Sending PM to Self

I don’t know if a thread of this nature exists or perhaps it doesn’t because it’s of little or no significance but, I find it odd for the function of having to send PM to yourself is actually allowed on the forum. Don’t know if some of you have experienced this but, I just came to that realization today haven’t tried sending a pm.

What happened was, I received a pm, had to reference an earlier pm that I sent out myself, eventually clicked on “reply” which I feel shouldn’t be there while going through your inbox, quote maybe and perhaps, it should have a redirecting link to a person of interest objectively, the earlier person to have received the first pm.

What happened was;
My username did come up in the recipient box (To: username) and just like that, without having to notice it earlier, I did end up sending the pm to myself.

What you can do;
Of course I can go back and redo everything, making the necessary correction of putting the preferred username in the recipient box but,

I think this shouldn’t be allowed to go through by default.
It might be useful in having to create like a draft but, that too exists and as such, sending pm to self seems odd and shouldn’t be.

R

I have mistakenly had myself as an added recipient to a message I planned to send out. It's a minor inconvenience, but not something I've run into often.

If there's an easy fix for this to prevent sending messages to yourself, I'm all for it.

It might be useful in having to create like a draft but, that too exists and as such, sending pm to self seems odd and shouldn’t be.
I don't think anyone uses that feature to save drafts.

Your observation is right but think of it from another angle which is allowing users to save useful information in the forum. For instance, users can find some useful links but might not want to lose them, so he can simply send these links to himself and they will be there in the forum forever and easy to retrieve either through the inbox or outbox tab. This may not make much sense but I feel its just one reason self pm could be allowed.

To be honest, I've also sent pm to my own account multiple times as mistake, I believe someone should create a patch so sending a pm to ones own account should be disabled.

What you can do;
Of course I can go back and redo everything, making the necessary correction of putting the preferred username in the recipient box but,

To start with, i hope you know this is firstly your own fault, because you failed to verify the message before sending it, that is why it is very important that whenever we are making any post, we should proofread it before posting or sending to the target recipient, but many don't have this kind of patience being satisfies enough for them to proofread and confirm before sending, though i may only go with the suggestion of a prompt button asking that are we sure we really want to send a message to the recipient or not, through this, we can be aware of any mistake being included.

Never made such mistake though
I make sure I crosscheck recipient section before sending
And No I don't think it's anything that should be corrected
It can be used to save certain links or threads for easy access and not to mention even whatsapp and some other social media make use of such function.

I think this shouldn’t be allowed to go through by default.
It might be useful in having to create like a draft but, that too exists and as such, sending pm to self seems odd and shouldn’t be.
Most chat apps have this feature, send to self, some use it for notes and reminders but that's not necessary at all also it's not necessary to remove it for such reason just because you haven't notice your username before sending. You should double check anything you enter to that textbox or you will end sending confidential info to someone else, although people recommends not to use forum pms for confidential and private info but some or few of the users still do that.

Why should it be disabled? I see it to be not that bad. Just do not include your username and you will not send the message to yourself. If you mistakenly do that, you can immediately click on the remove or delete to delete itfrom your inbox. But I see it good and not bad at all. Even you can send bitcoin from one address back to the same address. For people that does not like this, it should not be a problem.

Never made such mistake though
I make sure I crosscheck recipient section before sending
And No I don't think it's anything that should be corrected
It can be used to save certain links or threads for easy access and not to mention even whatsapp and some other social media make use of such function.
I also agree that it is not that bad and it can be left how it is but I do not think it is that useful. Before the message is sent back to him, his username is one of the recipients that he sent the message to. That means the message will also be saved on his outbox.

Although this forum is old, as said by @PX-Z, most social messaging platforms these days are implementing this feature that allows users to send messages to self and it's pretty useful for you to have a space where you can quickly save things that you can use either at that time or later. This feature is also good in helping you save certain information that you might need to use on another device. You can simply log in to your account on the other device and you have your stuff saved in your PMs, it shouldn't be sensitive data though. WhatsApp has this feature nowadays, and it makes it pretty convenient for me to transfer something from my phone to my laptop because all I have to do is send it to myself on the phone and open WhatsApp on the laptop, and ta-da, you don't need to find a service that allows transferring data from one device to another.

However, since this forum isn't comparable with other platforms and things should probably be different since it is different in itself, I suggest we make a small change instead of removing the whole thing. Like, maybe add a warning text when someone is sending a PM to themselves. Let me explain what I'm trying to say:

So, if I'm composing a PM, and for some reason, I have my username either in the "To:" or "Bcc:" textbox, when I press the "Send Message" button, there should be a warning displayed under the main textbox where we write the message, saying, "You are sending a PM to yourself. Please press the 'Send Message' button again to continue.".

