I have been thinking about how I've been reading a lot of topics from scammers who give themselves away easily by saying they recover bitcoins and I've been wondering how are these scammers finding about Bitcointalk when some regular people have not yet discovered this forum on their own.

I know some scammers are intelligent people who read a lot and can discover this forum from their research while trying to gather information, but it is possible that some of the people we are referring to the forum are scammers, and we now also have to be careful of the people we refer to Bitcointalk.

Avoid referring the forum to friends and even family who we know have tendencies to become scammers, have affiliations with any known scammer, etc.

Haven’t you also have a thought that the scammers are or might be regular members already in the forum?. The forum allows the creation of alts so once a member decides to go into scamming they can just easily create another account and advertise their products. So to me, the biggest number of this scam accounts are members that are already here

Also I don’t second the idea of you not guiding people to the forum because they will scam. This forum could be the only place they get authentic information about cryptocurrency and should they later involve into scamming you can as well report the account

I've been wondering how are these scammers finding about Bitcointalk when some regular people have not yet discovered this forum on their own.

Same way most of use found our way here, "the internet". I don't believe it's the act of introducing others to the forum that attracts scammers. Instead, they find their way here through the internet. They aren't just on BitcoinTalk, but also on all social media platforms. Most ordinary people who haven't come across Bitcoin aren't interested in it or cryptocurrency. Meanwhile, those interested but not on this platform likely lack information about it.

Many people are aware of Bitcoin but don't see the need to create an account. That's why you often see new accounts asking important questions and then disappearing. So to answer your question it's unlikely that those referred here turn out to be scammers. although some may be spammers joining for signature campaigns. However, scammers manage to infiltrate every platform.

Where there is money, expect scammers to lurk around, too. Bitcoin is value. In this forum you can make lots of money through different deals, trades, services and carrying out tasks. So I am not surprised that we have so many scammers here, and it is not just Bitcointalk. They are in other forums too, and it's even worse in some. At least here in Bitcointalk we do have the default trust and flag system.

I don't think there is always someone introducing new scammers here. Most of them are probably old scammers who have been busted, and they just create new accounts.

if they are a scammer and know Bitcoin, it'll be most likely a matter of time before they hear about bitcointalk so I am not really surprised when a scammer stumbles on this forum.

Avoid referring the forum to friends and even family who we know have tendencies to become scammers, have affiliations with any known scammer, etc.
I don't think I can do this, if they ask me where can they find information about Bitcoin I'd probably recommend bitcointalk to them.

Most of them are probably old scammers who have been busted, and they just create new accounts.
yeah, you are probably right about this.

Recovery scammers particularly goes through the internet's nooks and crannies to spam their script as there were times I found their ass on obscure websites lol. I'm guessing a lot of them are just bots.

So I'm not surprised they found their way here on bitcointalk.org. It's not mainstream, yes but the forum is popular and gets a pretty good ranking in searches.

We can't stop scammers from having accounts on this forum or getting here through the Google search engine and that's why any attempt to not recommend this forum to your friends and colleagues
would be an attempt to stop them from learning about Bitcoin.

We don't really know who's going to be a scammer and who's going to be a good and reputable member of the forum in future. That's why it's not going to be helpful to stop someone from learning about Bitcoin through Bitcointalk.

The ones who have scamming mindset and try to scam the members of the forum will get tagged and the ones who have awareness regarding scammers will never fall for their scams. I believe we should not prevent someone from knowing about this forum.

I know some scammers are intelligent people
I don't think they are intelligent. An intelligent person will never live a life of a scammer. He will find a way to bring bread and butter in a legitimate way so that the business can sustain for longer term and make a positive impact for him and his family.

I don't think this forum is really unknown, they're looking for "Bitcoin" so if they search "Bitcoin forum" on google, most likely this forum will appeared on the first list. Either experienced users or new users who have an intention to scam, both of them have a same chance.

I didn't mean to support scammers, but even though there are many scammers that offer Bitcoin recovery, the people who get scammed by recovery service is really low compared to other scams (most of them are complaint to casinos).

Sometimes people fall for very obvious scams. It happens all the time. Just because you see through these scams doesn’t mean everyone is capable of doing so. There are many people without proper education or experience who read bitcointalk. These people will believe whatever they are told.

“Hey, have you got scammed? Too bad. You are lucky doe, I can save your funds. Give me 0.1btc and I’ll get your funds back to you in 24 hours.”

Boom.

A proposition like this exploits the weaknesses of the victim. He plays to his desperation and then providing fake a hope and a solution. (For a price)

Some of these victims might think it is the same guy who stole his funds. So they believe these scammers, only to get scammed one more time.

OP, you may want to ask a slightly different question. How do people who fall into the hands of scammers immediately after being scammed find and come to this forum to complain? Why don't they think first? Therefore, no matter how much you protect stupid and naive people, you cannot save them from their own stupidity. If you are a reasonable person, you will not fall into the hands of scammers; if not, then this should not bother the forum. This is not a primary school.

Don't underestimate those bastards they might already know your name and email address. People who are good in social engineering become more and more better based on the number of their experience from scamming. That's why those bastards evolve and get more information the more they interact and wants to make their first victims.

I don't think they are intelligent. An intelligent person will never live a life of a scammer. He will find a way to bring bread and butter in a legitimate way so that the business can sustain for longer term and make a positive impact for him and his family.

I believe scammers are lazy bastards. They can't do a job or work to earn a living but instead, they think of scamming others and eating what they their money that they have earned with hard work and dedication. They might not be intelligent, but they practice a lot which makes them good enough to pull off the scams on vulnerable people, make them face an experienced person who has quick thinking abilities and they would get shit for their tricks that some people consider intelligence.

They target vulnerable people because they know they aren't going to get anything if they try to scam people with knowledge, so they always look for weaknesses among their preys and then trick them with their words and actions which can be obvious for someone smart but aren't for someone who doesn't know much about these things which is the reason why they get success.

Most scammers are indeed smooth-brained and low IQ, but a few cases stand out as deviations from the norm. For example, Bernie Madoff comes to mind. In his case, though, everything started out as legitimate, but after he stopped being able to produce genuine returns for his clients, he decided to turn full scammer, just taking the funds from new clients to pay the old. Madoff is indeed simple an exception to the rule.

The whole thing reminds me of a quote by theymos:

I have been thinking about how I've been reading a lot of topics from scammers who give themselves away easily by saying they recover bitcoins and I've been wondering how are these scammers finding about Bitcointalk when some regular people have not yet discovered this forum on their own.

They are doing what they are good at and I am sure many newbies will fall for such a recovery thread. We all are aware of multiple scams as we have been active here and have been reading them. That does not work with anyone new to the crypto and new to Bitcointalk. The only way we can reduce such scams is to report those threads to the mods.

I know some scammers are intelligent people who read a lot and can discover this forum from their research while trying to gather information, but it is possible that some of the people we are referring to the forum are scammers, and we now also have to be careful of the people we refer to Bitcointalk.

I agree but I also feel that some of those users are alt-account holders who have disguised themselves. The only way to counter these guys as I have already told is to report any threads that you feel are offering unrealistic services.

Bitcointalk is the oldest and most famous forum about Bitcoin. It is not the initial domain name for Bitcoin forum but it inherits user data base from original Bitcoin forum created by Satoshi Nakamoto.

You don't need to be a genius to search about Bitcoin and will be given resources, links that direct you to this forum, Bitcointalk.org.

Quote
I know some scammers are intelligent people who read a lot and can discover this forum from their research while trying to gather information, but it is possible that some of the people we are referring to the forum are scammers, and we now also have to be careful of the people we refer to Bitcointalk.
If you want to be an influencer and go around to make speeches and let people around you to know about Bitcoin, this forum, it's not bad. You must know about risk on yourself like life and your bitcoin, can be kidnapped, stolen, and more risk. If you accept such risk, go ahead with public speeches in your communities but you can not control what people do. You only give them information, be a kind person or a scammer, they choose, not you.

Quote
Avoid referring the forum to friends and even family who we know have tendencies to become scammers, have affiliations with any known scammer, etc.
It's very unrealistic. You can not know what they want to do and if they are scammers, they will not let you know their scam intention. Very few scammers will let people know about their plans to scam.

