As far as I know, not only does the government not allow gambling, but the people of the land of kimchi also have a very negative view of gambling. So I was not surprised by this news and even thought that this was a pretty light punishment for an employee caught gambling at work. South Korea is a pretty crypto-friendly country but very strict on gambling, so this guy's firing has nothing to do with crypto but gambling.

Not to mention, banking is an extremely sensitive field because it involves people's money, what if he is addicted to gambling and steals the bank's money to gamble? In my opinion, this guy deserves to be fired.

Wish story would be more full. South Koreans are not allowed to gamble, but foreigners can gamble in South Korea. Imagine how this story would look if fired employee was hired foreigner. I would also wish to know how exactly they found out he was a gambler. If he has used bank PC for gambling, that is inacceptable. If he has used his own mobile, then banks interference in private life in inacceptable.

When I was studying in university and passed practice in bank, was nearly impossible to do anything extraordinary with bank clients money for a regular employee. Higher bank stuff more rights and access, but they doubtfully would steal anything. So I would say that for a regular employee it is zero chance to steal and use money for gambling.

Even if you are a foreigner, in addition to government regulations, you also need to comply with the regulations of the bank/company where you work. You are their employee and you need to follow their rules, and with the anti-gambling culture in Korea, it is no surprise that banks would prohibit gambling.

Whether he used the bank's computer or his phone to gamble, it was the same, since he gambled during working hours, his superiors had the right to handle it according to company regulations.

Stealing money from a bank/company is never easy but for a gambling addict with no money to gamble anything is possible.

What kind of thinking is that that if you are a foreigner working for a company you are excused from their laws??? I do not think that is how it works. If you are working in the country, you are most likely residing in that country, a company from that country pays you, you also benefit from the country's taxes so why should you be excused from following their rules? I know people who work overseas and they are protected at most but they are still expected to follow most of the general rules and regulations in the country where they are working in.

Is there no better motivation than money? Lol. A person hungry for money will do anything to get some food.

Yeah, that's true. Although those regulations will be different depending on which country or company you are working with.

I do agree that it is the same if he used his personal or company device. It's about what is happening in his mind at the end of the day.

Having a gambling addict working for you should be OK, as long as they don't have any kind of access to other people's money.

What about the moment when you are at work, but has nothing to do? When you have done every possible task, but can leave and go home? Or when your next job stage depends on the work others do -  for example you wait for other employee to finish managing table and send you data? Usually, during such moments employees read news or scroll their social pages. That is also not very acceptable by employers, but they close eyes on that. If "reading news, scrolling social media = not working", and "gambling = not working", then why only in second case employee was or should get fired.

For example right now I am waiting for database to maintain data, so that I could export it to excel and work with it. It might take from 15 to few hours to complete. While I am waiting, I am reading this forum, but also I could open casino page and "wait" there. Should I be fired for that?
All employee duties are written in the contract regulations. Only there are specific definitions of what employees can and cannot do. If you do not follow this, the employer has the right to fire you. Therefore, I would strongly recommend reading it so that such situations do not happen later. Few people read such reading material, since there are too many letters written in it. And that's in vain. It was not invented for nothing.

That's a sign of irresponsibility, and that person can be a threat to the company, for example if I happen to have a company where we have everything to do with accounting, if I noticed that one of my employees is into gambling he will probably take some stupid risks in the future using money from the company, there are many cases of frauds like this from workers around the world.

I will surely sack him, even if you have a gambling addiction you should avoid gambling at work, you don't know who is watching, go home and fall into your addiction again, not at the office, you are risking your job it seems.

I believe this employee wasn’t fired because he was only gambling, I believe the main reason why he was fired was because he was playing CRYPTO GAMES, we all know by now how much Banks, Financial institutions and even the governments despise anything that has to do with CRYPTO, it’s like a major competition for them because crypto goes against the major thing they stand for, which is Centralization and so banks would expect some loyalty from their employees, so seeing one their workers indulging in crypto games simply means the person is a supporter of crypto, which also means he’s for them and at the same time against them. I believe that’s why he got fired, not just because he’s gambling.

