Known for innovations like music players, TVs, and PlayStation, Sony is now venturing into blockchain. Their Soneium platform, an Ethereum Layer-2, promises to enhance the scalability and efficiency of Web3 applications.

Sony aims to harness the power of Soneium to elevate its current services. The company is exploring avenues to incorporate Soneium into the PlayStation gaming platform and other entertainment options. Sony has also forged partnerships with prominent blockchain projects such as Optimism, Circle, Alchemy, The Graph, and Chainlink. It's clear that Sony has invested significant time and effort into developing its Soneium strategy.

“We will work to create diverse businesses and new use cases with the aim of reaching as many users as possible with the customer value that can be enjoyed only with Web3 technology.” [1]

While a few other companies have launched their own blockchains, they haven't gained much traction [2, 3]. I'm interested to see how Sony will integrate Soneium into its existing businesses and whether developers will use Soneium to create innovative new dApps related to Sony's areas of expertise.

This could be a significant step forward in the adoption of public blockchains at the enterprise level with high transparency. I don't think Sony will introduce a new token; it's more likely to function similarly to Base. NFTs could be used to tokenize assets or ownership, and it would be exciting to see if NFTs could be incorporated into AAA games on PlayStation.

I would like to know your opinion on this issue:
  • Will Soneium have its own native token?
  • Do you think Soneium can be successful and bring benefits to Sony?
  • Should companies develop their own blockchain or should they use existing blockchains in the market?

Seeing a company launch its very own L2 network on the ETH blockchain is certainly good news. I believe Sony is the very first company to come up with something like this (if I'm not mistaken). Launching a token for the "Soneium" blockchain would greatly depend on government regulations. They wouldn't want a fiasco with regulators if their token is classified as a "security". Would they? Sony is going to need to weigh the benefits/risks of launching a new token. The company is better off using the native ETH token, imo.

It seems to me that L2s are the future. Companies will build layers on top of existing public blockchain networks for their own benefit. A network like "Soneium" will be centralized for sure. But that won't affect the main ETH blockchain in any way. At least, this helps increase mainstream adoption of the underlying cryptocurrency. Whenever Sony's little venture will become a success or a failure, it's yet to be seen. I'd be keeping a close eye to it, just in case. Smiley

I'm sure sony won't miss the chance of creating token that might have FDV of billions and if they can have some share of it, I think they will just go on and create the token.

Honestly since it's created by sony directly I think it will be a success, even more so if they willing to integrate their L2 to their game store to comply with the act of digital game reselling that currently become a hot topic.
If you think about it and connect the dots it all make sense, NFT could facilitate this, instead of running a centralized database they could just leverage the blockchain technology and simply create L2, they could profit off the revenue from the fee imposed as well as creating a blockchain suited for digital goods identifier.

If they are really going into Blockchain technology creating their own native blockchain coin then Sony will really need a good developer to embark on that journey. Most importantly, the target of every L2 coin is to beat ETH in terms of transaction fee, scalability, interoperability and lots more, or equally they can consider building using Ethereum Virtual Machines (EVM) for easy completion.

Also, they should be ready to solving problems when other projects will be building on Soneium using their native token as transaction fee and all of that.

Nothing special... Most of those big corporations and companies are all about making more and more profits, so don't get too excited. We have seen some similar attempts in the past as well with little to no success, such as Facebook (now Meta) and that Libre coins. How far so far?

The first time I read this news, it made me even more bullish on Optimism ecosystem than before.

  • Do you think Soneium can be successful and bring benefits to Sony?
  • Should companies develop their own blockchain or should they use existing blockchains in the market?

1. Yes.
2. Yes, they must have ideas of benefits that's why they launched the chain, otherwise why would they?
3. Own branding looks better, and they can use already available infrastructures to create their own, just like Soneium used OP stack.

Businesses are created to make profit, isn't it? they see crypto as a growing industry and has the potential to become a big industry in the future, well, although we see that some of them (big fish) only give hope like Meta with their Diem project which has never been realized until now.

There's nothing wrong there, we just have too much expectations. Solenium is currently in the test phase (minato testnet), we'll see how they develop in the future and whether they can become serious competitors for other L-2 Ethereum or not.

This is what I'm curious about most.

I really want this to happen, no more unused game in my inventory after i completed it. miss the old days where everyone play using physical disc or cartridges and I could just put it on sale once i've finished the game.
the digitalization of things nowadays make things uncomplicated but also deprive us of the right that we used to have.

if the presence of sony's blockchain leveraging on ETH to provide such feature in their platform, it will be a massive step for gaming industry in general, and i'm sure it will be a success.

