. I consider my PC/laptop as personal belongings, so I hope there's no interference, even if we're married. By the way, do you know if your wife used your PC and informed you about what she was going to do before the incident happened?

Yesterday I lost 11 BTC from my Bitcoin Core 25.0 wallet.  The wallet wasn't open at the time.  I don't know how it happened. Lots of emotions right now.

It seems like your PC got infected with a virus and malware for which your coins are lost or hacker. Really sad to hear about this loss. Moreover you should have been extra careful, when you have big funds invested in Bitcoins. You should have used hardware wallets like Trezor to store the coins for extra security. Now nothing much can be done. If possible try tracing the address and see if it gets linked to any exchanges, then you can request the exchange for the person’s identity who hacked you and can hunt him down. But this happens rarely to find the hacker’s details.

Damn, that is a huge lost, 11 BTC is something that everyone has been dreaming of, I mean just 1 BTC could be a good hold for us and sure that majority hasn't reach that goal.

Again, as others have said, you or your wife has installed something, like a malware that is not detectable even by anti-virus software because the author of the malware is really that good and outsmart the current sets of AV. I'm not sure about WingFtpServer, but if she downloaded a crack software, then that should be it.

That is a huge amount of money and it might be good for him to track the coin. If the coin is sent to an exchange, it is possible that the hacker can be known. But hackers are smart, it is possible that the hacker used a noncustodial wallet and he may also mix the coin before spending it. It is better to avoid hack than to be looking for solution which might be difficult and expensive to get or which might be impossible to get.

That might be the suspect.
That's also the main reason why I don't want other people to use my computer. Even my partner doesn't have any access to my computer. She has her own laptop so I guess there's no reason for her to touch my computer, or at least if she will use it, I'm on her side so I can still see what she is doing.

I'm always very careful with everything that I'm downloading online. From extensions to wallet software of different altcoins. I always triple-check before I click the download button because there's always a chance that it might contain malware especially if it comes from a different website.

Learning really is a very expensive thing, and I've been always saying that ever since. Now your learning costs you 11 BTC. I mean if only you have a hardware wallet then at least your coins are safer, but nevertheless, it is what it is. You said already "That's life" so I guess the only thing that I will say is to move on, move forward, and start from scratch again. I know it will be hard, but I know and we know you can do it. Try to check first, hire an IT guy to do the checking to see if it's your wife downloading that software was the cause of all this I am sure that there's probably more to this or I am wrong and you already did your due diligence on checking all the possibilities, I guess it is what it is on this one.

Hey OP. Do you know your hacked BTC-address, right?

All you have to do is track the transactions on it. Are there already some transactions there since your hack? The final wallet where these 11 bitcoins will end up - will be the scammers address. Make a printout of the scammers' transactions and send it to the FATF

Immediately write to all blockchain observers to have this address marked as a scam to make it difficult for shenanigans to withdraw from it

You gave your wife access. After it you lost money. This is the basis for initiating a case. Even if she doesn't understand computers, she caused you damage through negligence. Let her pay you compensation for damages

Pay with what? A “divorce”? And then the kidsif they have any will live in a broken home because of a situation that could have been resolved without cause more harm that has already been done. It’s a husband and wife thing if she’s an understanding person she could agree to support the man with what she has since he has lost a significant amount (it’s still not known if she’s the cause, because she was the last person to operate the computer does not automatically mean she did the error) and their relationship will continue to grow as usual rather than looking to file for her to pay damages.

Its too early to assume the wife did it without carrying out a proper check on the entire system.

Yep you got it.

You made lots of mistakes. You kept your coins on a windows pc which you used it to download shady programs… means it is also connected to the internet and you are not a newbie too.

It is like You wanted to get hacked and you accomplished it.

Money business is serious business which takes serious responsibility. R.i.p 11 btc…

Now you know what to do and what not to… next time

I wish this is untrue because 11 BTC is quite a huge amount of money. I went through your profile and I saw that you signed up 2014, so you're quite old here and must have been following the discussion on the forum. You would have known that keeping your Bitcoin online poses security risk, also you had other malware-infested apps running on device, which wasn't a good security practice. You would have stored your Bitcoin in a cold storage using multi-sig wallet. You were really careless, and I'm sorry for your loss.

Yesterday I lost 11 BTC from my Bitcoin Core 25.0 wallet.  The wallet wasn't open at the time.  I don't know how it happened. Lots of emotions right now.

You are a very old user, you have been involved with Bitcoin for almost 10 years and you know a lot about the security of different wallets. But consider whether it is wise for you to keep your 11 BTC in a wallet. You were careless about the security of your wallet which may have caused you to face huge losses. Although I know no words to comfort you, I wish you well.
Since your wallet is not opening you can try from one device to another. Moreover, if the wallet requires an update, then you should consider the update.

I'm also concerned about what OP is going through right now. Yes. that True, maybe it's a late mistake and we know However, Bitcoins may take some time to transfer from one address to another.

So, apart from that, is there another solution that is easy and capable of returning 11 BTC to its rightful ownership, in this case the OP himself.

The scammers must have tumbled and CoinJoined this input many times already, in order make it difficult to trace and link the input to an output, it is also difficult to get your local authorities and exchanges to cooperate with you to track down an address, especially when it isn't a major hack and you are not one of the 'special clients' to an exchange. The scammers would also not be stupid to send the stolen funds into a centralized exchange or an address that centralized services control and can confiscate.

Really😢 most times this is why I prefer to use good CEX with a good asset security measures. I use Bitget and that’s because I’m very sure of their security. Also they always carryout regular security implementations to assure their customers of 100% security.

It’s only possible to track the transaction and the current wallet where the money enters, I doubt if OP uses a CEX.

Writing to FATF wouldn’t have been a necessity if he was using a CEX, the transaction would’ve been very easy to track. This is one of the reasons why it’s good to use CEX.

Talked to my wife.  She tried to install a voice changer software yesterday from a link on twitter and it didn't install.  This is a windows 11 PC.  I see something new called WingFtpServer as a startup program. That has to be it. C'est la vie  Embarrassed

Damn bro, that's rough. WingFtpSperver seems to be a legit application, but perhaps you downloaded a virused version:

https://www.download3k.com/Antivirus-Report-Wing-FTP-Server.html

I don't know much about it but it sounds like it could be mis-used in a variety of ways.

If you know the exact name of the voice changer software it would be helpful to post it here.

Also, following the path of the BTC might help. Feel free to PM me if you need help with that, or paste the hacker's address here, if you're comfortable.

Sorry for your lost OP. That number of bitcoin should be kept in a hardware wallet or in a cold storage wallet and not on an online wallet. Next time don't share your computer or phone that you have your bitcoin wallet in with anyone even with your wife, because you might understand how you watch and restrict your activities online but the other person might not, and it will make they will make you vulnerable to attack from what they intend to do with your PC. This is a sad news, you have learnt a hard lesson to keep your coins from online wallets.

We are all sorry for your loss. These BTC cannot be returned. Let this be a lesson for all the inexperienced. Thank you for sharing your problem publicly.

