We've seen this done in the past. This was discontinued due to some problems.

The relevant topic is below.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5098450.0

Over the years that have passed Grin has made many innovations and improved itself.
now has multiple wallets working properly.

What are the chances of grin being used as a payment method again on the bitcointalk forum?

The answer to your question is in the first post of the topic you mentioned.

November 2021 update: grin payments are currently not being accepted. My payments code broke, and since grin payments were never very common, it hasn't been a priority to fix it.

So payment in Grin might come up someday, but it's not a high priority. I personally doubt it will appear in the near future.

P.S. Move the topic to the Meta section, since the subject of the topic is primarily about the forum.

Thank you for your quick and detailed answer Sir.

I have read that there have been many developments regarding grin. Unfortunately, I do not have sufficient technical knowledge to know which innovation could have fully solved the problems mentioned by Mr. Theymos.

I hope software developers can address this issue and we can see history repeating itself.

I hope it is not an exaggeration to think that decentralized and privacy-oriented projects, which are a birthright, should receive positive discrimination.

I don't know what to do about moving the topic to "meta". If it's not a huge mistake,
I'd prefer it to stay in the same place.

I agree with you. Grin has indeed come a long way with its innovations and improvements over the years. The development of multiple functional wallets is a testament to its progress.

Regarding the possibility of Grin being used as a payment method again on the Bitcointalk forum, I think it's a feasible idea. However, it might require a thorough assessment of the current infrastructure and security measures in place. The previous discontinuation due to problems indicates that any reintroduction should be approached with caution.

It would be interesting to see how the community and the forum administrators view this possibility. I believe it could bring about a positive change, provided the concerns that led to its discontinuation are adequately addressed.

I'll keep an eye on this topic and look forward to seeing how it develops. It might take some time, but it's certainly worth exploring.

Grin's market cap is only at $9.8 million today and there's barely any trading volume and liquidity on centralized exchanges. Safe to assume that it has little to no attention now and that it's pretty much a 'dead' project now, unfortunately. If it had little to no usage back then, then pretty much almost no one would be using it today.

Everyone who tried to support Grin lost their ass and probably wondered why the forum tried to support it in the first place. I’m guessing we won’t see the forum pick and choose shitcoins for the members here to get fleeced by again. Just my thoughts… I still wonder what connection Grin developers had with the forum that got them such one of a kind support.

GRIN is a serious project, it is not for nothing that it was accepted as a means of payment on the forum.
The node synchronization issues seem to be all fixed.
I think the devs are available to help get the GRIN payment methods back up and running.

GRIN is a serious project
For your information, every projects (crypto project) that exists, consider themselves serious project. Even the community of that projects considers it serious project or they would not spend their time.

It's the saying and motivation that drives the community but ultimately in the long run, the project which can keep the community together and spread wider - becomes the successful project and can eventually establish that they are serious project. Just by telling or assuming that "we" are serious project, does not make a project serious and successful.

Truth be told, it's going to be VERY DIFFICULT to create an alternative SoV/payments cryptocurrency (besides stablecoins) that could rival bitcoin, even with a project with good marketing/bizdev. Even those with good technical fundamentals like Monero/Grin will simply just slowly but surely die in terms of attention.

Seems like zero since the main problem is popularity. I wonder why theymos didn't accept Litecoin or DAI because both of them are popular, probably we won't see many requests right now because the on chain fees is still cheap.

It's not even listed on top exchanges, so the volume is low and no one talk about it https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/grin/#Markets

Most people are more interested in a quick hype, than anything with good tech. Proof of this statement: look at most altcoins, ICOs, DeFi, NFT and Ordinals. The large majority of it is BS, but because of the hype some people earn a lot of money (and many people no doubt lose money). Add the fact that many "users" don't even want to install their own wallet, and it becomes very difficult to get real users for something that could be good.

It was listed on top exchanges before like on Binance it was just removed due to AML since Grin uses Mimblewimble protocol all transactions are private it can be used for money laundering just like Monero that is why top exchanges removed it it's because it is a privacy coin.
Almost all privacy coins are being removed from Binance and other exchanges.

for a long time the forum only accepted btc because, well, bitcointalk.org i guess. altcoins were specifically excluded iirc.

grin was the sole exception due to its tech i believe.

I couldn’t find any up to date information on Grin daily transactions but based on its trading volume and past transaction data it seems hardly anyone is using it. If most blocks are nearly empty then there isn’t much of an anonymity set for users to hide amongst. Just because it has good tech doesn’t mean that every niche altcoin should be accepted in the forum. If you really must use it then you can look for a swap service with Grin to BTC exchanges, although I’m not sure if any reputable ones exist.

I'd even argue that even without all these things you've mentioned, the likes of Grin/XMR would still heavily struggle to gain adoption outside of DN markets. Bitcoin has struggled for so long(and is still quite struggling now) to gain adoption with all its evangelists, whereas these alternatives obviously don't have as many die-hard fans as bitcoin. They mostly just have libertarians/devs who think the tech is cool but without the same high-conviction buyers as bitcoin.

I wouldn't waste any time with Grin coin payments in 2024.
Someone (theymos?) probably had a good idea of enabling a way to make option for private payments in bitcointalk forum, but I don't know anyone who owns or uses Grin.
Maybe adding Lightning Network payment could be introduced instead, or monero for more privacy.

for a long time the forum only accepted btc because, well, bitcointalk.org i guess. altcoins were specifically excluded iirc.
grin was the sole exception due to its tech i believe.
It's best if it remains restricted to Bitcoin or Bitcoin side chain and off chain scalability solutions.

Theymos cannot guarantee if an altcoin project will remain the way it is 10-20 years down the road just as Bitcoin has been. If the forum adopts another payment option, it's an endorsement of it, a huge one at that. If it fails it gives the forum a very bad look and leave a gap open needing to be filled. Could easily just be one failed experiment after the other.

The evil units fee should have already been discontinued and a LN Chanel opened for copper membership payment.

Even those with good technical fundamentals like Monero/Grin will simply just slowly but surely die in terms of attention.

Define "die".  Monero is currently operating more efficiently than ever before.  It truly offers privacy and is easy to use.  Grin presents a nice concept, although it falls slightly short in terms of privacy compared to Monero, it compensates with significantly improved scalability.  Personally, I pay with XMR my grocery shopping, and I'm certain it receives acknowledgment from other crypto enthusiasts as well.  The fact that rich aren't investing in it doesn't diminish its attention.  It still captures attention, quietly.  It's just not the top store-of-value asset, that's all.

We shall not forget the purpose of cryptocurrency.