If the user has their username added by mistake, they can remove it and then send the message, or if it's done on purpose, they can go ahead and press the button again and the message will be sent.

Well, it's just an idea. I would recommend you make this suggestion in Little things that bug you/me about the forum, I'm sure @PowerGlove would know better what should be done about this.

You can reorganize messages to reduce the chance of errors using Labels but the Inbox/Outbox system for sending messages needs a lot of updates. The new SMF versions have better message management so I think the final solution is to move to the new forum update (may not happen soon)

It might be useful in having to create like a draft but, that too exists and as such, sending pm to self seems odd and shouldn’t be.
PM here is Personal Message, not Private Message so it's not secure to save your Outbox PMs as drafts this way.

You can do this but I don't like to save my PMs for a long time, for privacy. Forum policy on PMs in Retention page.

To you it might not be that useful but for some persons it is to an extent. I have had a few links saved  using the self PM process just to avoid searching for it the hard way whenever I may need such link information. Initially I have had to save forum important forum links in save notes in my gadget but lately after discovering that such feature exist I don't get to do that all the time because of this very feature.

I have seen a few social platforms that has the feature and am sure if it wasn't that useful in their wisdom then they wouldn't see need to make it available. So just as it's not bad in same vein it's also kinda useful.

I just tried to send message to myself and it's working.

@OP, if you think this shouldn't be allowed because it's like draft and draft do exist, but draft has a limit to save 100 posts and it's deleted after 7 days. While send PM to self has no limit and it's not cleared if we're not the one who delete it.

So, I actually see send PM to self is a good feature.

I often send PMs to myself upon trying to reply. It's quite a bit of a hassle, of course, because you make a copy into your inbox instead of only for an outbox message. In common norms in messages you must not need to received a message came with your reply instead just a one-way view, on the other hand, you can have a copy of your message but could be in a limited time duration only if this happens in the patch just my cents.

I think this shouldn’t be allowed to go through by default.
You can add yourself to your Ignorelist (PROFILE > Personal Message Options) if you send yourself too many annoying messages Tongue

It's only happened to me when replying from my Outbox. When I do that, I get added to the list of recipients. You could even use this as a reminder to send a note to yourself.

Ive tried it before just to save something (something I dont wanna forget). I dont think this should be remove, like social media this is allowed to send messages to themselves. I dont know if this is like a bad thing but in my opinion its not a big deal if its retain such process with that.

Is that a bad thing for you OP? For me its not. Some hit it accidentally but I find it unnecessarily to remove off.

I find it odd for the function of having to send PM to yourself is actually allowed on the forum.
You can send an e-mail to yourself as well.

Quote
“reply” which I feel shouldn’t be there while going through your inbox
It is easier to code something to always appear, than to add exceptions. For the same reason, you have a merit button, around your own posts, even if you cannot merit yourself (by the way: self-meriting is possible, if you merit your own alt-account, but doing so will lead to lose of sMerits).

Why not? Sending a message to yourself is like storing draft e-mails.

Quote
I don't think anyone uses that feature to save drafts.
If you use a computer, then you can easily open just some text file, and have a place, where you can always save everything. But I guess mobile users may find it useful, to be able to save drafts.

Quote
it's not secure to save your Outbox PMs as drafts this way
It is secure, if you encrypt them first.

Quote
if it wasn't that useful in their wisdom then they wouldn't see need to make it available
It is the other way around: "removing" that feature is harder, because you have to put a special case in the source code. But if you implement just sending messages, then if you don't implement any restrictions, you will have the possibility to self-send a message by default. The same with self-merits: it is a special case in the code to disallow that, and if you will code a system, and don't think about self-sending merits, then it would be possible by default.

I appreciates the mature minds to have spoken from a contextual view on the matter, like I said, it ain’t an issue of any major significance since, you can always undo that which is done by means of an error and I did in fact made that error only the day before, haven’t been on the forum for a while.

Can’t say I was very pleased but, I understand for which purpose it could be used or prove advantages as well, which is, as draft. However, am well aware there would be a lot of uses whom uses a notepad for this purpose. Either way, it’s good to know your thoughts about how this would affect users on the forum but, I felt there wasn’t really a need as we can archive drafts by many other means as well.

i dont see this as a bug or problem at all
The first time when I knew it that we could send pm to self it was by mistakenly, But I find a positive think in this rather than any problem or bugs.

Before saying about the positive things I want to give an example like the telegram if we make search on our user name we can save messages as like a cloud store without paying any buck on self messaging.

So we can also use this as a feature, like I use it as a self-note for the bitcointalk forum and I mean I noted the important topics and the things related to crypto by pming myself.

I create a Label for that from the Manage Labels.  Grin

Here is the example:
