I bought a Avalon Nano 3 without the PSU, there wasn't an option on the indego site to purchase it with a PSU at the time. But I am having trouble sourcing a PSU for it, initially I bought a Lenovo LEGION what I thought was a 170W USB-C wall charger but realized 1. The sellers who said it was 170w lied and its a 135w, and two the pictures show it with a USB-C to USB-C cable but it came witha USB-C to Lenovo yellow connector power cable. Yes when I try it with my Samsung laptop USB-C to USB-C cable or my Samsung S24 Ultra cable (the cable I use) the Avalon tells me the PSU is not supported.

I have ordered a couple of cheap options off Amazon to try later today, including a connector that converts the Lenovo yellow connector to a USB-C just case in case the cables I have are the problem.

I would like to see those who have purchased a PSU outside of Conaan Avalon what worked for you.

Thanks,

i think the 0.15 cents refers to what the nano 3 earns per day.

i would like power stats too.

dell makes a good psu that will do the top speed.

but after testing and running my two I run at middle speed.

https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-165w-usb-c-gan-ac-adapter/apd/450-bbwr/pc-accessories

the dell above is costly.

you can find it on amazon just a bit cheaper.

https://www.amazon.com/Laptop-Charger-Adapter-Precision-5-893A/dp/B0CL2LL47R/ref=sr_1_9?

I can not seem to find anything better than the dell.

About 139 watts at the kwatt meter on high speed.

There is probably a backdoor in the firmware. An attacker can change the custom root password (no, it's not root in my case, it's a complex one) or there is a manufacturer password.  Stay behind your firewall and do not open any ports to the outside.

Furthermore, the current firmware file 2024032701_110811(Download at Canaan offical) https://www.canaan.io/tmp/file/heaternano3slaverk2102024032701110811-61ee.zip does not make any visible changes and worse, does not change the firmware version in the API or the web backend.

http://<yourIP>/get_home.cgi

API data can be accessed without a password. For example, the Wifi SSID, the mining address, firmware, temperature, pool and so on.
My pool address changed several times. Always directed to https://web.public-pool.io/#/ with changing receiving addresses, but with my own worker name (after the .)

Be careful.

However, one thing is quite funny: the hacker or bot relies on solo mining. Not a good source of income.  Grin

Same applies to the API http://<yourIP>/updatecglog.cgi. You don't need a password to call it. Password seems to be only needed on the main page.
The above API is the output of the LOG-page from the Avalon Nano UI. Unfortunately it is not valid JSON.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/256528960150  i bought from here

That's a good deal. I bought a Lenovo Thinkpad PSU from Amazon, a 240w and I bought a converter from their yellow plug to a USB-C, the problem is the converter only allows for 100w to go through it and the Nano would only do low, not medium or high.

I checked Red Panda's videos on YT and saw the power supply he was using, yeap they are still on Amazon but I found one better which I mining with using the 240w usb-c cable that he recommends.

My Nano is doing 4.13 RTHR/4.01 Ave-HR @ 44c (t) / 90c (h0) temps, using 125w of power using the amazon power supply that is similar looking to Red Panda's, it says its supposed to be a 140w PSU.

I have a question about the Avalon app.

I set my Nano 3 up on my WiFi network using the app but for whatever reason the Nano 3 didn't bind into the Avalon app, so when I open the app now is shows zero Avalon Nano 3's. Is there anyway to add after the fact without having to do a factor reset? I just don't want to stop mining and or cause any problems.

I am not sure why the app would update the WiFi info on my Nano 3 and then decide not to bind the Nano 3 to it.

I am using a Samsung S24 Ultra with the latest updates.

Thanks,

There is an option in the app where you can add your Avalon Nano 3 with its IP. If you go to "My Avalon devices" and press the "+" there is an option above the button called "Add equipment in operation?".

Check on Willi's pool https://solorun.lima.zone/, there are several Avalon Nano 3 where you can compare. You will see that it is not unusual.

if you think you can do better there are many open sources that you can improve on and where you could make your contribution.

that would be a worthwhile suggestion if my 25 year contribution wasn't already out there.

as for Canaan's shipments, we just have to compliment them on the excellent logistical work they are doing with thousands of orders in a short time!

you may compliment them if you like. i found the 22 email "updates" each containing excuses like "we were on holiday" or "we will do better this week", not to be compliment worthy. for me, they fell more into the underwhelming category. i'll save my compliments for people who keep or exceed the promises they make. companies that already have a successful manufacturing and distribution network, but choose to launch a new product on a crowdfunding platform where late delivery excuses are the norm, are not in a category that warrants compliments from me.

