If you see the links provided by cygan[1][2] - which he got from the back of the coin as the first 8 characters represent the first eight characters of the address - you'll notice that it says that the coin is "Active", which means that the bitcoin within still hasn't been spent. A coin that has been spent has the status changed to "Opened", like this[3] one.

This information is easily obtained from any blockchain explorer, thus the transparency of the status of these coins.
