Eventually when I get more merit I think I will be much more selective in how I distribute it this next time only giving one at a time I think.

Well I'd give you some merit but I simply cannot! That's a grand idea chap! Why do people become merit sources again? What is the benefit of this and why is it important? I have certainly heard about this and seen it some places but never knew why....

BPIP uses merit received to rank the most recognized users.   People have obsessed over that ranking, resorting to many feuds you see today.

If you are a merit source, you are more likely to receive merit.   Both as a thank you / reciprocation, and as a gift for future merit favor.   The potential for abuse is high and merit sources are not published.    If a person is identified as a merit source, they should expect favorable treatment from forum members.

Well, the best solution to the problem is to write some posts that people find useful, informative, thought-provoking, or at the very least, funny.

I find myself giving a lot of merits to Legendaries - which is in a way kind of pointless, other than helping them to refill their sMerit stash if they aren't sources - but there's some truth behind the idea that the reason why they're Legendary is because they write good posts. Of course this isn't always the case, especially when it comes to bought accounts or accounts that were dormant during most of the time since the merit system has been introduced.

Actually you've inspired me to keep an extra eye out for non-Legendaries who write good posts and are often overlooked.

Like you, I feel that there is no point in keeping on to our sMerit, it will do no good to myself.If we have sMerit and we send merit to others in a good and informative post, it may benefit.
I want to help people but I don't have enough.But sometimes I try my best to help people.Whenever I have a sMerit I try and give others informative posts.

Trying to get into the good book of others by showing your good intention and willingness to help others, or how you intend to help other in public will surely leads to abuse of that good will intention and the merits by merits hunters.

Said, there is no point in coming out openly to declares your merits scarcity rather it more acceptable to contribute your quarter to forum discussions that will help other forum member that way, tou earn some merits and you can help from there silently without needing to make a public announcement about that, because doing otherwise as a none merits source could become the sure and fastest way to end in some members ignore list because members of the forum are highly skeptical in dealing with issues of pronounced or proclaimed trust good will and intention promises, rather we respect good actions, steps and approach to things and also just as you @tread93 is not a merits source, it will be hard  to be able to render that level of merits help you desire to others, unless you become a merits source some days, but for now, that desired will suffer a lot of frustration unless he makes an application to become a merits source in the future that way he can be as generous like

Not everyone thinks like you do, bruh. Each individual has his reason for giving merits to a post and while some would question the motive behind @phillipma's generosity towards you, I feel he has a better reason to. So you may regard hoarding of merits as pointless, but the next person knows why they are doing it and since this merits don't really 'decay'(at least not that I know of) why not keep it till it's 'ripe' for usage, right?

 Then again, just as other have pointed, it's not always cool to publish your merit 'good deeds' because it may come off as more merit fishing to the next person and even though your motive was actually far from that, for me it would be best to keep your deeds out of public view and rather let your works speak for you.

In the last 120 days, you sent 7 merit at once to a user which was the furthest in date. You sent 2 merits differently to 2 users. And you sent 1 merits differently to 11 users. I think you are selective already.

The chance that he would be given merit source is not high. He is not saying he wants to become a merit source. But he can apply if he wants. Just that theymos is not selecting any merit source from people that have been applying since 2021.

I agree but I don't see OP to be implying that stuff, probably bragging about giving away all the sMerits he's got and that placing himself as an important person because if you got graced by his sMerits that you deserve it. I don't think that it's going to be a good idea to put ignore on OP though, if OP can generate that much merit and share those to other users, then OP's probably worth looking out in terms of the content that OP posts.

Your post, OP, brought a sincere smile to my face. I also don’t like accumulating merit, but I also don’t think that you need to rummage through posts to give them to someone. People receiving merit here on the forum are really happy about each one; this is in some way a motivation for further running.
But you, OP, registered a day before me, and this is quite a long time. I won’t tell you a secret, but I’m sure you can guess where you can find new merits . It is not at all necessary to show us your stock.

Congratulations, I can see that sMerits have been given to you, use it wisely this time. But you shouldn't be stricter in giving it out as your "much more selective" is scary on its own. Just be natural about this and continue to give to those who are deserving of it until it finishes again. Then look away when you've exhausted it as you are not at fault and there's nothing bad in that.

This is good advice, people should not hold it unnecessarily, especially when they see people who deserve it. It's also not what the forum wants, but you see, we have different ways of gauging things and we can't hand merits out the same way. There are times I would be looking for those to bless with merits but I would not see either, above all, you are right, we should not be sentimental about this as it would amount to a waste eventually if not spent.

The fact that you don't have sMerits should be exclusively your problem, which you can solve by creating better content that others will reward with merits, or publicly show interest in becoming a merit source.

For those who give merits for such topics or posts, I have only one question - do you think it is right to encourage members to ask for merits in this way? Not that I'm going to get into what you're going to do with your sMerits, but there are hundreds of quality posts that fly under the radar (accidentally or on purpose).

I still have smerit but I’m trying my best to distribute them on thread which I visit often but since I’m not a merit source then I have no obligation to distribute them ASAP since the merit decay is not at play anymore.

Just apply for merit source if you have the time to browse bunch of thread in daily basis to distribute merit. It’s not hoarding if you don’t distribute your smerit yet just because you don’t see any post that deserves merit the time when you are browsing the forum.

You don't need to be selective because smerits are meant to be given to the ones who make good posts and good posters. I also have only 1 smerit left which I'll surely send to a good post. I know that after that I won't have anymore smerits that I can send to good posts and posters but when a good merit source or some members send me smerits then I will have more smerits that I will send to help the posts or posters that deserve those smerits.