I want to tell you one important thing. You're in trouble now. You are now in such a state, ready to believe anyone who promises you a return. And various scammers can take advantage of this. If someone writes to you in a PM and promises to return your money for a small reward, be sure that this is a 100% shenanigans

No PM. Only public discussion of the problem

Feel free to PM me if you need help with that
For what? Let him post it publicly about about all the nuances of this sitiation

Surprising, really surprising for me who has never had that much Bitcoin at all. This is bad news and you need to research it carefully to find out where it went wrong so that your wallet could be hacked by bad people. But if you are very emotional about the incident, try to calm yourself first, even though it is quite natural for someone to be emotional if the amount of Bitcoin lost is that much. And I hope you can find the cause and the person who stole it.

This really sucks & there’s nothing anybody can say to make it any better. You really shouldn’t be using that computer for anything other than Bitcoin Core. If you must use the computer for other things then cold storage is much safer with Ledger or Trezor. I hope you can recover from this, sorry it happened to you.

But you can't tell clearly if your Bitcoin wallet is hacked or damaged. If your wallet password or Security Seedphase is lost, your 11 BTC will be lost forever. And if you don't login for a lot of time, there might be a problem with your device or network line. If you keep trying to login your wallet repeatedly, if there is a device error, turn it off and try again.

Also, the coins have not moved from hacker address

Sad, it means my method won't help you.

I want to clarify - can you see outgoing transactions from your wallet address? transactions which you didn't do. transactions of a hacker who transferred your money from your wallet to himself

Do you know how to use blockchain-explorers?

For example

windows 11 has updated security but there are unknown kind of malicious/ pc virus that windows defender fail to defend yet. As you said, she was trying to install a voice changer software, clicking Twitter links, might be the reason. Although software didn't install but may be virus get downloaded to your device & get installed that time. But after that, there are so many step to crack for hack your 11 btc. Core wallets are protected by a password, hard to get crack only if you use weak password. But chance is less here. But i suggest, use a freash device , not for fault useage but only for store your cryptocurrencies, otherwise i found many users experienced such hacking incidents

Don't do this. All malware should be there as evidence

All you need to do is sue either the hosting provider or the owner of the domain that hosted the malware that caused you to lose your bitcoins.

If your wife downloaded this voice changing software from the official website, then the likelihood of you winning the case increases

By the way, tell me the name of the voice changing software - we will check it through virustotal

Also, the coins have not moved from hacker address
Since you are sure that Bitcoins are not transferred from your wallet to hackers' wallets. So you can rest assured that it is a temporary fault of your PC or device. Also, if your device is not faulty then you should check the security of your wallet Seedphase. It might be a mechanical fault of your wallet or device.

Wow that really sucks. These things can happen, nobody can see it coming. Even if people here say that they have special security to deal with avoiding situations like this, nobody is really safe.

This can happen to anyone at any time. There is no 100% way to avoid getting scammed, hacked or robbed. It is just part of the human condition.

If I were to guess, I would say you either gave away your seed phrase without knowing it and/or you had malicious software on your device. But you have not really given us much information, so there is nothing to go on.

If OP has not yet formatted his hard drives. It's possible to analyze the behavior of this FTPServer thing and, based on this, calculate where all the paths lead. I think a competent specialist can figure out which servers this malicious program was communicating with. And by servers - a calculate the IP of the thieves lair

Always use a passphrase that is stored only in your head.

So even if someone steals your seedphrase they cant do anything with it without the passphrase.

I think your wife isn't telling you full, Why does this voice changing software need a some kind a ftp-server? Is this software cloud based? Tell me the name of the software? Have you uninstalled this software? Provide information from the windows registry? Or did your wife say that this program has already been removed?

You gave your wife access. After it you lost money. This is the basis for initiating a case. Even if she doesn't understand computers, she caused you damage through negligence. Let her pay you compensation for damages

I don't think the wife knew something about the stolen Bitcoin and I wouldn't blame her. It was the op's fault, he was just careless. I could bet his kids are using the same computer to play games and browse the internet.

Compensation for what? I don't get it, you mean if this were to happen to you, would you get your wife arrested and demand for compensation? You must be a joker. What I know is that all this would have been avoided if he had stored his Bitcoin offline.

I guess that's it; it's confirmed that it was hacked. I understand the feeling, mate. 11 BTC is a significant amount, especially considering the current price. Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do since Bitcoin transactions are irreversible. You just have to learn from the mistake and move on.

I hope you won't blame your wife or anyone if it was lost due to an unintentional mistake. It's not the end of the world. As long as we are alive and in the crypto space, there's still a chance to regain that amount. However, next time, let's be wiser and avoid making the same mistake.

Perhaps consider setting up a dedicated PC for your wallet to prevent compromise in case new applications are installed.

Really😢 most times this is why I prefer to use good CEX with a good asset security measures. I use Bitget and that’s because I’m very sure of their security. Also they always carryout regular security implementations to assure their customers of 100% security.
I have checked your post history and trust feedback, and it is clear that you are shilling for Bitget, so i would advise op and every other newbie reading this post as well as your other posts to ignore anything you say. There is no 'good centralized exchange' for storing your funds, BTC's should not be stored in custodial wallets but in self custodial wallets.

Op sorry for your loss, but there are many things you probably did wrong, your funds should have been stored offline, because anything that is stored online is prone to hacking, only the funds that you need for spending on the go ought to be in an online wallet.

People are different. Some people love, but others get divorced because of an unprepared dinner. If OP is ready to forgive his wife for 11 btc, then everything is fine

There is little information, so we have to draw different conclusions.

Why did an elderly wife from a rural area need a program to change her voice? So, after all his wife understand computer software very well? If she was able to install the program, that means she is at least an advanced user

Why OP don't tells what this software is called? It's a secret or sometning?

Talked to my wife.  She tried to install a voice changer software yesterday from a link on twitter and it didn't install.  This is a windows 11 PC.  I see something new called WingFtpServer as a startup program. That has to be it. C'est la vie  Embarrassed
windows 11 has updated security but there are unknown kind of malicious/ pc virus that windows defender fail to defend yet.

No operating system is completely safe and immune to hackers and viruses whether it is linux or macOS...the safety of computers depends on how we use them.

This is completely the OP's fault, not the wife's fault. He owns a large amount of bitcoin but he does not store it on a hardware wallet or offline device. He used a device with an online connection to store bitcoins, which was a big mistake. Meanwhile OP is not a newbie and he also understands the risks of storing bitcoins on regular online devices. This really makes me doubt what the OP is saying.

Also, the coins have not moved from hacker address

give us a transaction hash or maybe list of installed softwares, maybe we can help

First things first, why would you store 11 btc on a hot wallet ?  11 bitcoin is a lot of money, and you should either have a hardware wallet for that purpose or if you are a bit techy, an air gapped device (with no access to the internet) should be configured for your bitcoins.
11 bitcoin is a life's money for someone and there are places in the world where you do not have to work for the rest of your life if you have 11 bitcoins with you   Huh

Yes, I can see the coins moved in  to two addresses in the explorer

Is this possible that you can share the transaction hashes? Someone may try to dig more once they know which transactions we are taking about. Whether the coins were moved to exchanges and all such investigations?

Scan your computer and try to find anything suspicious. Other apps, and links, if your accounts connected to your pc are exposed. If you see something new, try to confirm if it has something to do with losing your Bitcoin. It may be the app that was installed, or there are other links that were opened by your wife without knowing that it's a suspicious link. See your browsing history for more clues/evidence.

OP, request logs from your internet-provider on the day of the incident. the faster the better - logs are not stored forever. you can analyze outgoing traffic and understand exactly where the leak occurred

There may be some less security to your wallet that is the result of hacked. As you didn't put some strong password may be in cade you have found it,  you should go fort he recovery option. But still confusing how more btc as 11 btc you hold in a single wallet.. It should be in different wallets because if it was present in the different wallets then there will be less risks to the losing all money even if one or two wallets hacked the the remaining funds will be safe.

Although the wallet you used for the bitcoin may be some software related to malicious viruses or hack attack that due to which you lost them. BTW I feel sad for you,  losing this type of amount is quite harming for a person who has already been in trading and the way today the market is understandable.

Yesterday I lost 11 BTC from my Bitcoin Core 25.0 wallet.  The wallet wasn't open at the time.  I don't know how it happened. Lots of emotions right now.

One of the safest means to have your bitcoin under your control is in using bitcoincore, but when things like this happened, then there must be something hidden and unexposed to you, who ever have access to your system aside your wife, who taught you about how to make use of bitcoincore, do you also browse the internet with that same system you used for your wallet, how do you safe keep your wallet private keys, all of these are means through which you could have been attacked without knowing as i guess.

Also, the coins have not moved from hacker address

     -  Don't you have a hardware wallet or Trezor? because if you don't have that, it will come out as if you are careless. 11 BTC is not a small amount, to be honest. If I had that amount of bitcoin, for sure, I would buy a Trezor and a hardware wallet to make sure my bitcoin was safe.

Now, if you have a Trezor or any hardware wallet, the question will be: how did that happen? because you're the only one who knows seed phrases, right? You also did not mention whether your 11 bitcoins are stored in a noncustodial or hardware wallet.

Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do since Bitcoin transactions are irreversible. You just have to learn from the mistake and move on.
Thank God people are starting to understand how flawed BTC is.

We are recommend everyone to take a closer look at our coin: Bitcoin SV

I think it will be useful for everyone to read this article: Reversing Illicit Transactions on Bitcoin Is Simple

P.S: BTC - is BTC. Real Bitcoin - is Bitcoin Satoshi Vision

clever but since the op has yet to clearly prove this loss. it is possible you are the op. and all was written to lead to your post.

Well, I'm going to differ from the general opinion of the thread, as someone who has 11 bitcoins and is so careless guarding them doesn't give me much sympathy. I might feel more sorry for someone from a poor country who has $400 in bitcoin and gets robbed. In any case, the bastards are the hackers but now there is nothing left for the OP as he said but to learn his lesson and move on.

Talked to my wife.  She tried to install a voice changer software yesterday from a link on twitter and it didn't install.  This is a windows 11 PC.  I see something new called WingFtpServer as a startup program. That has to be it. C'est la vie  Embarrassed

that’s a huge amount and i can’t even express how shocked i am feeling right now

there’s no point in condescending you for your past decisions but may this be a lesson for you to learn if i had this amount of bitcoin i wouldn’t store it in a hot wallet the internet is very risky and even with a secure system sometimes hacking still cannot be prevented

another thing i would advise is for you to get a separate device solely for cryptocurrency social media are full of suspicious links and if you’re using the same device you have your bitcoin stored in to surf social media and download softwares then you’ve already made a mistake

terribly sorry for you but keep on moving forward!

Also, the coins have not moved from hacker address

First things first, why would you store 11 btc on a hot wallet ?  11 bitcoin is a lot of money, and you should either have a hardware wallet for that purpose or if you are a bit techy, an air gapped device (with no access to the internet) should be configured for your bitcoins.
11 bitcoin is a life's money for someone and there are places in the world where you do not have to work for the rest of your life if you have 11 bitcoins with you   Huh
I would formulate the question differently: why store 11 bitcoin in one wallet? It would make more sense to distribute these assets across different wallets, or even across different types (HW manufacturers) of wallets. Diversification, my friend, comes first. Diversification of risks, as many have repeated many times.

It may well be that at the time of purchase, these 11 bitcoin were not a significant amount and OP neglected to keep them safe, for which he seriously paid. It's a pity.

It’s true that OP should have concentrated all his efforts on the safety of these assets, but now the past can't be returned. Despite such impressive losses, life goes on. I wish OP to grow stronger.

I've never signed a message before. These were segwit addresses they don't seem to show up in the sign message feature of Bitcoin core GUI.  I'll See if I can figure it out.

This is close to half a million dollars lost,ouch !!

This was a big loss whichever way we look at this but wanted to ask to help someone not go through the same loss in the future without any finger pointing or playing the blame game . Some questions for better understanding of the situation:
  • Any other people that have access to your computer besides you and your wife?
  • Is the PC always connected to the computer?
  • Saw an early post on the thread of you using Altcoins too, do you have desktop wallets of these?
  • Do you download stuff on this computer
  • Do you have an antivirus on the PC

Otherwise, sorry for your loss buddy!

If you had such a large amount of money then why would you keep it in a place with regulare internet access.
Moreover, why would you give your machine to your wife because it was her mistake to install a third party software.
You shouldn't have let your wife use your machine. Keep a separate machine for regular work or you should have definitely used a hardware wallet instead.

If op were the holder of our coins, then the stolen funds of the would be returned back to the victim and wallets of these hackers would be immediately blocked

Sucks.

I completely agree with all of you. BTC - is irreversible sucks.

I think that op is worried about his privacy. Most likely he will not reveal his wallet address. I don’t see any other reasons why op gives out so little information

11 Bitcoin  Shocked this is really too big amount in  present bitcoin price. Why don't you take care of them where we are worried about 0.5 bitcoins where to hold them and where they will be safe. How did I decide to put 11 bitcoins in an online wallet?  You should have held them in an offline hardware wallet so maybe you wouldn't have lost so much. Such a big loss really hurts us a lot. And when it is through Bitcoin it is really sad.

BIG WINNER!

Omg damm what the big amount loss! So much money has been lost that you should keep your sanity now and put yourself first. How the hacker team collected your wallet information is a matter of thinking. Moreover you might have setup some software from which the hacker team entered your laptop/pc configuration.

BULL SHIT, how the fuck could you block a wallet and return the funds to the owner? Are there actually any mentally retarded individuals using your "TRUE SHITCOIN SCAM" where you have such ability? Or are you trolling us?

Alright, just forget about what I said, man I lost it for a second, Ok, now tell me, do you guys use secp256k1 in your "true" bitcoin network?
If yes, then I might visit you guys soon to check if there is any holes in your blockchain.😉

I think the website this hack came from was

...........

Actually you should stop posting anything other than signed messages using the private key, in fact I might report this topic to be trashed if you fail to do that.

If you have funds in your wallet, transfer them somewhere safe, and sign a message then post them here.

