They won't let Bitcoin die because it will justify more defense spending and they know that it requires more and more hashing to stay competitive.

To start with, I read Satoshi's White Paper. Where did it say anything about what you claim? It's one thing to presume that the military does it's job to look for any combat vector to keep the nation safe. It's not unreasonable to assume what you claim. So why the hostility? Well actually topic starter is not wrong. Governments ARE using virtual environment to reproduce real life scenarios. Bitcoin is the alternative to the real money so they are definetely working with it.