Haven’t you also have a thought that the scammers are or might be regular members already in the forum?. The forum allows the creation of alts so once a member decides to go into scamming they can just easily create another account and advertise their products. So to me, the biggest number of this scam accounts are members that are already here

I won't say the biggest, but a huge portion yeah.
I mean, common, let's just look at the history of this forum, how many trusted members have turned out to be scammers, breaking the law, not paying their debts, running with money, just go to the Scam section, read the format you need to report a scam, think of congratulating the member who wrote that sticky only to find out he has been arrested for card fraud.

When you see that much money changing hands around here, when everything is about money, money, and so on and you have way too little for their needs some will stop thinking of limits when it's about making some too.

The whole thing reminds me of a quote by theymos:

scammers are often pretty stupid

That's a bit of salt on the wounds of those who have been scammed.

Scammers go out of their way to find places they can easily find victims and make money. There are occasional ones who find themselves in a situation that presents an opportunity and take it, without having the intention to scam when they joined. But they mostly seek out were they will hit less resistance, a quickly rising asset with the impression that it is making people wealthy quickly is a great environment.

That's a bit of salt on the wounds of those who have been scammed.
Someone else could say 'those who were scammed were mostly greedy', but that is not a blanket that fits everyone.

Man, I don't mean this in a bad way but - the entire post was paradoxically opined  Smiley

You said this and I tend to agree with you, not until you wrapped it up;

I know some scammers are intelligent people who read a lot and can discover this forum from their research[...]
Just like you said, you know this already... Have you ever seen a person with a tattooed inscription/tag on the forehead that says - I'm a scammer, be guided? How's anyone supposed to know?
AFAIK, some people could play like the day-saver just to gain a couple of trust scores, only to get busted and revealed as the villian ... In this user's case, it was already too late!!!

I wonder how many people here have scammers as friends. Without being told, people are generally cautious around friends and family members who have a criminal record. I don’t agree with the idea that scammers are being introduced to Bitcointalk by members. It may be difficult for newbies to find the forum mainly because Bitcointalk is not visible on google search engines when you search for Bitcoin. But scammers have a different motivation to search for crypto communities and anywhere they can find victims for their scam.

Op, here is an open forum, anyone can choose to be anything. A user could have an account for business and services and as well have another account for scamming. No one actually knows who is behind the screen. About scammers, I am no longer afraid of them since I discovered this forum. This forum will make you to be smart, and smarter than scammers. So, it will sound odd that someone is a member of this forum and still fall for cheap scams.

I know some scammers are intelligent people
I don't think they are intelligent. An intelligent person will never live a life of a scammer. He will find a way to bring bread and butter in a legitimate way so that the business can sustain for longer term and make a positive impact for him and his family.
Maybe we can say that scammers are negatively intelligent or they are just lazy intelligent guys who could not harness their potentials but resorted to scamming.

I can't say people are introducing scammers to the forum, although it is definitely possible, you also have to take note of the fact that this forum is a very popular one as well as a public one. There are certain keywords that if contained in your search using a service like Google or bing , Bitcointalk will definitely pop up especially because of the large volume of crypto information contained here especially relating to Bitcoin.
Of course people also introduce others to Bitcointalk how ever I strongly believe that majority of scammers and shit posters here were not introduced by someone here but rather found it themselves. Nevertheless I believe that the main reason most persons fall for scams is because they too were either greedy or poorly informed.

Avoid referring the forum to friends and even family who we know have tendencies to become scammers, have affiliations with any known scammer, etc.

I get that you dont pick your family or relatives, but if your friends show signs of becoming scammers, thats your responsibility, buddy!  You gotta surround yourself with better  people!

Besides, I dont agree that we should avoid recommending Bitcointalk altogether.  There is good info here and  scammers will try to scam regardless.

I didn't say not to recommend bitcointalk entirely, but for us to be cautious about who we refer it to.

Have you ever seen a person with a tattooed inscription/tag on the forehead that says - I'm a scammer, be guided? How's anyone supposed to know?
There is no forehead inscription, but some characters and attributes they may show or display will give them away, and because they may be your friends, you may choose to ignore these red flags.

