I've always wondered. Why does bitcointalk allow that garbage option. Unless you are aware of the risks or are using a company email it is such a stupid decision. You are allowing everyone to see your email...
And why does bitcointalk allow these 1990s 2000s ass options that no one nowadays ever uses. AIM: This is your AOL Instant Messenger nickname. MSN: Your MSN messenger email address. YIM: This is your Yahoo! Instant Messenger nickname.
I understand that this forum still has the old old form theme and I respect that very well, which also makes this website unique. Respectfully though, I am confused as to who uses "instant messenger nicknames" in 2024. I hate yahoo and aol because they delete old inactive accounts but it is what it is, rules are rules.
I'm glad you guys allowed 2FA too somehow. It's a smart security option you people added here which is good that I was surprised was even added knowing this site when I first saw it.

This has been discussed before, however one of the administrator had replied to this proposal Re: [proposal] Update Profile > Social Networks ICQ/AIM/MSN/YIMAlthough we don't see anything change right now, but we might see it later, having @PowerGlove make the UI in this forum improved. You are allowing everyone to see your email...
Correct, now I see your email which is the name "hidden".

Correct, now I see your email which is the name "hidden". Damn, so that means if I ever visit this website in the future the UI will most likely be changed. I personally didn't mind it. Thanks for informing me about it. I've never enabled that feature due to how weird it was. I just don't see it being useful at all unless they're using a company email or are aware of the risks.

Telegram, discord and reddit are among the top most used social handles for crypto users and are also anonymous (except discord which can be a hassle to get around without including phone number) so one can easily brand them around their forum moniker and those offering services will but need to find other ways to include their contact details. This is however not a immediate need, there are ways around it and as the 'then' admin pointed out, it will not be so easy to do. I've never enabled that feature due to how weird it was. I just don't see it being useful at all unless they're using a company email or are aware of the risks.
There is you answer. Whenever there is an option that can be toggled on and off its usually because there are those that'll need it and those that won't. The security risk is also why it's off by default.

And why does bitcointalk allow these 1990s 2000s ass options that no one nowadays ever uses.
The forum works on SMF version 1.1.19. released Dec 3, 2006. The next version 2.0.19, was released on Jun 11, 2011, In the meantime, Bitcointalk was built and the Btt admin made many changes and customizations. Every further update posed a risk for the non-functionality of the adjustments made until then, so many things remained unchanged

One thing I don't understand is that I see a couple of forums using SMF software as well like (altcointalks and Bitcoingarden) but the interfaces seems a little more appealing and “modern” compared to bitcointalk. Could this be more to do with customization, or just the different versions used?

Once upon a time, I dealt with SMF administration and as far as I remember, it was only a skin. Current on Bitcointalk was the default for this version. It is possible that a later update and newer versions brought a new "modern" look. Although honestly, after using altcoinstalks, switching to this forum is a kind of rest for the eyes. Too many icons, badges, empty space... The least amount of space and arrangement is dedicated to the posts themselves, i.e. the content inside.

I remember I suggested modifying these icons in 2020, a long time without getting anything. Does anyone know what BTT development roadmap is for this year? Or what updates can we expect, or will the situation remain as it is?

2FA does not secure your account like a magic tool and your account security will depends on many other things of your practice. It's good to have 2FA for forum accounts but the warning is, 2FA is not save you from all threats. About suggestions to remove, add icons, I agree that old icons for applications which are now dead, less used should be removed. Then it should be edited to new ones but I have my warning too. Linking your forum account to other accounts like email, social media and more, will bring more risk. It can be harmful for your privacy. You must think about it before linking them together. I don't know it is reason that forum admins did not want to do this or they have other reasons.

This "ineedhelpplease" account started off as a newbie alt-account complaining about Rollbit and then morphed in to a nuisance account. It is not that rare or strange to see an attention-seeker seeking attention by creating threads by proclaiming ignorance even though have been around this forum for far longer than they let on using other accounts, I do occasionally wonder about their long term intentions.

I think that such things are at the bottom of the list of priorities for the admin, so even though it would be logical to remove what no longer makes sense, on the other hand, there is no harm in them still being present. I think many are interested in the situation with the new forum that was announced a long time ago, but it is something that can happen in a few months, but also in a few years.

That’s the use you might have given little importance right there. For what is worth, the forum tries to be accommodating of everyone’s purpose and intentions given what might be from what is which makes, some functions activated by default and others require a self enabling. By defaults emails are hidden as this could serve as a point of contact by just anyone and that includes those with malicious intent as per account hacking through sending spam mails with malware. Hence, your mail address remains hidden to everyone and many users opt for a telegram link for a line of communication rather than using mails though, few users still do, I’ve seen a few in the past but, can’t go about searching looking them up.

I disagree with altcoinstalks being more appealing than bitcointalk despite it being a bit more "modern", and there are several reasons behind that. Bitcointalk forum has a lot of features and modifications that make it way better than it is. Altcoinstalk doesn't even have proper placement of ads, and I was surprised to see that, to be honest. There are ads placed in between the posts in a thread looking just like a post, and I don't like that at all. Another thing is the post-writing interface which I know is adjustable but it would be more convenient to have a bigger space as a default to write your post just like we have it here. It doesn't have features such as marking the creator of a thread/topic as OP and it makes it confusing when you are not on the first page of a thread which is a great feature we have in Bitcointalk. I can go on and on but I think these points are enough, so, Bitcointalk is much better than any other Bitcoin or cryptocurrency forum out there.

People have brought this up a few times over the years and I believe the last time it was discussed we ended up getting Bitcoin address added to the list of identifiers on someone's profile. I also added my PGP signature in the event someone felt the need to send me an encrypted message. I think PGP as an official option would be nice, but it is rarely used so I'm not too worried about it. I'm sure there are other more popular options than AIM or MSN at this point, but it could become an endless chore trying to keep up to date on whatever service people are using. Having a blank space you could customize might be nice, but you have to wonder if it's worth the effort.

The email stuff was something I wanted to know for months, it can easily be a serious security hazard if the user isn't too knowledgeable of the risks.
I will be making a proper response in the Reputation board later today or tomorrow as I am still investigating the full situation along with my life outside of Bitcointalk. But for now, let's start off with this. And here you are, falsely accusing me of being an alt again without letting me provide my proof to you in a civil manner. Really unprofessional dude. I am unsure of why you are calling me a "nuisance" account. I have never disrespected you until that thread a couple of weeks ago because I felt disrespected. As for your "I do occasionally wonder about their long term intentions." I have already made my intentions clear within multiple posts. My intent (which again, stated multiple times) was to get enough merits to rank up to be able to participate in the Rollbit campaign in order to work for my money that I lost back. You are a respected investigator on this forum, I am unsure of why you aren't actually investigating for small details like this. You also failed to investigate properly when you called me a JackpotRacer alt, because he RANDOMLY decided to copy and paste my text a few weeks later. P.S I still wondered why for a while as to why it wasn't removed already, hence this thread's creation. Thread will now be locked since the question is answered. Further discussion regarding your points will be made in either my current thread about you, or my new thread if I decide to make one. This time, it will be organized and respectful unlike my original thread, where I just saw everything out of the blue and got upset of how I wasn't notified about all this.