I empathize with you my friend. I thought I read wrongly when you said 11 BTC, and I’m still in shock of what’s lost. But I must commend your strength and ability to bear this. At my position in life, I can’t imagine losing such amount of money. You’re a strong man. Even though it’s gone, I’ll still mention that when you have your crypto wallet and money in it, you have to avoid installing apps and visiting unknown websites. This tip and many more that other forum members will give you will guard you for tomorrow.

My PC is running back up right now. I'll post the signed message after it finishes and I figure out how to do it. If you feel you need to report this post, by all means, do what you feel need to do
I have absolutely nothing against you, just asked you to stop posting anything until you can prove ownership, even then you can't actually prove you were hacked unless you contact local authorities to investigate, therefore I call bs on your claim, especially when you mention bitcoin core.

Still I have nothing against you, but do us a favor and do that,  now for time being lock this topic, we don't want more useless comments.

If op were the holder of our coins, then the stolen funds of the would be returned back to the victim and wallets of these hackers would be immediately blocked
Is this meant to be an advert for your shitcoin, so confiscating and reversing transactions is meant to be an advert for 'your' coin, how ridiculous, if you can block and return funds, you can also do the same for any transaction and to any address, and anyone who doesn't want to lose their funds has to stay away from shitcoins like yours.

BTC is decentralized and censorship resistant, if you have your funds in your self custodial wallet, nobody can block or censor you; that is why we use this network and not yours, take your advert somewhere else.

That's a huge amount you have lost. I can't imagine your feelings, but all I can say for now is better luck next time, and do not hesitate to do anything that you can against that hacker because giving up on something will not bring it back anyway. I know that by not giving up, the chances of getting funds back are also near zero, but doing something rather than doing nothing is far better. And you must have some bravery, as you were holding 11 BTC all at one place.

If I were at your place, I would not hesitate to make 11 or 22 different wallets and then keep 1 or 0.5 BTC in them accordingly. I do realise that the creation and management of 11 or 22 wallets is not an easy task, but it is worth the money.
And you should provide a transaction detail here, so we can verify. If you already provided it in some reply, then I suggest you edit the post and provide the hash or your address there. So new readers find it easy to verify your statements. And if you are sure that you did not do anything vulnerable on your device or shared your password or key with anyone, then I don't have any good solutions or advice for you, but these are the only reasons that would have happened.

This is truly sad. That's a lot of money and can be the type of fortune that everyone desires. The website you've given is even an unknown one and this usually the case from the people that got hacked. They have visited random websites and probably downloaded something and they're warned by their computer about malicious file is gonna be downloaded and yet proceeded the process. It is unlikely that you did nothing and then you got hacked, there must be some websites, apps or anything that you have unnoticed did.

I think the website this hack came from was

voice  dot  testyteste dot com

So, when I open this I get an immediate block and notification from my AV software.
Site en.softaipro.fun blocked, detected botnet.
What were you looking for at that site?

I often tell people that they shouldn't use the computer where they store their coins for anything dangerous, like opening emails, installing unknown software, downloading torrents, unpacking files, connecting thumb drives and other external drives, and so on.

Edit: I missed the message where you said your wife was fooling around with a voice changer. Sorry for your loss. I just hope as many people as possible see this thread and learn from it.
At the very least guys, if you don't want to buy a hardware wallet or you don't want a paper wallet, or a cold storage in the form of wallet file on an an offline device, make sure you have a decent anti virus software and you keep your PC clean. No suspicious sites, no porn, no unofficial software, you know what I'm talking about.

If you don't know how to sign messages maybe this can help you. How to sign a message?!

It's regrettable to lose 11 BTC that's a huge amount we thought, but why not choose a cold wallet as suggested by others as it's not worth such a huge asset but keeping it in a hot wallet which might be vulnerable to hacker attacks when you experience its negligence.

It's just a lesson because it's impossible to get coins back, so in the future, be more careful.

Hope you don't get depressed.

In any case, the bastards are the hackers
If op were the holder of our coins, then the stolen funds of the would be returned back to the victim and wallets of these hackers would be immediately blocked

Sucks.
This really sucks
Wow that really sucks.
I completely agree with all of you. BTC - is irreversible sucks.

since the op has yet to clearly prove this loss
I think that op is worried about his privacy. Most likely he will not reveal his wallet address. I don’t see any other reasons why op gives out so little information

yeah I was being playful with you as I don’t think you created the thread to make your reversibility point.

Btc is not irreversible it is stated to be irreversible but it can be changed as yours was.

btc could also say all stale wallets with no withdrawals will be considered abandoned after fifty years.

A lot more can be done to fuck with it.

as for reversing txs when eth reversed the large hack it fucked up my eth wallet and dispite a lot of effort to rebuild and recover those coins are lost to me 2eth.

So if I lose two coins of your coin due to theft do I send you an email recover my coins.

how easy is recovery.

Btw reversibility sucks if you sell something and the buy lies to get a refund.

The OP has yet to provide a signed message from the supposed addresses that were hacked, and even if he does, it's still not 100% valid proof that the money was indeed stolen, as it can be a transaction conducted by himself. With that being said, I have my doubts regarding the validity of this story. Why would anyone have 11 Bitcoins on his Windows 11 laptop, which can be accessed by other people in their household? Anyone with such an amount of money would simply buy a hardware wallet for $100 or at least have isolated his wallet on a Linux OS.

I'm sorry, but it sounds like an episode on things that never happened. If I'm wrong, then I'm sorry for your loss; no one deserves it, even if they neglected their safety.

if that is a true story and the 11 btc are more than half  his btc he asked for it and he got it.

Sorry for the loss. But why have huge amount of coins on an online wallet? The safest wallets are offline/cold and multisig wallets. If you know you can not run your node with cold wallets or with multisig, do not have huge amount of coins on it.
This is such bad news.
Those who save their bitcoins in an online wallet is dancing tango with the devils. There is always a pains end to it. A thousand and one times it has been echoed that your best bet is to save your bitcoin in a multisignature or cold storage wallet.

I hope that it is not only you who have learned from this experience but others who are making the same mistake as you currently can learn and preventing the impending disaster.

Let's be honest - this is bad news. If this does happen to you – I assure you that no one here is happy about this other than the hacker. I don't know what caused your wallet to be hacked and I'm not sure how it happened although I have gone through each of your replies to gather some information.

Also - everyone here hopes you'll get your hacked bitcoins back - but that's very unlikely because only hackers can do that. Don't give up and rise up with whatever means you have now - we only learn from your mistakes. The only thing I regret about you is - you share a PC with other people where there are 11 btc stored in your online wallet. 11 btc is right now equivalent to $416,350 [$37,850 per btc] - of course this is a big amount to lose.

Talked to my wife.  She tried to install a voice changer software yesterday from a link on twitter and it didn't install.  This is a windows 11 PC.  I see something new called WingFtpServer as a startup program. That has to be it. C'est la vie  Embarrassed

Since you now know the reason behind the hack there is not much to do except correct the mistakes that led to that money being lost, probably the easiest way to solve this is to use a hardware wallet from now on as it is relatively inexpensive compared to the size of your assets, now another way to deal with this is to have a PC completely dedicated to storing your wallets and that is offline all the time, with a Linux OS installed instead of windows.

