Why do some people hide to gamble

It might be illegal to gamble cards in the country, that could be the reason why the guys are hiding. In Nigeria, non skilled card games are considered illegal and players can be arrested.

OP I don’t think you take your safety seriously. How can you see a group of guys in hidden spot and decide to go join them? That’s the most stupid thing ever. They could be thieves or worse. There is a saying “curiosity killed the cat.” I hope your curiosity doesn’t get you into trouble one day.

However, on the area of my curiosity I sincerely appreciate your advice and I have actually learned my lessons from your words , because I might  have landed myself into trouble if any of the enforcement agencies like the police had mistakenly seen us together because their is virtually nothing to justify my innocence that I am not one of them considering the hidden spot .Thanks a lot for the good advice .

Even today, when gambling is already legalized in several countries, there are still many people who consider gambling to be something "bad", that it is no good, that it is illegal (even though it is not).

Many people are afraid to tell family and friends that they play because they are afraid that it will cause a negative reaction or reprimand, so they prefer to play in silence.

Unfortunately, this only makes the situation worse for people who are addicted, because when they gamble alone, no one else can help monitor their habits, time or money spent on gambling.

Ultimately, it is necessary to legalize gambling in more countries, and talk more openly about its risks, even in schools or with parents. It needs to be controlled, but never hidden.

That's what I also think: card games such as poker are usually illegal in public, but despite that, gambling is still generally frowned upon by society. It's viewed as something bad, and those who do it are negatively seen as addicts, which is the main reason why most of us prefer not to openly discuss it. I personally tend to avoid it, unless I'm with a group of people I know who also participate and feel comfortable discussing it without being judged.

This is also one of the reasons I prefer to avoid cryptocurrency discussions, because everyone has their own opinion, and I'd rather not get involved changing someone else's mind.

I agree that it's due to privacy reasons, but I'll have to disagree on the part where you mentioned that people perceive gamblers as rich. From what I've personally noticed and based on how society sees gambling, I believe it's quite the opposite. Most gamblers are seen as broke and will do anything to feed their addiction. I get it if you're talking about cryptocurrencies; if you say you have Bitcoin, then you're potentially viewed as someone who's quite wealthy, which is the main reason I avoid talking about it, but with gambling? I highly doubt that's the case. I've never encountered it or ever thought about it for someone else.

It is illegal and so they keep it quiet and hidden. I did this before together with some of my friends but I see a fair gamble in this situation because nobody will surely cheat you within the group unlike in some big casinos. But yes, the consequences if got caught by the authorities are quite harsh, and have no way to complain about it while they take our money.

Of course, I'm not going to say this is the best way to gamble because this is very informal but being with friends is a different gambling experience than in the casino with different people.

I was walking down my street this evening I saw some group of guys in a hidden corner of an uncompleted building playing WHOT games ordinarily I felt they are just spending usual time as friends and that they are playing the WHOT game to keep themselves busy while discussing.

But when I got closer to them I discovered that there was a dirty container close to them and inside the container is money they bet for the game they are playing , and if not careful observed you will never believe that they are playing bet games .

My curiosity led me closer to them I was interacting with one of them and at same time observing what they are doing , one thing I observed was that they stake with huge amount and they don’t give you change even when your money requires change instead you will use it and bet for another round.

Many gamblers that I know feels more comfortable gambling in a private place, and I also prefer gambling in a private location too, I am from a country where you don't want the public to see you in a casino, people don't like minding their business over here, they won't forget when they see in a casino.

When the time is right they will use it against you, I have seen this played out a few times before so people are now hiding from the public eye, I have never entered into a casino nearby to gamble and that's why I prefer online casinos because no one will know that I am gambling.

Moreover a public place comes with lots of distractions, even if everyone is a gambler, I would like to be alone and enjoy my gambling activities instead.

Most people who gamble will do so in secret because they know that gambling is very contrary to general society with negative impacts that will occur later.

I am not surprised by this because I know such exists and a lot of people do bet on games to win huge amount of money without doing it through a casino or a website. They do that in the hope that their wins are not held and can easily get to understand each other through that game they play.
In some societies, where it is prohibited, people go hidden to bet and also underage also do that by going to hide to play such games. Gambling is prohibited in some countries or some part of some countries, so anyone seen doing it can be penalized, so the best they can do is to go hidden.

Yeah so many people bet or Gamble on different criteria just to win huge amount of money, probably why they hide to gamble might be that they don't want to showcase it to the public moreso such acts might not be authorized by most country so they decide to hide to do this and it's not a best way to gamble cause most people might see this pattern as illegal.
Like some of us that does ours through online sites and casinos some many others don't enjoy this online stuff but tend to do it with people surrounded whereby they share common minds together.

OP, please ask directly the subjects you mentioned to get a more complete answer. Personally, I have a little speculation that it could be cases of gambling addiction, it could be people who are having appointments at the card game without approval,... I can assume countless other cases together. But anyway, it's their decision, no matter what form things take, I just want to remind them to pay attention to testing before every decision.

It’s due to country general overview about gambling. Gambling in general is viewed negatively in my country since we have a very strong belief on religion. We bunch different religion here that shows how my country is a fanatic of having faith to deity.

I personally don’t want to gamble publicly due to my privacy. I usually gamble with huge bankroll which I’m not comfortable to show in public to avoid potential problem in future. Besides, what benefits you can get if you gamble publicly while you are just attracting criminals to do something bad to you when you hit a jackpot.

Back when I was young I also did this kind of thing but in a different kind of game. Basketball shooting in the three-point line. This is an old-school type of gambling actually and we are also keeping the bets in a secure place, most of the time under the rim where the big stones are placed to keep the basketball court in place. A small cup is there where the money is placed and the only one who will get near it is the winner.
We do that kind of hiding because the police patrol always uses our street when they are roving. We won't easily get caught since the money is not in our hands and it looks like we are just playing a shooting game.
It's actually simple why they hide. It's illegal, and it could also mean the police taking the money and won't even arrest you and they will use it for their own. It's very obvious those kinds of gambling are illegal and if caught by the law enforcers they will definitely pay the punishment. All those street gambling can sometimes lead to serious fight that could also lead to death of both gamblers or some random innocent individual who happen to be around the environment during the fight. that's true, because there are countries that don't legalize gambling, and those who gamble in secret may be one of the factors because of this, now if they live in a country where gambling is prohibited, and when they are found out by the government maybe they will get into trouble because it has violated the law established by the state. because in my opinion gambling can destroy someone's life, but it is also because of their own fault for gambling excessively.
but the fact is that gambling is very tempting, so even though it is said that gambling is prohibited, there are still people who gamble secretly and clandestinely, this cannot be denied. I am sure this happens in countries that do not legalize gambling.
