For both the penalty and the bonus, this applies only to your merit score, and does not affect sendable merit (sMerit).

My interest here seems to apply to the reading more! Perhaps there have to be some mic icon I could press to read to, as some signaler or proof of my having to read more. Maybe I’ll upload a voice note of my having to read as proof and perhaps some app sensor that would sense my having to stir at my screen to relate my screen time and by some means calculate how am having to read. Lol,,,

Please don't take it personally mate, it's just another April fool thread  🤠🤠🤠, imagine if things works like this through our the year or more it's a cheating because many people will take advantage of it and also abuse it. Reading a post without participating by commenting on them and still getting fake merits/rewards is how some social medias are working and many of them are fake. It's just another April fool. This new April is very different from the past, the previous one was a suspected spammers and I got the tag on my profile also but I believe after today the whole system will come to normal.

To address this, I've added a merit "cost" to posting: from this point forward, for every 15 characters you post, you will lose one Merit point. This should eliminate any incentive to make low-value posts.

Any halfway-decent poster should be able to earn much more merit than they lose due to the penalty. But I recognize that some good posts are occasionally overlooked. I am totally aware of April fools, but let's assume it were true. I see a fundamental contradiction hidden in these adjustments. I fully agree that reading other members' posts is a necessary (though not sufficient) condition for writing your own qualified comments. However, your proposal assumes that reading is always rewarded with merits, although you can also read different things, including shit posts.

While writing posts, on the other hand, is a priori considered something that should be punished by depriving of merits. Although a written post can be much better than what a person had to read before. Why then should writing not be encouraged? Such moments lead to false implicature, as if reading is always a positive and useful activity, while posting is instantly associated with spam.

If this proposal were brought up for serious discussion (although I suspect that today everyone is in a too cheerful mood for that and I will not be taken seriously), then I would not support it. After all, in my opinion, the existing merit system indirectly motivates reading, and this is even can be considered a priority. Because without prior study of already available information, without knowing who has already said something on the topic that interests you, it is not possible to create a high-quality post that would eventually be evaluated by others with merits.

P.S. I suppose, my merit count would be much lower after this post

You know those free Merits are not real, yeah?  You can check it by clicking on a "Merit" button under your profile and you will see the actual summary for your account.
But even if it was real, I guess, theymos` idea was not just in scrolling the walls.

The fact that this is much easier with available AI generators doesn't imply that there is no good posts here anymore. This does not in any way change my argument for writing quality posts that require a fair amount of reading in the first place.

Lol....Theymos caught me here, at first when I logged in and read some post and I saw my merit was increasing on the profile page without seeing people that merited me on the merit dashboard, and while the actual number of my merit is still intact, Then I thought it was a network problem with the platform maybe some upgrades was going on, then gave it sometime and later came back still same thing, I was a bit confused even to the extent I thought my account was clonned or hacked and had to do change of password and Google Authentication binding, until I saw the headline News about the merit adjustment, And coupled with what today's date entails April 1. Nice catch @Theymos!.