Do I believe in this story? Yes, because it's very likely to happen given that OP allows his wife to download and install whatever she wants. Giving access to the machine that stores your coins to anyone is a bad idea. Allowing them to download and install software is a bad idea times two. Not dividing a large amount like 11 BTC into 2 or 3 wallets is a bad idea times three.
Is this story true? Who knows. Maybe it's meant to scare people away from bitcoin? Maybe it's written in hope of getting attention from the media, since they like to write articles about such things. If it's true, you can get your own piece in the news one day. Just wait until your stolen money is worth a couple million $ and they'll call you for an interview. Cheesy

@OP I trust by now your pc must have been done with the upgrade for you to get the sign message done and share the wallet with members of the forum for further investigation.
If you have no clue how to do that, someone already post a link above for guidance. It will make your claim more genuine if we can all see the hacked wallet. You should also get in touch with your local authority for proper investigation. This is no small amount and I sympathise with you if this is the case.

Also, the coins have not moved from hacker address
And what are you waiting for? Tell us the hacker's btc address. And we will send feedback to all blockchain-explorers that this is the address of scammers. Explorers will mark it as a scam address. It will be difficult for hackers to withdraw btc

I don't care if the story is true or not but it is not a good endeavor to allow people to mess with our most important stuffs, if this story is clear that means the op might be so careless interns of making things right by giving everyone there parts by telling them what to do and what not to do.
If you are really the man of the house your wife will definitely give you the kind of respect you want, so I believe that if in at the first place you told your wife not to mess up with your PC or the device you used in signing the BTC wallet, your wife would have stay far from it.
Now you see why it is not good to keep things just anyhow, although I feel so sad for this because it not far for the next halving, your 11 BTC would have yield good returns for you.

Perhaps it's got something to do with you connecting your wallet over the internet. Mere logging in on sites and connecting wallets are already a recipe for disaster, and I'm guessing the attack had happened a while ago if not even years from before, just biding its time before striking. I wanna send out my condolences and all that stuff, since losing your money, let alone from a hacker is a massive gut punch. But don't beat yourself up to it bud, the one thing that you should always hold on to is your life and sanity. As long as you got these with you, you'd be able to get your 11 bitcoins back one way or another, trust me.

Couldn't be your wife since you told us she'd never know how to work her way into a bitcoin wallet anyway, but if you're sharing computers it could be something she clicked on the internet while she was surfing.

It is regrettable why the OP shared a PC with someone else even though it was his wife, while dangerous conditions never knew to come even though he had done a deeper inspection, then what is regrettable is that he did not buy hardware that is still priced at $100 even some are below that so if he keeps it there it will certainly be safer in a cold wallet.

After checking the txid provided by the OP there is still no movement in the hacker's wallet to other wallets, maybe the hacker kept it there first, but the funds will never return if it is in the hands of the hacker.

$416,350 is a huge amount, we will not be able to collect more than that (11BTC).
Stay strong and stay patient even though I know it will hurt even more, but it's true what others say make it a lesson including for myself so that I don't give access to my PC to anyone.

My PC is running back up right now. I'll post the signed message after it finishes and I figure out how to do it. If you feel you need to report this post, by all means, do what you feel need to do
If you don't know how to sign messages maybe this can help you.

Sorry to say but even if this person learn how to sign a message is the BTC coming back? Are you guys going to get his BTC back for him? Why are you forcing him to sign a message? So that you can believe that he is indeed the rightful owner? What is next after? Let us send his BTC back to him since he is the rightful owner?

OP, I am glad you learned your lesson, you don't have to keep longing this thread, you shared your pain and people don't still believe, leave the post and move on, new readers will learn something from it or also join the group of people that don't believe.

My advice for you now is to get a hardware wallet, it's not even up to $300 to get a solid one, Trezor, Onekey, Keystone, Tangem, D'cent, and so on, these wallets are badass, good for keeping large amount of crypto, now they are doing discount, black Friday's everywhere, act now to avoid future losses, take heart and be strong.

Because it's quite often for newer members to come up with such stories to attract attention and merit as well, in a desperate attempt to rank up. I don't know what to believe. I've read a whole lot of stories here, and a large number of them were fiction. I can't accept that someone who supposedly had 11 BTC, worth approximately half a million dollars, was that of a novice who did not have a hardware wallet, which barely costs $70, and kept his wallet on a shared Windows computer, not even a separate computer or OS for this purpose. I'm sorry, but it doesn't sound plausible.

BTC gigantic fees are ripping off. And I’m generally silent about transactions speed.
BTC is becoming not for the majority, but only for the very rich whales

In what world $1 or $2 are gigantic fees? Those who cannot afford to support Bitcoin with such a small fee should definitely think about it and maybe find an altcoin that does not have any fees - there is no need to talk about the security of such a blockchain, right?

I'm sorry to hear about your loss, but I would say that you shouldn't have kept such a large amount in a personal device that you and maybe others have access to. If I had 11 Bitcoins, which is more than $400k based on the current price of Bitcoin, I would spend some money and buy a hardware wallet and keep them in that instead just to make sure that my Bitcoins are more safe and secure from things like malware or keyloggers and any other stuff that can cause me the loss of my assets through the internet.

Though it might not be possible for you to get your money back now when it's gone, you should try and find out how it happened, and who knows, maybe someone around you has done it, someone whom you told about your Bitcoins and that they are stored in your personal computer and they got access to it somehow. The world is different these days, you can't trust anyone when it comes to finances.

Im so sorry for you bro. Like 11 btc can buy house and lot, can start business, and buy cars all at once. If I have 11 Bitcoin and I got hacked, I don't know what will happen to me, definitely lost myself. It is really hard to retrieve this even you reported it. You know how they play with the system, and I know you know that even if you report this, there's nothing you can do anymore.

Hoping for your fast recovery brother. Always remember that every bad things, there's always a better things to come.

11 BTC? Damn. That's a lot of money for people like me and I must say that you are handling this really, really well since losing that amount would most probably shake me to the core.

If you weren't using that amount actively for various purposes, I must say that it was pretty dumb of you to leave it in an online wallet as some of the posters above mentioned. All the best trying to recover your stash.

okay, how to send a report correctly? what should I write in the report?

It would be logical to write what you think the topic should be locked for - and you already wrote that in your post "OP is troll, no proofs, no signed messages". Although keep in mind that mods don't have to share your opinion and won't do anything.

P.S: Still no proofs, no signed messages from OP. I'm amazed at this, this ex-holder of such wealth does not know how to sign a message with Bitcoin

The fact that someone allegedly had 11 BTC does not mean that this person must know how to sign a message or that he has any broader knowledge about Bitcoin. I have personally seen a lot of people who bought BTC a long time ago and then found themselves in a situation where they did not know even the most basic things, and these were not trolls, but people who really had the BTC they were talking about. Possession of something and knowledge about it do not have to be related to each other.

You are absolutely right in this statement. But that doesn't mean my assumption is wrong.

