This is not political discussion but about what you think can help our economy. This is also not about political parties.
During Obasanjo, Yaradua and Jonathan, land borders were opened. There was slight inflation but better than Buhari time in a way people do not that complained about it. If I can remember very well, during Jonathan time, people complained about terrorism (Boko Haram) and corruption most, but the economy was good. Nigeria emerged as the largest economy during his time and GDP grew significantly at the time..
Buhari became the president and closed the land borders. Inflation started. The borders are still close and inflation continued. This time is not really different than unstable economy. Increase in supply is important at times which can lower the price of goods.
The United States which has the largest economy in the world even import than export.
Exporting is good as it will increase GDP, but Buhari and Tinubu government look for ways Nigeria are going to produce more things locally but our GDP is decreasing. Sometimes, it is easy to explain in theory, but in real life it can be different.

Actually to be frank I think it should be open to allow competitiveness because now our local goods are way too expensive and sometimes sub-par to their foreign counterpart, using rice for example which is the most consumed food in our country, since the shutting down of border, smuggling foreign rice made it more expensive while our local rice are still expensive and there are higher chances of eating stone or it having a tatse sub-par to the imported rice from Thai, this has made many still continue to go for it even against the price. Another thing is from the fact Market men/women prefer the foreign since its usually up to the actual measure and sometimes more than while our local is usually below it.

I agree with you, specifically on rice, I think this our local producers are not getting enough competition in terms of price and quality production. If the border gets open, the supply of foreign rice will increase in the market, whereas the demand is lesser than the supply will only lead to reduction in price of these goods and will also serve as a warning to our local producers to improve on their quality of production, so consumers can prefer buying locally made than the imported. I just hope things gets back to being normal, I only heard it has started from few users but watching down to my locality nothing of such is happening, price of goods are still so much cost.

You see the case of this rice, it was the main commodity or produce that got our boarders closed. The past administration were actually looking for a way to make Nigerians not only prioritize the locally made rice but also have some to export out to other countries. The government then brought around the RIFAN scheme which was just disbursed to few of themselves and laundered the rest. Currently this isn’t working as there are no market competition and the producers are hiking price with the claims that the cost of cultivating is high. Should there be extra supply of the goods, market will flow

From wetin me i understand, the purposes wey make our government shut the borders no dey work, dem shut down the border for security and economic reasons, them been wan stop people from smuggling arms and weapons into Nigeria through the borders, and them been wan stimulate local production. But as Naija dey now, insecurity and economic hardship still dey.
E get one big problem wey our leaders dey get, and it is that dem no dey gree say their policy don fail, dem go still stick to am. I believe say every good leader suppose to dey flexible in correcting their mistakes and that includes reversing a policy that is failing and causing hardship to people, rather than stick to it and promising them future gains, which we are never sure of in this country.

I sincerely thought that the land borders were already opened since the assumption of office by president Tinubu. They should open it so that there will be free trade once more and so that the government gets to see how worthless the Naira is even across border trade transactions. No offense intended, but the reality is that the borders need to be opened so that maketers can make less expensive decisions on how to import their goods as much as they export too and in return, it benefits us and our pocket size.

Land boarders should be opened again because the losses we are suffering is fart higher than the safety they are protecting, what is the work of the immigrations, customs and other boarder and land controlling agencies that they will not discharge their duties to the fullest, whereby they ensure that no any contraband escape the route of operation at the boarder, if this is not possible then, such could mean that they are being left for not doing their roles and nothing is being done to that, they should open the boarder and let the food items and other imported commodities price come down.

You are on point at Charles tim yea I think those land boarders should be opened for goods to become cheaper. I could remember when people usually go to Benin republic (coutonou ) to buy goods at cheaper rate, when our currency has more value against theirs. but today people no longer buy things from there, because of the boarder closed and we where forced to produce things ourself and due to not having access to export our own goods to the neighbours country, it becomes expensive within ourselves. Though the intension of the federal government to close the boarder might just be for Nigerians to appreciate their product and increase productivity, but instead we began to sell things expensive to ourselves which is not good.
For me the border closed was not a bad thing, it was a way of Nigerians to be creative and productive and not relying solely on every imported goods but making use of what they have and see how we can manage our products. But since it is not possible any longer I guest the boarder should be opened for easy access from then import and export will take place.

Na very good observation you just made so my Oga as regards to the close border wey don cause scarcity of food produces and other needed amenities for we country, because normally though this may seems to have been a brilliant idea oh, but it was done without first putting in place things to help us survive while the border was closed, but yet it seems the government didn't have a Plan-B, which is which we saw today, a hike in the price of goods, simply because we have a limited supply for the larger demand. Hence, just as you said, eh for really make sense if this present government could have a rethink and open the border, so that people could be able to freely import and export goods into the country, in other to great a balance both between demand and supply.

Right and clear as emphasized, very true that we can digress so much literally on possibilities as my instincts may entail but in a reality it may not be associated with all that to have realistic solutions to our economy ground just like this. Let's just assume this fact that the past governments really had the through of elevating our economy to their minds and that's why borders where so opens and it was some of those opened and unbiased government that's why the Goodluck and Yaradua's governments where commendable. The tenure of Buhari and the Tinubu's government is such a monopoly government where they shutdown the border and made a narrow way to befit only some enterprises and this has limited the large number of importers and exporters in our country which which ought to be measures to contribute to the economy growths.

Our country is already a very messed up country that seems nothing is going to work and from the look of things, it seems the previous government and the current one are busy fight what isn’t relevant and in quest of trying to promote local consumption, they’re unconsciously (better out that way) killing the country. Just as you mentioned that, even America with the highest and good GDP, still does ally of import, then why Nija matter Dey always go left🥺?
Now let’s get things straight, we Dey promote local consumption but yet we no get the adequate tools to use produce these things wey go circulate for the country and I think the government Dey focus more on borrowing for the very wrong course and these country Dey really amaze me because how you go borrow to take pay another loan?
Make them no open boarder, make them just sell the country.

~snip~ Sometimes, it is easy to explain in theory, but in real life it can be different.
That is just it, because it is easily said than done. I know that the closure of the border was also a way we can cherish our locally made products but let us not forget that we have not yet met international standards of producing things of good quality therefore opening of the border is necessary so that individuals can get access to quality products abroad pending when our government will be ready to meet up international standards. Closing of the border is baseless since we are still facing inflation even though we are still dealing with locally made products. The growth of our economy should be the priority of the government as a nation that is experiencing low economic growth can lead to debt crisis just like we are experiencing now because the country is already owning a lot of money and involving in too many debts will instead take us backwards and with don't want such scenario.

I consider the government should reopen the border, yes. I still remember when the border was suddenly closed. This really affected most Nigerians, especially those workers. I think our economy was better then than now.
Closing people's source of living without a major plan to fall back on is absolutely wrong. The local source has even more experience now, so it's not even a fallback plan.
In place of rice, which is currently the major consumable in the country, our local rice is not doing justice to us; I doubt if the producers even eat the rice they produce. The stress of preparing the rice will definitely make one get the foreign rice without undermining the cost. I believe if the border is reopened, there will be a place of competition in price, quality, and quantity between the foreign and the local rice, which basically will make the local producers sit up and do the needful. Once this is done, there will be more demand for local rice and less for foreign rice, which is actually their major reason for closing it. It is the first place for Nigerians to patronize our local rice and for it to be exported to other countries for sales. But with the look of things, this rice can't even pass to other countries unless it's been reformed. So to achieve the goal, I mean the reasons for closing it, we need to improve.

Currently this isn’t working as there are no market competition and the producers are hiking price with the claims that the cost of cultivating is high. Should there be extra supply of the goods, market will flow They earlier knew that rice is a staple(meaning it is an imported goods most likely consumed by people in a country), be it occasions and ceremonies its normally what is served on the table, in the course of all these, they took a step to limit/end the rate of importation and make us the manufacturers but failed to address many issues that would have helped to achieve all these. The first step would have been to plan ahead, by already building industrialization to help manufacture and filter our local made rice to be either better or same way as the imported. Our government might in a way be good at thinking out solutions but lacks a lot of ideas to implement in a way it won't affect the normal citizen or even if it those should not have been for this long, we are yet still suffering all what Buhari put us into and this government is slacking on taking very implicit actions.

Me I no even see the reason to close this land borders self if no be say dem dey say proliferation of arms and ammunition na through those axis but yet we still know say illegal arms don full everywhere for the country wey make insecurity take high. So wetin be the essence of closing them when wetin dem dey avoid still dey happen.
You can close such borders if you dey produce something wey una dey use but for here na almost everything naija dey import and you want force production wen no indices for the production. Every time national grid dey collapse and on top dat you hardly see light especially for some states. The borders wey dem close follow make naija difficult to survive in, if time reach to close border we go know, no be now.

Closing of the border wasn't actually a bad idea from the onset but it's just the preparation for it to be closed was not made and it's still not put in place, I believe the whole idea of this was to actually give our local production house a boost of confidence and also to reduce the cost the nation having to import even little things that we can very well produce ourselves. But when the facility, infrastructure and man power to make the production available enough to meet the product demands, it then now becomes a major issues even more worst than having to import the goods initially.

I'm a strong advocate of reopening our land borders, first for easy importations and exportation of goods and services. In terms of food production our productivity as a nation has not matched the population in this country, so if there is a window whereby neighboring countries can easily bring in their goods into the country and sell it at the cheaper rate, it will help the economy because it will drive down scarcity and create room for more availability. Is obvious that ever since the previous administration closed the land borders, inflation has been going to the roof level, and there has not been hope insight for it to come down, so it's better for the borders to be reopened make we try dey buy things cheaper, then any day way we decide to be productive and dey self-sufficient with our productivity then we can close it.

One way or the other there is politics in everything and the government thinks that closing the boarder is a measure to reduce inflation and for people to give our own products an opportunity to become like products that are imported. And if the government are not helping matters because even the local products are expensive and the motive was to reduce the price of commodity if we should patronize our own products. But looks like the decision closing the boarder is doing more harm than good.
During the time of obasonjo and Yaradua they have insight of what they were doing not now that the government is confused and left for me they should open it if there is competition in the market it might actually help in time of revenue generation too. So they should just open it.

I believe the whole idea of this was to actually give our local production house a boost of confidence
Come to think about it ehn, i no think say government gats close our land borders to help local production, they can support local producers and leave the borders open for competition. Wetin i believe be say competition dey help businesses to grow and improve and e dey also help to control the prices of goods, so whatever we go dey import through our land borders, we go also dey produce locally, leaving the market open for competition.