  • the shipping logistics are sub-par.
  • shipping devices that all have the same factory root password in 2024 is lazy at best, willfully negligent is more likely.
  • a "factory reset" that does not reset the pool configuration is sub-par.
  • the firmware's tendency to change or corrupt the root password frequently, is unacceptably sub-par. i've had both of mine for a week. their credentials have each become corrupted 3 times in that short timespan. that's just pathetic.
  • when i buy a device that has an ssh server set up and running on it from the very first boot, i want to have access to the credentials that ssh server accepts and i want to be able to lock people who are not me, out of that device which i own and which runs on my network. i don't want unknown persons to retain valid credentials for that device. nano 3s are shipped with a running ssh server whose credentials are not provided in the device documentation. there is no conceivable explanation for this arrangement that puts canaan in a positive light

i have no praise for anyone who delivers sub-par, but as i said, anyone can compliment them if they're happy to spend their money on sub-par.

i think deliberate mischief on canaan's part is unlikely. my own experience of these devices is that a higher than acceptable amount of stupidity went into their production. i agree with hanlon. they're not malicious, they're stupid.

well, i think this might be currently being abused. my units was hashing for months just fine. i have it at a cousins house. it went down 3 days ago, but i was traveling and wasn't able to get to it quickly. i had them power cycle it to see if that fixed it but it didn't do anything. finally was able to check on it today and the miner had completely different pool credentials.

LTC:LRpX79sC9o8DVRoDX5PUtKY65pw6VZ8LeS.av6
stratum+tcp://sha256.unmineable.com:3333

i would never mine litecoin and never used unmineable. it seems like they have 130 TH/s of SHA256 hash online and get paid out in LTC. not sure if that's 2 individual "regular" mining rigs that are hacked or if there's a 30-80 hacked nano 3's out there & the hash is being grouped together.

the worker name on my unit was change to "av6". the one's on the unmineable page are av1 and av4

i had always kept the default password as root/root. but when i tried logging in via the IP address, it did not work. i was able to change the pool info in the app but could not get access via the IP to reset the password. so I did a factory reset & also changed the default password.

I had to factory reset it twice, after one of the factory resets, the credentials somehow went back to the LTC address above & mineable pool, despite me entering my pool info to braiins. above after i tried changing the password. at first i thought maybe it was some sort of bot but after reading the posts, maybe it could have 'retained' the bad pool info & re-corrupted the password.

in any case, this is wild stuff. if you have this rig, you should definitely check your miners & we need to make this a bigger deal to canaan.

It looks like your device was accessible from the outside via the Internet and someone reconfigured your miner. So keep in mind, do not activate portforwarding or any other things, that make the Miner accessible from the internet.

Now I'm curious: can you mine Litecoin or other coin?

I thought the miner was "limited" to only mining Bitcoin in the Canaan pool.

The UI of this device is just crap. I've changed the password of my Avalon Nano 3 twice and I still login with root:root. Most pages on the UI are accessible without password.

There are three API's currently know:

But there must be an API which the App uses to set some  basic settings. I didn't look into it yet, but obviously it is time to dig into it deeper. Maybe this API allows configuring the device without password?

obviously this  seems the problem, willi is right 100%.

do not port forward nor put the nano 3 in dmz, dont make it accessible via internet.

the fact they make like $0.15 per day

last time i hired an engineer from that part of the world, it cost $75k annual. cheaper than other places, but the 15 cent myth is something i've not been able to replicate.

I could bust out the watt meter and see what power consumption it's using if nobody has numbers for that yet.

that would be interesting.

I was talking about the miner.

At current pricing the Avalon Nano 3 makes about $0.17 per day at high speed and $0.14 per day at medium speed.
At high speed it is showing electricity usage of 136 watts and a speed of 4TH/s.
At medium speed it is showing electricity usage of 94 watts and a speed of 3.2TH/s.

This seems to point to a 34 watts per TH at high speed and roughly 30 watts per TH at medium speed.  Not a huge difference in reality when we're talking about pennies, but >10% more efficient is something when you also consider electricity cost.  For example, using a $0.06 per KW cost, the miner loses $0.025 per day at high speed while making $0.005 per day at medium speed.

I will say that it is also quieter at medium speed, which may not matter at all given how quiet it already is, but it's noticeable.

After seeing these results I will probably leave it at medium speed until winter when the heat will be welcomed.  Realistically, I think these devices are probably best considered lottery devices with solo mining while acting as space heaters.

they are low cost low effort dca and hodl miners.

If you point it to nicehash or viabtc you won’t get a payout until you get to 0.001 btc.

that is about 400 days.
when you get the payout it comes as a single tx which means you get free consolidation.

if you point to nice hash you can be no kyc.

if you make a clean address no-one knows who owns it.

your cost for all that is 130 for the unit and 400 days power which at medium is 1000 kwatts that is about 130 usd. for me

so 260 usd to get  0.001 anyonmous no kyc btc in 400 days

I like to think that is far more likely to be okay 👌 due to btc going up then me hitting a block in those 400 days.
