Your observation is right but think of it from another angle which is allowing users to save useful information in the forum. For instance, users can find some useful links but might not want to lose them, so he can simply send these links to himself and they will be there in the forum forever and easy to retrieve either through the inbox or outbox tab. This may not make much sense but I feel its just one reason self pm could be allowed.

You've made a very valid point. Ideally, it feels useless when the platform had an accessible interface of a user sending itself messages but coming to think of it alternatively, it's useful that users can use that medium to store valuable informations atleast to secure data in a private mode.
And it help users as reminder pertaining relative informations that has to do with the forum specifically and how to navigate through based on the convenience of the user.

So we can also use this as a feature, like I use it as a self-note for the bitcointalk forum and I mean I noted the important topics and the things related to crypto by pming myself.

I create a Label for that from the Manage Labels.  

The label is a brilliant idea! It's so simple, I like it.

You can add yourself to your Ignorelist (PROFILE > Personal Message Options) if you send yourself too many annoying messages

It's only happened to me when replying from my Outbox. When I do that, I get added to the list of recipients. You could even use this as a reminder to send a note to yourself.

Interested, what happens when you ignore other people's messages, do they disappear or are they highlighted? I tried ignoring a member's messages and no messages disappeared from my inbox

Nothing happens to existing messages, but you won't receive any new ones.

I don't think it's wise to restrict that area, it's just like when sending multiple mails to different recipient and if you include your mail you will also get that same mail. To me the reason is for general notice that even you who spent it would have to appear at their ends as recipient to mail where if others are quoting or responding to mail you will be activated as well. In short, that option is fine and shouldn't be removed because it also serves as draft maybe when you send a pm and Include yourself when the receiver claimed not to receive the pm you can directly quote it.

To be honest, I've also sent pm to my own account multiple times as mistake, I believe someone should create a patch so sending a pm to ones own account should be disabled.

I wouldn't have believed the OP so much if not read many of you claiming the same error exists but I still wonder how possible was it to be this common. We can't call this a bug but it's obviously a fault that wasn't so popular because one may do away with it. As the admin tries to find a lasting solution to it (if they deem it necessary) we can also work around it as it's easy to avoid such a thing. The best way I send my PM is to go to the profile of the user directly and follow the link or copy the username directly and paste it manually. These are not stressful to do, we can help ourselves out too.

As the admin tries to find a lasting solution to it (if they deem it necessary) we can also work around it as it's easy to avoid such a thing. The best way I send my PM is to go to the profile of the user directly and follow the link or copy the username directly and paste it manually. These are not stressful to do, we can help ourselves out too.

You don't even have to copy manually unless maybe you're sending the same PM to multiple users, then you have to add each recipient individually. Aside that, just clicking on the person profile or directly from any post they replied to you can message them directly.

I don't find this problem as a challenging one that needs urgent attention. Nothing harmful or bad if you mistakenly send yourself messages. I'm sure the admin knows about this already but didn't bother since it doesn't pose any threats. I have mistakenly sent myself PM too. There are more challenging issues that needs attention and not this but if solving this will show that the admins are listening to our complaints then I'm in support.

It happened to me few times to send PM to myself before, but I was not bothered much by this.
Some members correctly said that you can add your account to ignore list, but this can also be used as a bitcointalk reminder list.
I am still using good old reminders on paper, but I guess I am just old school

It doesn't feel useless, it's just how to:recipients works  you should be able to add any user including yourself... it now depends on the user to decide on whatever he/she wants to use it for, normally it's meant for bulk messages/notifications to alot of recipient but some will add themselves as rec. to quickly notice the message sent without having to open outbox thus outbox can be cleared ( if needed) and the forum already made it easier, you can just uncheck the 'save to outbox' checkbox before sending.

I use this when I send emails.

There are many reasons why it works  for me and millions of other people.

Now if you want to pay a programmer to disable this for you I would advise you buy some BTC and hodl.

There are times I read meta and some threads are really annoying.

Whenever I see someone ask to remove something I LIKE TO USE I post and mention that they should mind their business.

The new SMF versions have better message management so I think the final solution is to move to the new forum update (may not happen soon)

I have been reading this since I joined the forum. But I never had a chance to see the new SMF version that some of you guys talk about 
Every time I see improvement suggestions, someone comes up with a similar post in every other suggestion thread. I don't remember reading posts in the new forum software section since there are not many active discussions, and I barely understand those things.

The question is, when can we expect the new SMF version? Do you think theymos will install a new version of the current forum software after all these modifications? PowerGlove has been doing an incredible job fixing the forum glitches and improving some features.

Personally, I appreciate every contribution to an open end discussion, criticism even as it’s some of the means to shape a great subject matter but, I really wish it’s done by some means that is meant to teach rather than an outburst.

Like a couple of users having to describe what it’s meant for them and to highlight a few reasons given above;
/  It’s used for drafts
/  It’s said to suit better than draft since, it doesn’t get deleted after a 7day period
/  It’s a feature common in some of the command texting apps or programs (rephrased)

Did you ever make a 10,000 dollar sale using pm's, if you did you could used self pm's as part of your tax recording information.

BTW if I am on my cell phone I often use the pm as a data moving tool such I tend to be fat fingered. I can then check the pm for errors on a larger screen later on.

Now if you have a desire to not be able to send a pm to yourself be careful and do not do it. And delete if you do.

Did you ever make a 10,000 dollar sale using pm's, if you did you could used self pm's as part of your tax recording information.

In essence, this serves like a historical reference base for you, before or even after collating it into a ledger, using some spreadsheet or something, is that it?

For those that send marketing PMs having it sent to yourself safes you a whole lot if you want to preview, store a copy, so I don't think we have so much to borders around as regards to pms and it functionality, but also may be in the next forum update, before then having to manually input who get the PMs and wether you want a copy sent to your own inbox.

This exists in default.
All you have to do is to tick the send a copy to my inbox . It's available by default.

I don't bother myself much about pms as I don't receive them often. Campaign managers and people rendering services should be more interested in this.

I know that there will be reason for every function in this forum even though sometimes we do find some of them useless because we don't know their functions.

Just as you said, this function can be used by any forum user who have an important information to save, the user will want ti avoid leaven them in a draft because it will disappear after some time, but this PM method can help user to save any necessary information like links to threads they will always visit, and others so that they can easily access them without stress.

I never even come across the function before because it is something that have no important use to the general public, therefore, it is good that it is there, it can be your personal draft.

Well this thing does exist and so far it's there and we can't do anything but to manually be alert when sending a PM. But, after reading many comments especially that of Philipma1957, I believe the better solution should be to have an extra option via a patch for the ones who want to disable it and as default it should remain the way it is right now.