And if you are finished, then I hope you don’t mind me expressing my vision of the situation in more detail?:

I believe that OP did not lose any bitcoins. I propose OP simply made up this sad story so that out of pity or solidarity they would pour him merits. He didn't succeed. I’m glad that the forum’s audience is getting smarter every year and is less and less susceptible to such provocations

I also do not exclude other theories, the proposal of Pmalek also makes sense:

Is such a free interpretation suitable for a report? I thought the report should be short. It turns out there is no single standard form for reports? Please do not evade away from newbie answers and provide at least a sample of a correct report

11 BTC?

That Bitcoin was hacked, it's not like he lost access to it, so I don't think there's a chance of him getting it back . But I seriously doubt that anyone who owns such a large amount of bitcoin would store it so carelessly.
Bitcoin has great value these days and people who own bitcoin know about it. So it would be unbelievable if someone said they stored those bitcoins on a computer that was constantly online and didn't take any precautions . OP provided the wallet address but I don't believe it until he signs the message to prove he really owns it like some people are asking.

Talked to my wife.  She tried to install a voice changer software yesterday from a link on twitter and it didn't install.  This is a windows 11 PC.  I see something new called WingFtpServer as a startup program. That has to be it. C'est la vie  Embarrassed
I think this is what initiated since your wife doesn't have computer knowledge about the do'"S and dont'S of crypto but the first mistake started from you for not using a hardware wallet or airgap computer to hold the Bitcoin.
With that being said, there is no connection between the server software and the voice changer your wife downloaded.

I also do not exclude other theories, the proposal of Pmalek also makes sense:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5475428.msg63217689#msg63217689
Quote
We have that maniac (fxsurfer, antikvark, whatever the name is) who returns every couple of months and creates a few threads bashing bitcoin, everyone argues with him, and then he disappears, only to come back again some day.

It would be logical to write what you think the topic should be locked for - and you already wrote that in your post "OP is troll, no proofs, no signed messages". Although keep in mind that mods don't have to share your opinion and won't do anything.
Is such a free interpretation suitable for a report? I thought the report should be short. It turns out there is no single standard form for reports? Please do not evade away from newbie answers and provide at least a sample of a correct report

I wonder signing a message is no more important then placing a fractional coin in the address then withdrawing it.

 it is more costly to more in 0.0001 and then pull out 0.0001 although he could set it to 1 sat per byte and would lock it up  at no cost to with draw it.

But I am thinking how did the money get pulled from a core wallet as described by him I am not so sure what was done to pull it.

He claims it was not launched so I am not sure how it could be taken if it is not launched.

other then the hacker had full control of the pc via remote like anydesk.

TX IDs of the four transactions that drained my wallet:

so sorry to hear about your loss man, it is indeed a very sad experience to loose your Bitcoin and that much of it must have cost you a fortune to acquire.

I can not tell how exactly this happened as I am not that tech inclined when it comes to analysing how a wallet got compromised uisng codes but I know that offline and hardware wallets have now become the safe heaven for holders. Just buy your coins and keep them safe in a hardware wallet and make sure to keep it safe. Holding coins online, sometimes, might not be entirely safe, especially if you consider holding for a  long time

Yesterday I lost 11 BTC from my Bitcoin Core 25.0 wallet.  The wallet wasn't open at the time.  I don't know how it happened. Lots of emotions right now.

I am feeling very sad for you. I always say that it is very bad idea to store your btc in PC because PC has very weak security against malware. I believe that your PC also targeted by malicious activity where Hackers get access to your phrase. This could be only reason of your loss after reading your full story.

Why I am saying PC is not safe? First of all we Install Window, or Linux from shop(most of time we purchase PC with built in Window). Shop member generally using crack windows which have built in drivers and other needful software. These windows download from Unofficial sites and the chances of malware is so high. Second whenever we install any software especially when crack or any app from unofficial app , These apps are also full if malware. sometimes app automatically installed with popup when we browsing when we have strong security against malware.

Sad to say that No one can return your BTC even Satoshi but I am sharing strategy for future which will prevent you from further loss

▪️ Download official window from office site and make bootable usb by own.
▪️Don't use old this hacked wallet more and also If you used any other btc or altcoins wallet kindly send funds to new wallet (Create with mobile)
▪️Don't install unofficial software. It will be better that you use two PC. One should be fully spare just for crypto transaction

I recently spoke in a post about the internet and bitcoin that are not compatible in terms of key storage, but in good time, you are alive.
Look at the contrast, you wrote in the title "I lost 11 btc", you should be grateful that you didn't say "I lost everything".
I lost my mother recently, I spent the little I had on her, but I think that's how life is, life teaches us good and bad things.
you just have to keep moving forward.

From a technical point of view, I don't understand why a hacker empties your transactions in fractions, usually it is a single movement to prevent you from moving the funds.

It does not agree with the usual procedure, which could indicate that the person who did it is someone with little knowledge, or someone close to you who wanted to take some and then greed motivated him to take it all because the transactions are hours apart.
Edit:
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt to not think this is trolling.

I am sorry to hear that brother.  I lost $10,000 back in March 2021, nowhere near 11 BTC, and it was very painful.  Sad  It's not like I was a wealthy person. Just a regular working programmer.

I have learnt a lot since then, and the best I can do is say goodbye to it and keep on and stay optimistic.  If you still have your home, your employment, or retirement or whatever you have, your wife, etc, then it's a good idea to focus on what you have, it helped me to move forward and lessened the shock of it.

Soon it will just be a bad memory and nothing more.

I understand why you are trying to say, but can you show me a similar thread that received merit because they lost their Bitcoin? This isn't a topic that looks like a merit fishing stuff, maybe I am wrong but sorry to say I won't dare merit this post at all, 11BTC is gone, what will merit do at this point? I feel sorry for whoever this person is but what does this have to do with merits? It solves nothing to this problem.

They must have done something wrong using the crypto wallet without them knowing, it can happen to anybody but there is no way this will fetch him merits, if he truly want merit he would have talk about ways to avoid the mistakes, things beginners need to do to avoid getting their Bitcoin wallet compromised?

There is no single tutorial or even advice, he merely shared his painful experience, with the way you think, imagine if this is real? Have you even consider to think it this way?

I am sorry for your loss, be it story or reality. But I want to ask you why you put 11 BTC in a careless wallet. 11BTC means huge amounts of money. Why don't you put a strong hardware wallet offline? People will learn from your loss but your loss will never be recovered. Your wife may not have done such a thing. You may have given your wallet seed phase somewhere.

That is why it is said that the cryptocurrency market is extremely risky. here you have to make a good choice as well as adopt the best ways to preserve it. It's great if someone can buy such a large number of bitcoins, but it's even better if they keep it safely. You have been careless in securing your bitcoins. First of all, you should not have kept all your bitcoins in one wallet rather it should have been divided. Apart from this, there are also very good hard wallets in the market right now where you can store your bitcoins. Online wallets always have more chances of hackers to attack.

I have a hard wallet, but I still don't keep all my assets in one wallet, instead I'm trying to buy another one, so that if one wallet is accidentally hacked, So there is no fear of all my assets being stolen. Similarly I don't keep my assets on any one exchange, but I keep my trading assets in different exchanges. However, we all realize and newbies must realize that hackers are always active in this market, and our small mistake can lead to a big loss for us.

Yesterday I lost 11 BTC from my Bitcoin Core 25.0 wallet.  The wallet wasn't open at the time.  I don't know how it happened. Lots of emotions right now.

