I have been thinking about how I've been reading a lot of topics from scammers who give themselves away easily by saying they recover bitcoins and I've been wondering how are these scammers finding about Bitcointalk when some regular people have not yet discovered this forum on their own.

I know some scammers are intelligent people who read a lot and can discover this forum from their research while trying to gather information, but it is possible that some of the people we are referring to the forum are scammers, and we now also have to be careful of the people we refer to Bitcointalk.

Avoid referring the forum to friends and even family who we know have tendencies to become scammers, have affiliations with any known scammer, etc.

Haven’t you also have a thought that the scammers are or might be regular members already in the forum?. The forum allows the creation of alts so once a member decides to go into scamming they can just easily create another account and advertise their products. So to me, the biggest number of this scam accounts are members that are already here

Also I don’t second the idea of you not guiding people to the forum because they will scam. This forum could be the only place they get authentic information about cryptocurrency and should they later involve into scamming you can as well report the account

I've been wondering how are these scammers finding about Bitcointalk when some regular people have not yet discovered this forum on their own.

Same way most of use found our way here, "the internet". I don't believe it's the act of introducing others to the forum that attracts scammers. Instead, they find their way here through the internet. They aren't just on BitcoinTalk, but also on all social media platforms. Most ordinary people who haven't come across Bitcoin aren't interested in it or cryptocurrency. Meanwhile, those interested but not on this platform likely lack information about it.

Many people are aware of Bitcoin but don't see the need to create an account. That's why you often see new accounts asking important questions and then disappearing. So to answer your question it's unlikely that those referred here turn out to be scammers. although some may be spammers joining for signature campaigns. However, scammers manage to infiltrate every platform.

Where there is money, expect scammers to lurk around, too. Bitcoin is value. In this forum you can make lots of money through different deals, trades, services and carrying out tasks. So I am not surprised that we have so many scammers here, and it is not just Bitcointalk. They are in other forums too, and it's even worse in some. At least here in Bitcointalk we do have the default trust and flag system.

I don't think there is always someone introducing new scammers here. Most of them are probably old scammers who have been busted, and they just create new accounts.

if they are a scammer and know Bitcoin, it'll be most likely a matter of time before they hear about bitcointalk so I am not really surprised when a scammer stumbles on this forum.

Avoid referring the forum to friends and even family who we know have tendencies to become scammers, have affiliations with any known scammer, etc.
I don't think I can do this, if they ask me where can they find information about Bitcoin I'd probably recommend bitcointalk to them.

Most of them are probably old scammers who have been busted, and they just create new accounts.
yeah, you are probably right about this.

Recovery scammers particularly goes through the internet's nooks and crannies to spam their script as there were times I found their ass on obscure websites lol. I'm guessing a lot of them are just bots.

So I'm not surprised they found their way here on bitcointalk.org. It's not mainstream, yes but the forum is popular and gets a pretty good ranking in searches.

We can't stop scammers from having accounts on this forum or getting here through the Google search engine and that's why any attempt to not recommend this forum to your friends and colleagues
would be an attempt to stop them from learning about Bitcoin.

We don't really know who's going to be a scammer and who's going to be a good and reputable member of the forum in future. That's why it's not going to be helpful to stop someone from learning about Bitcoin through Bitcointalk.

The ones who have scamming mindset and try to scam the members of the forum will get tagged and the ones who have awareness regarding scammers will never fall for their scams. I believe we should not prevent someone from knowing about this forum.

I know some scammers are intelligent people
I don't think they are intelligent. An intelligent person will never live a life of a scammer. He will find a way to bring bread and butter in a legitimate way so that the business can sustain for longer term and make a positive impact for him and his family.

I don't think this forum is really unknown, they're looking for "Bitcoin" so if they search "Bitcoin forum" on google, most likely this forum will appeared on the first list. Either experienced users or new users who have an intention to scam, both of them have a same chance.

I didn't mean to support scammers, but even though there are many scammers that offer Bitcoin recovery, the people who get scammed by recovery service is really low compared to other scams (most of them are complaint to casinos).

Sometimes people fall for very obvious scams. It happens all the time. Just because you see through these scams doesn’t mean everyone is capable of doing so. There are many people without proper education or experience who read bitcointalk. These people will believe whatever they are told.

“Hey, have you got scammed? Too bad. You are lucky doe, I can save your funds. Give me 0.1btc and I’ll get your funds back to you in 24 hours.”

Boom.

A proposition like this exploits the weaknesses of the victim. He plays to his desperation and then providing fake a hope and a solution. (For a price)

Some of these victims might think it is the same guy who stole his funds. So they believe these scammers, only to get scammed one more time.

OP, you may want to ask a slightly different question. How do people who fall into the hands of scammers immediately after being scammed find and come to this forum to complain? Why don't they think first? Therefore, no matter how much you protect stupid and naive people, you cannot save them from their own stupidity. If you are a reasonable person, you will not fall into the hands of scammers; if not, then this should not bother the forum. This is not a primary school.

