I was going through the social media and came across this news about the Economic and Financial Crime Commission Chairman, Olukoyede saying that 7 out of 10 Nigerian students are involved in cyber crime. This is not something to be proud of because it means that 70% of Nigerian students are into cyber crime which I think it is not true entirely when deeper analysis is done about it.

We know that the rate of cyber crime within Nigerians and especially student is increasing but I don’t think it has gotten to that level that he said already. We know this moment are hard times and the economy is not friendly to everyone. Settling for cyber fraud shouldn’t be the last resort for any Nigerian. How can this be averted in the country and what are the possible solutions to stop students from involving in such criminal activities.

Sadly, people placed in government positions to protect the image of the country are the ones managing it, because we have come to an era whereby if you are a young man & yet has plenty money, you are automatically tagged a "Yahoo boy" whereas if it is ladies, you are tagged "Runs Girl", forgetting the fact that this our 21st century, we have got many opportunities online where anybody can easily make a living without actually living the comfort of his home (i.e Youtubing, forex trading, affiliate marketing and likewise we Bitcointalkers e.t.c), of which only if you could go deeper, you will notice that over 60% of the people tagged "Yahoo boyz" are genuinely earning their money online.

there was a time I shifted all the blames regarding the high rate of cyber crime in the country to the government, but after critically looking at the mindset and lifestyle of these youth that have so much involved themselves in this criminal minded act, I just have to agree that most of these guys have a serious marred thought process that needs rehabilitation.

You have a serious where an average youth is not even ready to start small. Everyone wants to drive big cars and live expensive lifestyle without looking for ways to acquiring that wealth legitimately.

What amazes me most about this guys that are involved in cyber crime is that they spend a good quality of time trying to brainwash the victim into falling prey for them but will not be reasonable enough to know that if they had out in that same energy into quality business or skill, within some years to come, they will become extremely good at the chosen field.

The government and parents also have obvious role to play in contributing or reducing the high rate of cyber criminals we have in a society. If a parent give the adequate training a child needs right from a tender age, he will grow to becoming a responsible adult or youth.

Another issue is that most parents just throw their children off into the higher institution without meeting up with the financial demands that comes with it, as a student you can do much work that isn't done remotely and I situation where you find people around you doing it, it's very common that you will join them in the act.

The 70% statistic is very accurate because while I was in school a hiluge number of my course mate where directly or indirectly involved in this cyber crime.

The same taught here mate. When I actually saw this news I was really amazed that the government can really come out to spit such rubbish on the air. They really believe that any young made Nigerian is into yahoo or fraud that is really bad for them. If seen a lot of Nigerian youth who are into businesses making it big on a daily basics. They neither depend on the government nor fraud and these youths are able to take good care of their family giving them a good life. So why would they be so fats forward to conclude that all Nigerian students are into fraud. Over there in the university, students struggle to pay their fees, buy material and survive without the government empowering anyone.

There are many opportunity that students engage themselves with. Yahoo isn't the only thing students are into. Im not saying students don't do it but majority of them are into content creation, coding, cryptocurrency and lot of others. Well I'm really ashamed of the Nigeria government. they should wise up and think of better ways to solve the problems in the country, rather than pointing fingers and accusing the youths for their failures. If they had provided jobs for the youths, maybe there won't be much of the fraud we hear of today.

What do you expect when we are in a country that the government don't have any plans for graduates. The truth is that most undergraduate their greatest fear is how will life going to be after school.  We are know in most home when one graduates from the university parents don't have anything to do with you when it comes to financial support expecially for the men. I'm not supporting young people who are into fraud, but the truth is that when a government is not doing well their is no miracle that people won't go ìnto crimes, bad government influences the youth to go into crime.

He is a bloody liar. How did he get to the conclusion? How did he carry out his research. I hate these people. Why didn't he say 7 out of 10 Nigerian politicians are thieves. These people will burst into the rooms and hostels of university students with laptops who are learning tech or any other skill using a laptop and then label them fraudsters. In fact, if you are a Nigerian youth with a laptop and have dreads with tattoos, you are already labelled a cyber criminal.

I don't know about you but the number of Nigerian youths that are not into internet fraud are more than those who are engaged in cyber crime. EFCC are the loudest when it comes to the youths but when it comes to the real thieves that are destroying the country, they have no power. The former minister of Aviation that rented an aircraft from Ethiopia to act as Nigeria Air after collecting huge sum of money is walking free. They have no power to arrest him. I hate these people.

I no go fit ague too much for that statistics wey dem give, because the rate of yahoo boys for this country don too much,  70% is either accurate or very close to accurate. Now a days youth, dem dey clam say na dem dey pay their school fee and na so dem dey do illegal things to take get money. But even if that statistics dey correct, my own question na, how dem wan use take stop am since dem don know say student wey dey do cyber crime many, abi them go go schools dey go arrest all the students? Even if dem go try to use their dressing take identify the bad boy, no be every body wey dey dress indecent naim be yahoo boy oo, some persons just like to dey dress like that , because dressing na fashion and na wattin you like you go carry you money buy, though most time e dey put us for trouble like for this scenario.

the country has been struggling for so long and now that they have discovered they can make money from the internet, they gotta take the opportunity. but you gotta believe they are getting smart though. if you notice in sports, Nigerians are one of the top athletes which means cybercrime is not their last resort, they can do better if there are just opportunities.

have you heard of a scam where one Nigerian sold a fake Airport? this has got to be one of the greatest scams.  can't help but amazed by how they come up with that.

The issue with Nigerians is just something else, if you like leave fraud start doing social media influencer na wayward life them go call you, people will always critize and there's no need paying attention, no be say Internet fraud na good thing oh but na Nigerians life be this always finding fault in someone else problem.
Okay even if 70% of boys dey into cyber crime that's their own business even if the 70% turn to thief today na the country go suffer am, when I see people like this sometimes they actually want a good job or an office work that's more better but where's the office work?
Instead of them to find a way to stop the issue with cyber crime in Nigeria they're busy complaining and they expect those fraudsters to stop if they stop who will pay their bills.
With the hard economy right now everyone is looking for a way to survive and na this season ritualist dey full so it's best to be careful this season, even local online  scammers will not stop so there's no need complaining

We all know how the young once are getting their selfs into shady things but the variation is not actually accurate because most the nigeria youth have discovered several ways to help their self in different areas talk about crypto, forex, and tech and even in content creation by all means the youth are trying their best in the improvement. And that is why in several occasions the EFCC is mistaking some people for fraud just because of the money they are getting but once you clean and they don't have anything against you then they will let you go and if the government can even encourage people then the attention of people will go to were they are making money at tech and others need to be encouraged. And that is just the way they can easily fight against fraud.

Did he want to say that his children are also included in the cyber crime. It's a shame on him and his office to disgrace Nigeria that way because the world is watching and whatever they say will affect every other Nigerians outside and inside the country.
He can't come out and say such a myopic statement without evidence, because with such he means that in every department of 100 students, 70 of them are into fraud and the rest of the 30 students might, that is a daft statistics. He is just a new employed boy that is trying to impress his people and nothing more, government of the people by the people and for the people in the government, always blaming people for their own failures when they cannot create jobs for graduates.

The EFCC can twist what they have in their mouth but I know the pristineness of Nigerian student hasn't been damage to this level. I think the economy and financial commission need to channel that energy into politicians that we have in the country because from my own statistics, I think 10/10 politicians in this country are into crimes but this one is economic corruption by eating public funds, is there a crime that is bigger than eating tax payers money? They wouldn't address those problems because they know that they will remove if they are not loyal to their masters, but students are their problems. Shame on EFCC.

Yahoo boys dey among people wey spoil reputation of dis country for outside, anybody wey just see say na from Nigeria you come, automatically they go think say na yahoo boy u be, and the rate at which fraud is increasing in this country, I no even sabi anything wey we fit do to reduce am because I know it can’t be stopped. Even secondary school children now they do yahoo which is very painful. Higher percentage of youths in higher institutions are now into fraud, they believe that’s where they can easily make money, and they are employing themselves since the government is not ready to employ them, but e no make sense, I know say things hard for d country now, but their is no excuse for involving yourself in fraud.