Scammers are even the ones with the top updates; they are always working around the clock looking for a better river to Phish. A place where they believe they can catch more victims is where they are always after. So, you don't have to be surprised about who is bringing scammers to the forum; the forum is not hidden from any kind of person; it is open to the public, and therefore anybody can actually find their way here without the help of another person.

Sometimes, if I search for something on Google, part of the results I get always point to BTT, and that could be a way that anyone can easily get access to the forum.

There is a parable that my father always says, "It's a house rat that will always invite the street rat." I hope you know what that means   Grin

I mean these scammers for sure are just like regular people, they surely just blend in on the forum and we have no idea who they are, these guys that is already exposing themselves are just taking their chances I guess that there might be someone or some newbies that are going to take their obvious bait, Finding out the forum was kinda easy I guess I mean this forum was kinda famous when it comes to cryptocurrency forum, if your going to search about the top cryptocurrency forum, Bitcointalk is probably going to be the number one on the list or at least on the top. There might be some, where they are only invited by their friends but turn out to be some kind of scammer, I mean they would easily expose themselves most of the time unless they will have a good opportunity to scam a guaranteed money.

For sure there are always some chances that they are referring the forum to the wrong people,I think it just couldn't be helped that we just don't know who the scammers are, even if we just told it to someone that we really trust, we just don't know if he or she is a scammer somehow.

You know if we are going to be real scammers are not going to get away the only thing that we can do is be ready and be aware of it, be knowledgable so that scammers are not gonna be able to scam you, as long as these scammers are earning money they will not stop.

There is a parable that my father always says, "It's a house rat that will always invite the street rat." I hope you know what that means   Grin.
Very on point. I think that those that have stayed for longer here and have participated in many ways here, were originally introduced to the forum by a friend or family or foe who guided them through to learn about Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies investment.
The first time I joined, it took me a while to even navigate through the boards and after some time, I don't think many who are new here was here by accident, including the scammers who either see here as a learning, hunting, and harvesting ground.

Maybe we can say that scammers are negatively intelligent or they are just lazy intelligent guys who could not harness their potentials but resorted to scamming.
Intelligent is a gift. If someone misuse the gift then he is an unfortunate man. It does not bring anything good for anyone.

Without being told, people are generally cautious around friends and family members who have a criminal record.
If I don't know the moves of my friend(s) then he is not my friend at all, it's just someone who you know a little. A friend even with criminal record still is a friend for you.

You can’t ever get rid of scammers completely. Every platform that reaches a certain level of popularity has these kinds of problems, it isn’t unique to Bitcointalk. Crypto users are especially targeted. The only thing we can do is make people aware of what to look for and also follow best practices to protect our own selves from getting scammed.

The issue is you would not know if that person you referring is a scammer and there are sometimes the person you referred to the forum would referred others to the forum and those are the scamming group that would enter the forum with scamming activities. And one thing I like this forum is that those elements of scammers doesn't survive in the forum and once they detected, negative tag full their profile and they can't use it to Scam anyone here. So the best way for them is to repent and do the right thing.

And those who have the mindset.od scamming are easy to identify because as they came the first thing for them to do so scam people by going to the loan board to request a loan or or ask people to invest in their service.

The best way to deter these motherfuckers away from the forum is not giving them attention besides the complaint and the call-out.

What I usually do when I see posts like these is straight up report it for fraud, as most of the time I don't really feel like going out of my own way and creating a special thread for them in the reputation section, it's redundant anyway. I don't make comments about how I can smell through their bullshit, how I think they are a scammer or whatnot. Starving them of the attention they crave and need is the best course of action.

Cause picture this, these people bank on the hope that some hapless little turd who's down in his luck is gonna stumble upon their thread and ask for their help. And because of the nature of this forum, posts with more comments get put on the front page of the board for everyone to see. If we keep commenting on posts like this, even if the comments were well-meaning and preventative, there's still some glue-sniffer out there who's thinking the risks of not trusting the blatant scammer on the forum far outweighs the amount of money that they could steal from them.

So making sure they don't get to these posts by not commenting and just reporting them is the best course of action, they don't get in the first page of the board, no idiot's gonna happen upon their posts, and they would move someplace else or get banned here.