Of course you would have fired him if you had found out about his addiction, apparently his mistake was that somehow it became known, otherwise he would have continued working for this company until now and it would not have been a problem for anyone.

Especially since it was mentioned that he never gambled during working hours and it did not harm his work in any way. I think that it is possible to combine work and gambling so that it would not be a hindrance to either family or work, especially if he could make a profit from gambling.

In this whole discussion of people's passion for gambling and the potential harm and problems that this passion can bring to a person, the important question is how the employer received information that his employee is a gambler. And here the ability to play in a casino anonymously immediately seems very important, which is not always done and sometimes entails negative consequences, for example, the requirement to de-anonymize according to KYC in the event of a large win. And many players, knowing in principle the negative attitude of others to their passion, would prefer to remain anonymous. And this would help this employee, by the way, and the employer would not have such information and, accordingly, grounds for dismissal too.

That is totally not banks business what I am doing with in my phone. That is a violation of privacy. How would they even find out that I am gambling on my phone? By looking on the screen? If that is ok, then it would be ok to browse my chats and phone call list? Absolutely not. An employee is not a slave that has no right to spend a minute to take a rest. Then everyone should immediately get fired as soon as they went to a toilet to get a cup of water.

For addicted anything is possible, but from my experience, to steal from bank, where cash is monitored by dozens of cameras, and UI wont allow to make a transaction to a random account without receiving a permission, is close to impossible. Imo the maximum what addicted can steal is money from his colleagues.

You are indeed right, a person has the right to be at least minimally distracted, the main thing is that he can perform his duties well and this does not affect the final result. If all workers are driven into a corner by an employment contract in which nothing can be done, then they will turn into slaves. It is very important that this line is not violated, because such things cause great depression among workers, which will subsequently have a very destructive effect on their lives. Maintaining a balance is the main thing.

An employer must evaluate employees performance at work and only based on that he can make a decision to fire or keep that employee. If the bank spied what employees do in their mobile, and that can be a reason to fire an employee, then clients should run from that bank. All starts from little things. That their inner incident became public. They could have fired him silently. If they spy on employees, then there is a chance that they can use other private data, for example customers account expenses, for their benefits.

Although it never harms the company or interferes with their work, it is still very risky to retain an addicted employee. However, there may be a special approach before deciding to fire him, such as whether he can change his addiction or not.
I have heard many cases where someone uses company money or uses money that is not theirs to gamble because of their addiction. Maybe at first it was okay when they still had money to play, but when their assets are gone, they will start to dare to use any money to gamble.

The thing is, banks hire and pay you to work for them, they don't hire and pay you to gamble at work and during work hours. If you want to gamble or do anything on your phone, do it at home during your break or anywhere else, not at work and during work hours.

If you were a boss, would you be happy to spend money to hire employees but they do not work hard and only spend time gambling during working hours?
Don't compare going to the toilet, drinking water... with gambling during work hours, that's pretty lame.

Whether it is customer money or co-workers money, it is theft and is taboo in the company. That is why every company has its own rules and regulations that employees need to follow, we need to take preventive measures instead of letting things happen and then trying to solve them.

I totally agree with you, and I think people who gamble and play in places they shouldn't are immature gamblers. And gambling at work or during working hours is a big mistake and is very risky to be dismissed dishonorably or get a severe warning letter, and the question is whether the person does not think about the risks that will occur if caught and this is the same as a gambling addiction that doesn't care where he is and the risks.
And I think other companies will do the same thing, companies that will pay you at the specified working hours that must be obeyed and also done well while working, and when working hours are ignored with bad things including gambling then the company will be angry. Gamble wisely without harming any party and gamble in a calm, comfortable and safe state so that you can enjoy the game well and not while working which I think you are required to focus on working.

