I vaguely remember reading this old thread from 2011-2012 probably(it could have been even earlier and i just read it then) Where some guy talked about how he through his company early on mined a ridic amount of coins, I remember it as several hundred thousands but could have been tens of thousands.
He then said the company gave up on it and let him buy it for scraps, and then later when btc shot up they had a dispute. If my memory is right he had receipts in the form of screenshots.
I've unsuccessfully searched for that thread a few times but I'am sure someone on here remembers, just curious if there ever was an update or if it was true at all. And why I've never seen it mentioned since

I don't really know much about that kind of company as I was not part of the forum back in 2011 but men you came here only to ask that who can share a thread with you that's 13 years old? Out of curiosity I want to know that what made you to search for that company or its thread, or the person who posted it?

Cloud mining is most often a scam and everything you've heard and read is fake. Of course, the scammer will talk about how he made a huge amount of money because all this is to attract new investors/victims. You can find as many such stories as you want, and if you have extra money that you want to give to someone, it's better to give it to charity than to a cloud-mining scammer. It's 2024, and someone still believes in Santa Claus and cloud mining schemes.

This was pre 2011 so cpu mining times, you def could have rented somer servers and mined a lot of coins back then. If he did or not is what iam curious about. There wasn't as many scams back then those came later as money started entering the space..

Because I never saw it mentioned again, everyone loves brining up lazlos pizzas, Satoshi stash etc, but I never saw this guy mentioned, and I never forgot it because the amounts he claimed he mined were astronomical. I GPU mined myself back in 2011 so the numbers were nuts to me.

GPU become main choice in 2010 and FPGA become main choice in 2011. Besides, AFAIK CEX.IO was the first cloud mining in 2013. So i think you misremember.

I never said he mined in 2011, he made the post about his troubles with his former company in 2011. it was 100% a post, I didnt post about if the post happened or not, i remember that part. its the details and outfall i was curious about, i guess theres some chance it was deleted. If you werent active here back in 2011 you dont really add much to the question unnless you somehow found that thread after the fact...

Based on the post from theymos I searched the forum for information about this account. Maybe it really is the person the OP is talking about. Here is some information I found: Anyone know what happened to knightmb and his 371,000 BTC?knightmb on bitcointalk - from 371,067.36 BTC to Mitt Romney extortion.https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=6825.msg973679#msg973679If this is indeed the person the OP is looking for, his story ended sadly. KnightMB, a.k.a. Michael Mancil Brown Dumps Over 370k BTC
According to on-chain data, the total BTC holdings owned by KnightMB have been sold off. A Bitcoiner revealed in a tweet that Brown either spent or donated his total BTC holdings. He also created a so-called Timekoin cryptocurrency project. Brown was later arrested for blackmailing Mitt Romney in exchange for Bitcoin.
KnightMB’s last public hearing was in a 2016 court document detailing a lawsuit against him. The U.S. Department of Justice convicted Brown of six counts of wire fraud and six counts of facilitating interstate commerce to commit extortion.

The post on 371k is still there and you can try to dig for past posts with Wayback Machine. https://web.archive.org/web/20111101000000*/https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=6825.0 With an archive in 2011, the OP has less information than an edited post in 2012 by Maged. Who is Maged? and why Maged edited that post? I guess Maged used to be a forum moderator. Oh, I'm still alive and kicking. Yeah, still have them, though like was said, it would not be possible to sell them all at once and become an instant millionaire. No one is going to buy that many at once. I have kept my client running 24/7 since then though, managed to generate a bit more before the collective mining groups took over Without the massive server farm I had going before, I'm just down to my personal desktop, so it's never gotten over the 371k since.I do keep many, many backups though just in case

Moral of the story, when talking about cloud mining, sooner or later we have something about fraud involved. He may not have committed fraud at an early stage, but he ended up going down this path somehow. In any case, I don't see his story as that surprising, for those who mined in 2010-2011. There were few mining, and each block was worth 50BTC. Being able to mine 8k blocks wasn't so complicated in 2010, with a good number of servers. EDIT: But, probably, a large part of this number came from the fraud he carried out.

Ah, but you underestimate the memory and/or extensive knowledge of forum history possessed by some members. When I read your post above, I figured there was about a 90% chance somebody would swoop in and give OP an answer. You're thinking of knightmb.
Baziiiinnng!! Based on the post from theymos I searched the forum for information about this account. Maybe it really is the person the OP is talking about. Here is some information I found:<snip> Swiiiiing, battabattabatta, swiiiing! You guys rock--and Theymos, I'm not smooching your gluts. I don't suppose it's too off-topic to mention that there is some amazing reading from back in the early days. I spent hours and hours reading through posts from the 2010-11 era, and it was awesome seeing how bitcoin, the bitcoin community, and the forum itself evolved faster than the deadliest virus kept in the bunker of the CDC complex. For anyone who likes to read, go there and dive down the lagomorph tunnel; you will not regret it.

You mean this? I can't even view the topic Did you check op profile? His account is as old as 13 years now if am not mistakenly, so he is not wrong searching for such information. If it was a newly signed up account then the suspicion could hard stirred up many concerned but however, i don't think he would find such information here as i have also tried to search with similar explanation he gave but i couldn't find any.

Either way i guess we will never know exactly what happened, hard to belive someone trying to blackmail mitt romney one year, is donating houndreds of thousands of btc to wikileaks the next Edit: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=6825.msg123739#msg123739 here he explains how it went down and that they used amazon cloud as i remembered, also how he kind of scammed(questionable) his investor and bought the whole stash for 5k lol also wikileaks only ever got 4000btc ish to their public wallets, so unlikely he donated it there.