Scammers are everywhere, so it’s highly possible that some of the regular members here are the real scammers. This is the reason why one should not be too trusting but keep his bitcointalk account privately so that not only he will protect his own account but eventually protect the other forum members as well. And to think that we can’t pinpoint easily the scammers in the forum, then it’s still best not entertain new members that are still completely strange to you.

However, with regards to not guiding the people into bitcointalk forum, why not? We kept on saying that bitcointalk forum is the most legit and highly trusted crypto forum and yet we don’t promote it to those interested people. I believe this is some kind of a selfish thing, most especially if we are sure enough that their lives will eventually changed in the future once they’ll  be introduced to the forum and gain proper education about bitcoin and the crypto space.

This is a social space where both the good and bad come to for the supposed aim of finding more knowledge about bitcoin and what most of these scammers look out for is a place they can easily get ignorant and naive people they can sell their cheap tricks to. Its quite funny how many stories about scam we've gotten here but yet we still see that there are more people falling and it leaves me to wonder how many of them are legit and which are just begging for attention.
No one wishes to be scammed but what steps are we taking from repeating it? stopping or limiting who we disclose info to about the forum wont cut it because at the end of the day, the offender when caught can choose to come in as another user and the cycle continues.

I know some scammers are intelligent people
Hmm, that's true mate!
Scammers tend to misuse their abilities. In fact, if the scammer is presented as a subject, then my theory will be concluded from this: that the ability of these people is the best, but the conscience of these people is dead, they do not know the difference between right and wrong. The only fault of these people is that they obviously go with those things that are very difficult to do, but these people prefer this difficulty. Which is impossible to do, but these people do it. It is known that these people are smart and intelligent, but due to a lack of awareness, they lose their common sense. These spammers are actually hopeless and desperate people, so they don't like the right act as compared to the wrong.

Yeah definitely the target of spammers is the place that is popular. Spammers test you in a variety of ways to make you fall victim to their goals. And in the same way, it is also clear that not only on Bitcointalk, but everywhere where there is money interaction, you will find spammers there in countless numbers.

Actually. Because some of the experience I have had with scammers which try to steal from people by posing as recovery experts or whatever, I can tell you, they mostly seek for victims in technical support webpages and also in review webpages where people who are having trouble with their accounts of exchanges and personal wallets are more likely to go to and fall for their scam.
They can also try to find victims in YouTube videos which are about Cryptocurrencies, regardless the whole YouTube channel is dedicated to Bitcoin or it is just a mainstream channel like CNN or Fox, giving some of their economics segments to talk about Bitcoin.
In reality, those scammers who promise to recover money for people are very unlikely to be here, as there are many experimented members who will call out their scam as soon as they post about it in here. This forum may be one of the places of the internet where there is a high concentration/participation of people who know how to spot a BTC scams the fastest. Not a place we're scammers would like to spend their time.

I know some scammers are intelligent people who read a lot and can discover this forum from their research while trying to gather information,
Reading brings about exposure and development. He who won't read shouldn't blame others for reading. You're right about the level of hard work and reading scammers put in a bid to up their game. So, why can't regular people also do same and shake off laziness at reading and in making their own research? A few number of us stumbled on this forum in our bid to settle our curiosity.

Quote
Avoid referring the forum to friends and even family who we know have tendencies to become scammers, have affiliations with any known scammer, etc.
I ain't sure anyone who isn't a fraudulent would do that but we know how fraudsters and scammers snoop around to find information. They might be looking into one's devices when one isn't watching and then go search the sites out after they've memorized them.

Where ever we go in the forums or in the real world there are many scammers who actually want to us to be Their victims so we need to vigilant and double our security inorder to prevent such mistakes. Agree with this mate that those newbie account they are scammers it's look like they are not totally newbie for sure they are old scammers like what you said that maybe they got banned because of their doing then now they create a new account. And act like they are a new one. So everyone of us here need to double our security.

I've been wondering how are these scammers finding about Bitcointalk when some regular people have not yet discovered this forum on their own.