OP I totally disagree with the Cyber crime resort in every nation have people who commit such the problem with our government is that they don't have good days base some information most sector or ministry feshoit today is just for recognition by who gave them the appointment majority of our leaders never know that the world have gone globally where youth can work at home without been in a public office and make genuine money that have no crime attached taken for instance those of our senior member in this platform some with dedication can feed squarely but an illetrate or ignorant neighbor can tag him or her fruadster just because he work indoor with smart phone or laptop many youth today are into forest trade as the knowledge of trade has gone viral and they are making genuine money and so many online marketing and trading and advertisement that fetched money without being in public office which most of our leaders tag cyber crime due to in ability to have sense of details and carryout good investigation I have see some sector our leaders duplicate what they hard without research and change heading to remain relevant as working sector even in our media today carry fake news some they are even been force by our leader to victimized the youth as the repead growth in finance is increasing because it could be a treat to them they just want the citizens to remain slave so anything they said can be easily follow without objection because this I debunked that majority of our youth are into such.

That is a lie, i don't believe in this statistics, i cannot dispute the fact that people are involved in illicit activities but on this aspect of percentage, you can't run it to be 7 out of 10 instead i will go with 3 out of 10 are involved in cyber crime, not all the 3 people were also as chronic and heartless as that, many are just curious about finding a legitimate means of earnings from the digital networks.

This is not something to be proud of because it means that 70% of Nigerian students are into cyber crime which I think it is not true entirely when deeper analysis is done about it.

Maybe you google it on the internet the countries with the highest rate of cyber crime, you're liable to discover as many as possible, there's nothing to proof this, you can't believe whatever you see on the internet, there are countries more worst than Nigeria.

OP, I am shocked to have read this post now and what baffles me the most is the percentage of young people, especially the students who are involved in the cyber crime activities. For the EFCC chairman to have highlighted that 7 out of 10 Nigerian students are involved in cyber related crimes is a figure that should ordinarily hurt any well meaning young Nigerian. These are not small percentages and I don't think the numbers are looking at decreasing anytime.

I can tell that the reason why many students are involved in this cyber crimes boils down to the economic crisis currently experienced by the country. Families are falling into economic issues everyday and only a few are coming out of poverty. Over 30% of our population is gone below the poverty line and the poverty rate has only been increaseing by the year. Last year, it was calculated at over 80-90 million people.

Could it also be that the government is encouraging these young people by not encouraging them to learn digital skills as an alternative to the over bloated government jobs. In this regard, I will advise the government to concentrate more on the digital skills across the 36 states of Nigeria to bolster their productivity and reduce these crime rates. These skills should be infused in our educational curriculum from start.

cybercrime is everywhere across all the country we cannot say that sabbat crying started from Nigeria or Nigeria is the highest people who cybercrime activities are illegality so what is happening here is that we can blame ourselves without finding a cogent reasons, because of the way we do things in Nigeria that is why we have to blend ourselves concerning us about activities or illegalities have been into it since but nobody hear them out, many developed countries has been into cyber crime

Before the Man came out to make such statement publicly, they must have made adequate research. The rate at which Nigerian students not just students but the Youths are involved in cyber crime is really alarming. But it will be very good for him to brief the president about how bad the situation is in the country, so that drastic measures will be put in place to reduce this high trend in cyber crime in the country. It's not enough to make statistics and releasing figures. You have to do something to engage those youths in something meaningful that will make them stop the act of fraud. You can't tell someone to stop what is giving him/her food when there is nothing on ground for the person to keep surving on when he/she drops the act you frown at.

Nigerian that is involve in cyber crime they learnt it from another country and that is why we don't need to blame them that much, what we are suppose to be saying right now is to know how we can advice our people to stop fraudulent act, but not by using efcc to arrest them and after everything the efcc officers will still encouraging to continue so that they can enriched themselves..the thing is that Nigerian youths is giving our country bad name which not supposed, and every one outside the country may be thinking that we maybe all Nigerian youths are scam

In the case of Nigerians youths who gets involved with cyber crimes the 70% per cent analysis by the EFCC is quiet correct because from my knowledge about this case efcc has over 50 professors who are analysts and economists that knows how to make good assumptions. when they say 70% they are absolutely correct.

I'm not always interested in news about the rate of cyber crime in this country because they left them no option when the youth role models a fraudster what do you expect his follows to do. infact the country as a whole is into fraud but in diverse ways. just because yours isn't casted doesn't mean you are not included. politicians are even involved with this cyber crime, for those of you who live in port Harcourt I know a politician who has a HK around egbelu axis so this cyber crime is so broad that I don't blame the youths but they too are accountable for there actions.