When we work for other people or companies then there are written and unwritten rules that we should obey for the good of us and also the place we work, although maybe gambling is our right and privacy but at least we don't do it at work, because it will only damage our reputation and also the place we work, in my opinion, it is important to maintain integrity and trust in the work environment, especially in sensitive areas such as finance, because Employees who Engage in gambling in the workplace can pose a big risk and we even often hear and read news how an employee uses company money to gamble, so I think the action of dismissal and also blacklist the employee can be a solution and also a lesson for other employees not to do the same.

When we work for other people or companies then there are written and unwritten rules that we should obey for the good of us and also the place we work, although maybe gambling is our right and privacy but at least we don't do it at work,...

The logic here is pretty simple because,  although privacy in gambling is generally respected but using that privacy to gamble during working hours isn’t right, because being an employee, we’re paid to focus on work-related tasks, not personal activities like gambling.

Honestly, even if a company doesn’t have explicit rules against gambling at work, it should still be treated as an unwritten rule. Being pro, we inherently know what’s ethical and what crosses the line. It’s about understanding the moral responsibility to use work hours for their intended purpose, not for personal indulgence.

Pretty sure that this would really be that the main on why these companies or institutions would really be that trying out to get rid out of those addicted employees. Yes, they might not be doing something bad for thet company now or had done something wrong into their job but if these things will turned out to be that severe then this is where things do start out to get messy. They do already trying out to cut it off early via making up these kind of decisions. Yes, this might that sound injustice or not fair at all since not all people are playing gambling considered to be addict or cant be able to control themselves. There would really be still having those good handling when it comes into the activity that they are really that dealing into. Well, there's nothing we can do about it, if they will really be having this kind of approach on things and making up such decisions.

If I was a boss, my duty will be to provide him with work non-stop, and pay accordingly. If employee has done all his work, works 9 to 5 and there is still time till 5, but at the moment has nothing to do (or he waits for others to give him work), I would not mind if he would gamble at work. And comparing toilet and drinking water with gambling isnt lame (As an example, I can go to a toilet and gamble 5-10 minutes there). This all means being at work during working hours and not working, same as reading new, scrolling social media. If it does not interfere work result, why should it be not allowed? Most important, employees get paid hourly, or had a contract. Employer does not stand behind them with stopwatch and pay only when employee is really working.

People are different. One and the same job at bank different employees can do differently. One can do it in 30 minutes, other will struggle for 2 hours. But at the end they will get paid equally. This is not a race, where first to finish gets paid more. If job is 9 to 5, and employee has done all his work, the rest of his working time (in case new work appears) I would let him do whatever he wants that is morally acceptable and dont violate any rules.

Look, right now I am at work in the office. We dont have open-space kind of office, and I am alone in my cabinet. I am waiting a reply from foreign colleagues to my email, as well as waiting excel table with data from other colleague that is at my office, who went on a lunch while that table is generating. I have spent last 20 minutes doing nothing but surfing on the forum. Similarly I could have accessed online casino and play some simple games. It might turn, that till the rest of my working day, I wont get that table. My colleagues might not even ask me for any help, or there would be no tasks to do, especially since it is Friday and few hours are left till the end. I cant leave work now. So its preatty much boring atm.

Let's face it, what the judge did was a miscarriage of justice. If that guy was sacked based on the subject matter, it would have been a different thing but he was emphatically sacked for crypto involvement despite not being illegal in his country, these are two different things and this guy was not involved in suspicious acts, neither did he err in his responsibilities as an employee, so we should not drag it far.

Also, desperation is a different context that never showed in the suit. Gambling or not, employees are desperate on a daily basis, it is now left to how the establishment tightens its security not to allow unsuspected/unscrupulous employees to take advantage of it.

It's really hard to know without having all the facts, which I'm sure the judge had...

Also, yes, people do get frustrated, and desperate in many situations, but I guess you can know that it will potentially happen if you know that someone is a gambling addict.

I think getting fired for something like this might actually be OK...