Do you know the duration of time, efforts and research some of these scammers are giving out just in other to ensure that they get hold of something new, learn and know some newest and latest information's they could use to offeror launch an attack, these people were virtually always online, checking on sites, roaming about and making findings, for someone to have read about bitcoin and cryptocurrency or scam in it, they would have been seen a place where articles concerning their research is being mentioned and discussed as such on bitcointalk, when a newbies is feeling reluctant of reading and learning new things about bitcoin than the tip of information's they once knew.

Avoid referring the forum to friends and even family who we know have tendencies to become scammers, have affiliations with any known scammer, etc.
And how exactly do you know that people we refer to have tendeinces to become scammers? You are basing that assumpion on what exactly?

This has to be one of the weirdest "advices" I have seen around here in quite some time.  Roll Eyes

Look if you don't know those who always have the intention to scam go more deeper in searching for places that talks about bitcoin, and forum is a place that is so popular when you google anything related to bitcoin here would pop immediately, they will make account after getting themselves familiar with whole environment they would decides on the easier area where to scam people.

Scammer can spend 48 hrs reading to discover how to scam people, okay come to think of this have you ever imagined how they would build a website that will be paying people 10 percent daily and also, have you checked the rate of people who jumped in to use it.

Like people are too lazy when it comes of making findings and minding the sets of website to go do their investment, everyone just wanna seat at a place and let their money generate quick money for them without know that they must undergo series of studies before having to trust any website.

So it's to those who come here make an account start telling people about wallet recovery, naturally you and I knows that those things are just a common way to get people trapped into their shady games, and only newbie like them may likely fall victim of their scam because I know those reputable members can never try any shit with those cheap scammers.

I know some scammers are intelligent people who read a lot and can discover this forum from their research while trying to gather information, but it is possible that some of the people we are referring to the forum are scammers, and we now also have to be careful of the people we refer to Bitcointalk.
I've seen a lot of accounts banned due to fraud, including those from higher ranks as well as beginners. I'm sure that these individuals would have made another account and invited their friends here, so I don't think the problem of scammers is new to this forum.

You make a valid point, but not all of our friends or family we know that they are into this act, so what do we do when they ask us to link them to a website where they can learn more about cryptocurrency? Because in my view, this is the best place to learn about cryptocurrency.

Where did you see accounts banned due to scam? In this forum, scam is no moderated and I am not sure anyone has been banned because of scam. The punishment of scammers is red tagging and not banning of the accounts.

Talking about Op, some people are not scammers but in the way of life they can change to be scammers. So, how will such a condition be handled, if someone you genuinely introduced to this forum turns scammer.

Well, scammers are smart enough to find this forum. And if they will find it hard to scam the forum members, then probably the best solution is learn to enter the forum as well and join the forum discussion. So it’s not surprising anymore that the one we accused as scammers are definitely the forum members as well. If we won’t be cautious and wary of our actions and posts, then scamming will never be far possible to happen.

As a collectibles sub nerd for nearly a decade...we get noobs (day 1 noobs) who say stuff like "been just lurking for years and decided to sign up today".  It's kinda creepy, but an important lesson in privacy.  I won't go in to detail, but Loyce always stressing privacy to me...well, I get it. Fully..now  Angry   Scammers can get much about you without the need to sign up too, and they will find this forum, that you can be sure of.

I have a difficult task when scam busting/showing findings in that it's a catch 22...good for the community, and bad.  Both helps and simultaneously teaches scammers.  ( I like to write them little vulgar love notes from time to time at the end of my posts, as I know they are always watching closely).

This is false. Which account do you know that’s been banned because of its involvement in a scam? I find myself repeating myself in several threads. Is it that members do not realize that scams are not moderated on the forum? No one gets banned for scamming or promoting a scam. DT members are obligated to give a red tag to these accounts making them useless in respect to participating in business deals, signature campaigns, contests e.t.c.

We should not but scammers will always look for a place to scam because a scammer will always scam and they always get better even if they are busted they will learn and be better, we read in the media that one scammer was caught and he has pending cases of scamming in the past.

It's our duty to protect this forum clean but we cannot stop people from joining and using this platform to scam people so we have to be aware of the character that we refer, scammers will always come here even if they fail or busted because they know that there are newbies who easily fall to their trap so we old members should expose these scammers when we see their offer as something dubious.