It's sad to think even with 11 BTC holdings, OP didn't even think of buying a cold wallet to protect his investment. It's a huge amount of money, and shouldn't take it easy when it comes to security. I agree with you, this won't happen if he has a hardware wallet. His wife may not cause a hack if he at least think of the security of his holdings.

You are absolutely right in this statement. But that doesn't mean my assumption is wrong.

You, everyone else and I can only guess what is true and what is fiction in this thread, and until there is solid proof that the OP is telling the truth, no one is wrong.

Have you read the forum rules?

There is no point in going further off topic, and if you are interested in something more about how to use the "report to moderator" option, you can open a thread on that topic in the Beginners & Help board.

If we have 1k dollar BTC then we will think about buying a hardware wallet to give more security to that BTC. Because 1k dollar BTC is very valuable to me. Also I don't access anything like (airdrop join) with this wallet which I use to take weekly payments. In this case how did the OP keep 11 BTC and use that wallet carelessly. In this case I find it very difficult to accept.

I think we shouldn't make assumptions in this case.  OP still has not shown real proof that he owned 11 bitcoins to begin with, even though he said he would provide evidence.  The only parts of his story that have been confirmed are a couple blockchain transactions, but honestly those could mean anything - for all we know, he just found some random transactions on the blockchain and claimed they were hacks.

You can't sign a message without the private key, if it was that easy, a certain satoshiwannabe would have done it already instead of forging.
And signing a message is impossible without a working PC, when someone gets hacked, they won't simply back up their hard drive, instead they'd take out any private key and wipe the drive clean.

But these kinds of imaginary hacks happen from time to time, there was even a person claiming that someone took 100 k BTC without having a private key by only having a signature. These are very similar to certain satoshiwannabe wet dreams, they even have a scam coin where they can block and reverse any transactions at will.😉, to be honest it's a perfect cash cow, get hacked, reverse, rinse and repeat, and what we have a lot of, are idiots to buy such scams. So kind of a wet dream.

You're right; I might be a little harsher without it being necessary. After all, we're all innocent until proven guilty. To correct my statement, the majority of the threads I mentioned being created for attention from newbies were regarding lost Bitcoin that was supposedly bought in the early days. I can possibly find a few because I remember replying to some of them. I don't know if this incident is real or not; I'm hoping it's not, because losing 11 bitcoins is tough and a burden that isn't easy to carry, but still, it doesn't make too much sense. Any reasonable person would have gone ahead and taken steps to secure this kind of money.

