From what I've been able to gather, your friend actually takes drugs to increase his self-confidence so he can keep winning when gambling, and also to keep himself from getting sleepy easily, but in the end he ends up messing up his concentration and ruining it because his rest time is messed up.

No need involving medical professionals on this, it's natural with the spending habit of human. The richer a person gets the higher his expenses, and how he spends money. That's same with gambling. When a gambler hits a certain significant amount of money, that makes him feel like a high roller, he wouldn't wager like a low roller anymore. The self-control disappears at this point. I think gamblers at some point would need help with managing money. Especially with people who are not strongly backed with the knowledge of money management skill. Those who find hard time controlling theirselves in gambling are those people who have less discipline in theirselves and their emotions will mostly prevail over their right thinking. When gamblers experienced too much losing or too much winning, thats the time their self-control will be highly tested. And if you are not good enough, you will end up seeing yourself addicted in gambling and eventually ruin your finances more than you’ll ever know.