Don't underestimate those bastards they might already know your name and email address. People who are good in social engineering become more and more better based on the number of their experience from scamming. That's why those bastards evolve and get more information the more they interact and wants to make their first victims.

I believe scammers are lazy bastards. They can't do a job or work to earn a living but instead, they think of scamming others and eating what they their money that they have earned with hard work and dedication. They might not be intelligent, but they practice a lot which makes them good enough to pull off the scams on vulnerable people, make them face an experienced person who has quick thinking abilities and they would get shit for their tricks that some people consider intelligence.

They target vulnerable people because they know they aren't going to get anything if they try to scam people with knowledge, so they always look for weaknesses among their preys and then trick them with their words and actions which can be obvious for someone smart but aren't for someone who doesn't know much about these things which is the reason why they get success.

Most scammers are indeed smooth-brained and low IQ, but a few cases stand out as deviations from the norm. For example, Bernie Madoff comes to mind. In his case, though, everything started out as legitimate, but after he stopped being able to produce genuine returns for his clients, he decided to turn full scammer, just taking the funds from new clients to pay the old. Madoff is indeed simple an exception to the rule.

The whole thing reminds me of a quote by theymos:

I have been thinking about how I've been reading a lot of topics from scammers who give themselves away easily by saying they recover bitcoins and I've been wondering how are these scammers finding about Bitcointalk when some regular people have not yet discovered this forum on their own.

They are doing what they are good at and I am sure many newbies will fall for such a recovery thread. We all are aware of multiple scams as we have been active here and have been reading them. That does not work with anyone new to the crypto and new to Bitcointalk. The only way we can reduce such scams is to report those threads to the mods.

I know some scammers are intelligent people who read a lot and can discover this forum from their research while trying to gather information, but it is possible that some of the people we are referring to the forum are scammers, and we now also have to be careful of the people we refer to Bitcointalk.

I agree but I also feel that some of those users are alt-account holders who have disguised themselves. The only way to counter these guys as I have already told is to report any threads that you feel are offering unrealistic services.

Bitcointalk is the oldest and most famous forum about Bitcoin. It is not the initial domain name for Bitcoin forum but it inherits user data base from original Bitcoin forum created by Satoshi Nakamoto.

You don't need to be a genius to search about Bitcoin and will be given resources, links that direct you to this forum, Bitcointalk.org.

I know some scammers are intelligent people who read a lot and can discover this forum from their research while trying to gather information, but it is possible that some of the people we are referring to the forum are scammers, and we now also have to be careful of the people we refer to Bitcointalk.
If you want to be an influencer and go around to make speeches and let people around you to know about Bitcoin, this forum, it's not bad. You must know about risk on yourself like life and your bitcoin, can be kidnapped, stolen, and more risk. If you accept such risk, go ahead with public speeches in your communities but you can not control what people do. You only give them information, be a kind person or a scammer, they choose, not you.

Quote
Avoid referring the forum to friends and even family who we know have tendencies to become scammers, have affiliations with any known scammer, etc.
It's very unrealistic. You can not know what they want to do and if they are scammers, they will not let you know their scam intention. Very few scammers will let people know about their plans to scam.

Haven’t you also have a thought that the scammers are or might be regular members already in the forum?. The forum allows the creation of alts so once a member decides to go into scamming they can just easily create another account and advertise their products. So to me, the biggest number of this scam accounts are members that are already here

I won't say the biggest, but a huge portion yeah.
I mean, common, let's just look at the history of this forum, how many trusted members have turned out to be scammers, breaking the law, not paying their debts, running with money, just go to the Scam section, read the format you need to report a scam, think of congratulating the member who wrote that sticky only to find out he has been arrested for card fraud.

When you see that much money changing hands around here, when everything is about money, money, and so on and you have way too little for their needs some will stop thinking of limits when it's about making some too.

The whole thing reminds me of a quote by theymos:

scammers are often pretty stupid

That's a bit of salt on the wounds of those who have been scammed.

Scammers go out of their way to find places they can easily find victims and make money. There are occasional ones who find themselves in a situation that presents an opportunity and take it, without having the intention to scam when they joined. But they mostly seek out were they will hit less resistance, a quickly rising asset with the impression that it is making people wealthy quickly is a great environment.

That's a bit of salt on the wounds of those who have been scammed.
Someone else could say 'those who were scammed were mostly greedy', but that is not a blanket that fits everyone.

Man, I don't mean this in a bad way but - the entire post was paradoxically opined  Smiley
[...]and I've been wondering how are these scammers finding about Bitcointalk when some regular people have not yet discovered this forum on their own.
You said this and I tend to agree with you, not until you wrapped it up;
Quote
I know some scammers are intelligent people who read a lot and can discover this forum from their research[...]
Just like you said, you know this already... Have you ever seen a person with a tattooed inscription/tag on the forehead that says - I'm a scammer, be guided? How's anyone supposed to know?
AFAIK, some people could play like the day-saver just to gain a couple of trust scores, only to get busted and revealed as the villian ... In this user's case, it was already too late!!!