I'm not judging if someone doesn't know how to sign a message either, as it's something that I haven't done myself either; however, something doesn't add to this story. Is it the way the bitcoins were lost, or is it because the OP might not be telling us something more vital to explain how it might have happened? I don't know. In the first two transaction IDs, the sender address (ending in -rxx0a) shows a total of 28 bitcoins received. I can't fathom that the OP was dealing with such great amounts of money and kept them unsecured on a shared computer. The other two feature another wallet with dusty amounts of BTC received in them.

~~~
Once I had $600 stolen from Jaxx, and at that time the whole Internet knew that this wallet was being hacked  easy, but I did not have this knowledge. It was a shame and now I wish you inner strength and peace of mind as you have lost quite a bit. Did you have an antivirus installed?
The licensed version of windows?
Maybe the wife installed some kind of program without a license? People who are poorly versed in computers often clog up the computer with bad applications.
According to his last message, he has access to the seed or private key, he just doesn't know how to sign with Segwit.
therefore he can do it with electrum.
Yesterday I lost 11 BTC from my Bitcoin Core 25.0 wallet.  The wallet wasn't open at the time.  I don't know how it happened. Lots of emotions right now.
I am sorry for your loss, be it story or reality. But I want to ask you why you put 11 BTC in a careless wallet. 11BTC means huge amounts of money. Why don't you put a strong hardware wallet offline? People will learn from your loss but your loss will never be recovered. Your wife may not have done such a thing. You may have given your wallet seed phase somewhere.
OP made a costly mistake by putting such an amount of Bitcoin in such a wallet and you are right that he should have got a good hardware wallet. But he didn't put his coin in a careless wallet, Bitcoin Core 25.0 wallet is a full-node wallet and is considered to be one of the safest wallets. Its ability to download and validate the entire Bitcoin blockchain makes it one of the most difficult wallets to attack. It is also an open-source wallet which means that everyone have access to see, make comment, or propose a change to the code.This fact has made members doubt the story and want him to sign a message.
But splitting his coins into different wallets would have been ideal if he was using a software wallet. If I were him I would have shared my coin into a different trusted wallet or better still buy a hardware wallet. It is far cheaper than losing such an amount. However, some persons might be scared of ordering a hardware wallet because of the high rate of criminal activities. People are afraid of ordering fake wallets or compromised wallets. Even if they order from the right source, delivery services in some countries cannot be trusted. In a country where cybercrime is high some delivery service staff can change the wallet or compromise the hardware wallet to steal the coin. Using an air-gapped wallet could also be a sound option..
It's sad to think even with 11 BTC holdings, OP didn't even think of buying a cold wallet to protect his investment. It's a huge amount of money, and shouldn't take it easy when it comes to security. I agree with you, this won't happen if he has a hardware wallet. His wife may not cause a hack if he at least think of the security of his holdings.
I think we shouldn't make assumptions in this case.  OP still has not shown real proof that he owned 11 bitcoins to begin with, even though he said he would provide evidence.  The only parts of his story that have been confirmed are a couple blockchain transactions, but honestly those could mean anything - for all we know, he just found some random transactions on the blockchain and claimed they were hacks.
I'm also skeptical about the OP's story. Put yourself in his shoes, if you had 11BTC, would you leave it on a computer with an internet connection and let everyone use it freely? I bet no one here would let that happen even to a newbie, let alone someone who has been involved and has long experience like the OP.
In case someone owns 11BTC, I think they would even store it on 2 to 3 hardware wallets instead of on one computer with an online connection. OP should provide more evidence instead of just providing the wallet address and nothing to prove that he actually owns the wallet.
If we have 1k dollar BTC then we will think about buying a hardware wallet to give more security to that BTC.
There is nothing such as '1k dollar BTC', these are two different currencies that you have just sandwiched together, you should rather say you have 0.027 BTC or $1k worth of BTC.
But he didn't put his coin in a careless wallet, Bitcoin Core 25.0 wallet is a full-node wallet and is considered to be one of the safest wallets.
BTC core is only a safe wallet when it is run in an airgapped device, just because it is a full-node wallet does not mean it is safe by default, if you run BTC core in an online machine and in an unsafe enviroment, your funds are prone to hacking.
Its ability to download and validate the entire Bitcoin blockchain makes it one of the most difficult wallets to attack.
This is not true. BTC core is a full node wallet and you can download the blockchain and verify everything locally, this protects your privacy and also protects you from connecting to malicious third party nodes, but it does not secure your funds from hackers or malware or from every form of online attack if you use it in an online machine and in an unsafe enviroment.
One final post, then I'm just going to look forward and leave this mess behind.  Some points.
1. I'm an idiot.  I accept that. I hope sharing this experience can help others avoid the same mistakes that I made.
2. I can't figure out the message signing with the segwit address.  Wish that worked with the Bitcoin Core GUI wallet. Tried Electrum, but had no luck.  Not something I need to waste time with at this point.  If there is a mod or a trusted member of the forum willing, I'd be fine with sending some sats to them from my wallet. Send me a private message.  As others have said, that still doesn't prove anything, so whatever.
3. I joined this forum about 10 years ago.  I don't visit very often these days.  Merit points or whatever mean nothing to me.  Give me negative merits, just does not matter.
4. I have reported this theft to my local police as well as filed a cyber incident report with my state and the FBI.  I don't expect anything from that outside of being a statistical data point.
5. I know exactly where this malware came from that got us.  Website, file name, time, etc.
6. I contacted one of those recover your Bitcoin bounty hunters, but it's a scam.  I figured as much, but wanted to hear what they were going to say. The BS they were spouting was kind of funny.
7. I still love Bitcoin, my wife and my life. While this really sucks, it's not the end of the world for us.
Peace and love, yours truly, soulcity
So your address still holds some fund? Since you can send a few sat, correct? Well I don't think there are any stupid "hackers" out there to leave anything behind., and you don't need to sign with segwit, since your public key is known, you could import your private key as legacy and sign the message.  But I guess it's life right? Acting so cool like it was a few cents. Good actor.😉
Unless OP is an attention seeker and there was no hack Wink
As they say in the bitcoin space, don't trust, verify.
If this story is real it's because OP was completely careless about his coins.
You can be careful, average or careless here and a careful person would have a hardware wallet or a multisig setup. Your average holder would have an offline device with at least one backup and an antivirus software. A careless person would have a desktop wallet with a password in a txt file, would hold the private key in a password manager and allow all his family to use the computer for movies, pirated software and all the other stuff they do.
Op's story also makes me think that, to be honest, 11 bitcoins is no longer considered a joke; it's a huge amount if I calculate it at the price it has right now.
If I ever have bitcoin, I will definitely split it into different hardware wallets. And I will hide the seed phrase in the variety of flash drives. But putting it in storage that is not really safe but that you thought was safe is a big mistake. And I can't even tell if you're telling the truth in your story, though my TXID record was shown to you.
But even so, you should have put your bitcoins in different non-custodial wallets so that at least if there is a problem with the wallets, there are other bitcoins hidden, so I am saddened by the loss of them to you. Maybe you should be careful next time, dude.
6. I contacted one of those recover your Bitcoin bounty hunters, but it's a scam.  I figured as much, but wanted to hear what they were going to say. The BS they were spouting was kind of funny.
7. I still love Bitcoin, my wife and my life. While this really sucks, it's not the end of the world for us.
Peace and love, yours truly, soulcity
And this test transaction was the bottom of the address to send to you? But where is the evidence of actual hack or if it was actually a hack at all? Maybe someone took the coins having access to the PC, before the authorities figure out what exactly happened, coming here and saying his wallet was hacked is just wrong, how do we know the truth? So talking and speculating about it is not constructive.
If you have not installed that voice changer software, the hacker
he said he never enter password after this wife-install. so this all is somewhat strange. without password if hackers drag your comp to their den they'll get nothing still.
I always suggest using or at least reading the glacier protocol https://glacierprotocol.org/ guide to set up a "state of the art" cold wallet. and to understand all security implications.
I recommend OP (but I'm sure he knows) to avoid any service that talks about "recovering stolen bitcoins" or similar things. These are only scam and will drain other value Sad
At most, rely on some service to "track" these coins...
Really? From the Glacier website: "For most people, most of the time, the authors recommend storing Bitcoin using a high-quality online storage service....Some popular options are Blockchain, Coinbase, Gemini, and Kraken."
thanks for pointing it out to me. as advice it is certainly questionable no more to add. agree with you.
I didn't mean to suggest something like that (even though, most of us who have entered this world, probably started via an exchange without major security settings)...
I want recommend glacier protocol for the inputs it provides in the setup of a cold wallet.
Very sorry to know that your wallet has been hacked. And you lost 11 bitcoins. That's a big loss in someone eye but you do not care. Be careful in future. Better to use a hardware wallet. And keep your computer free from viruses, worms and Trojan horses etc. So that hackers and evil geniuses can't hack your computer.
And as far as your personality is concerned, it seems that you are very courageous and possess strong nerves. And small problems and worries can't spoil you. And you have bravely resumed your work. It's a very good thing.
This is definitely a big loss, if I had that much bitcoins, I would have it stored on an online and a personal wallet, this; I believe the number one mistake op made, 11 bitcoins is not a small amount of money, and even if you don't have money anymore, you could sold a tiny portion of it and buy yourself a good hardware wallet which you could use as a cold storage for the remaining number of bitcoin.
Well, this I believe is what we always have been saying that decentralization comes at with a prize, a sacrifice..
Many of us profess and confess that we agree and are ready for a decentralized society, meanwhile, our actions and inactions does not show that indeed, we are ready for a complete decentralized society.
Sorry op, for your loss.
This is what makes me doubt the OP's story. How could someone with such a large fortune be so careless that it was unacceptable? I bet that if it were me or anyone on this forum who owned that amount of bitcoin, we would definitely buy ourselves 1 to 3 hardware wallets to store bitcoin. No one would be stupid and careless enough to store it on a computer with a regular internet connection like the OP is saying.
We're talking about 11 bitcoins and each 1 bitcoin is worth almost $39k, so I'm really sorry OP because I can't believe your story.
We need more information to be able to piece together what happened.
The Bitcoin Core was running on what OS?
What were you doing around the time of the theft?
Bitcoin Core wallets are protected by a password, they don't use seed phrase technology but rely on some "hdseed" that's similar but will not be encrypted without a password. Therefore if the wallet file is stolen, it can be brute-forced for weak passwords.
Well, the hacker obviously got hold of the password... to be able to do that. Did you leave your computer running for extended times without watching it? (They could have installed keyboard logging tools and waited for you to leave the room and then logged in and transferred the funds)  Huh
The bulk of my "treasure" are stored off-line so I know that it will not be accessible .....and it is split into smaller amounts, so even if someone hack me, they will only get access to say 1% of my coins.
I also put out "bait" in the form of small amounts of coins in desktop wallets ...so if that is triggered, then I know I am being targeted.
Sorry for your loss.  Sad Sad Sad
Very very smart. Having multiple cold wallets on different technologies is very smart. Additionally I only use a dedicated device to manage my monies with. It has or does nothing else, ever.
The honeypot idea is great.
As for the OP's situation, I understand the frustration and loss associated with losing a significant amount of Bitcoin. It's important to acknowledge these emotions and allow time for healing. However, it's also important to accept the possibility that the lost Bitcoins may never be recovered.
In the meantime, the OP should focus on preventive measures to safeguard their remaining cryptocurrency assets. Investing in a hardware wallet, practicing good cybersecurity habits, and maintaining backups are crucial steps to protect against future losses.
While the situation is unfortunate, it serves as a reminder to all cryptocurrency holders to prioritize security and take proactive measures to protect their digital assets.