I don't think Soneium will develop their own native token whatsoever, as it is a second layer solution being implemented by Sony, it would be risky for Sony to issue a token like that. Authorities in Japan could take that native token as a unregistered security and legally prosecute Sony.
Though, I must admit it is interesting to see a company like Song to get involved within this kind of technology, while other companies try to stay away from it.

In my opinion, I would personally preferred companies not to issue their own tokens/Blockchains and use existing ones instead, their versions are more likely to be centralized in some way or not made completely open source.

1. That would be a legal nightmare that Sony won't be touching. I mean name one reason why they would want that. Even the whole chain is most likely result of a pilot program, and giant companies have those all the time. This means that they are looking into web3. Most likely people who gave agree to look into it don't have a clue about possibilities and challenges of it, project team leader wanted to make it ethereum L2, because eth has most potential. I however doubt that Sony itself would integrate to this in any meaningful way. It now depends if people want to use this, and what will they build.

I am not shooting this down, as they had ton of resources to put into this, so i am waiting what people can build into that.

And about your link references:

A. Samsung doesn't have their own blockchain, They have just named a wallet on their phone as "samsung blockchain".
B: IMB Blockchain has nothing to do with cryptocurrencies

Nothing special... Most of those big corporations and companies are all about making more and more profits, so don't get too excited. We have seen some similar attempts in the past as well with little to no success, such as Facebook (now Meta) and that Libre coins. How far so far?
Ooh wait, HTC even promised as a phone that run their own blockchain, what's the latest  Grin

Of course. It's all about making money. Why do you think many startups and companies use the term "decentralized" so much? Because they want to attract crypto/Blockchain enthusiasts and investors into their little projects. But it's all a buzzword, as most of the projects turn out to be utterly-centralized.

This new venture from Sony is just an attempt to cash in on the crypto/Blockchain hype. Whenever the chain will be a success or a failure is yet to be seen. If Blockchain is indeed the future, I'd expect other companies to launch their own L2 solutions in the long run. It's so much better than using an existing public blockchain network (L1). Less network congestion, and greater control. Facebook's Libre/Diem project failed because regulators and banksters were against it. They've wanted to launch a stablecoin, which was often viewed as a direct contender against the US Dollar. Sony's "Soneium" Blockchain doesn't have its own token, so it's safe for now. Who knows what surprises we'll find in the future?

I don't see anything new? or anything integrated that would actually improve their services or the experience of their users. In the first place they're acting like web3 was something that had a web3 only userbase but no lol, any web3 users are probably users of your regular ol web, if there's any actual difference. Not to mention that they probably won't even touch the D from decentralization, let alone decentralization itself.

Personally, I don't think big companies need to touch blockchain. I don't see any reason for them to do so lol. I'd much rather they improve their damn services instead really.

Probably the primary reason is money if they own the nodes and develop the chain then they would earn most from the transactions fees and they have the leverage on when to sell or hodl the coins/token.

I agree. And hype around it is also gud for them, of course.

Is there any news about the areas of use of this token?

Has Sony leaked if they will be tied and usable in their gaming ecosystem?

sony's interest in developing blockchain technology on a corporate scale is a very good thing, because sony is one of the big global companies and has been involved in various industries and is able to produce the best quality products. what they do may encourage the development of blockchain technology to be even better and it may be followed by more platforms, and it is possible that other big companies will also follow in sony's footsteps, either creating blockchain technology or using existing technology.

  • Do you think Soneium can be successful and bring benefits to Sony?

success or failure depends on how sony develops their blockchain technology. because many large companies have developed blockchain technology, but in the middle of development they abandoned it for whatever reason. so let's just see how sony develops their blockchain technology and how it can benefit them.

Totally. Innovation should lead the way, as well as optimization. If these won't be the corner stones of the blockchain - it will lack in funds as well as in attention, in my opinion.

Indeed, Sony is a big industry, so they make blockchain a part of the user, and Sony sees all of that as a big opportunity for the future, even so they have considered it carefully, yes, we will continue to see the developments.

from the news

their statement might imply that sony is trying to create new business with web3 technology, so there's no confirmation whether they will utilize the blockchain for their gaming ecosystem.
but honestly if they find utilization in their own blockchain there's bigger possibility that they will integrate it to their gaming ecosystem.

at that point when they already have their own blockchain, integration is piece of cake.
