As a banker, getting involved in these activities presents you in an irresponsible light and worst still, your banking in a currency that the very bank which pays you is against. The court will not side with the bank if there’s no terms that backed the company to fire the employee. You can consider this case as high risk for the bank to have a gambler employee. Besides, how will the bank knew that he is gambling if doesn’t show any sign of gambling habits at work.

It also depends on the ability the employee has to manage money of the bank and whether they could misuse deposits of clients to gamble with them. Let us see the case for example of someone who works on a bank and yet, does not directly manages money, during that person's break time they could be gambling and there should be no problem about it, because there is no plausible risk for a person to make the company to suffer a substantial loss of money with their gambling sessions.
This that case the courts would have sided with the person getting fired and demanded the bank to economically compensate the victim.
Anyways, I am pretty much sure within the hiring contract of banks and any other big companies there are hidden paragraphs about gambling and other unacceptable activities which are not supposed to be partaken in during one's shift. Let's face it, what the judge did was a miscarriage of justice. If that guy was sacked based on the subject matter, it would have been a different thing but he was emphatically sacked for crypto involvement despite not being illegal in his country, these are two different things and this guy was not involved in suspicious acts, neither did he err in his responsibilities as an employee, so we should not drag it far.

Also, desperation is a different context that never showed in the suit. Gambling or not, employees are desperate on a daily basis, it is now left to how the establishment tightens its security not to allow unsuspected/unscrupulous employees to take advantage of it.

What kind of security are we talking about? What could this employee have done to make the management so angry at him? Most likely, this person crossed someone before all this. Just banal competition for a position. This happened to me. At my previous place of work, they simply wanted to force me out of my position and spread all sorts of rumors about me. Yes, it worked in the end, since the information reached the boss. Of course, this was all a banal lie, but who can you prove it to? This is how the modern world works. I had to deal with such a lousy team, where rottenness and cynicism reign.

Employees have enemies and at times those top people want them gone, and it could be for a light offence that was aggravated or for disloyalty. One of the risks when you are really just that depending into a single source of income or having that day job is that you can possibly be kicked out or laid off because of those common reasons. Actually if we read the link we can see that in the end the news about his crypto was overblown even though the charges were centered on gambling but in the link we can also see that this person was involved in an inappropriate lending case so it was actually quite natural when he was fired from his job.

Employees are really that easily to be replaced and we do know all of that on which it is really that easy to find someone who do replace if ever there's a vacant but there's indeed a point that if you are a worker whose really that having that high position and having skills then it will be that not ideal for the company on firing you up not unless if there are some serious misconduct or disobedience or other correlated things happen then it might pushed through but if the issues been raised were really that minimal or not something major then they might really be just that giving you some warning and wont be making out some direct decision on firing you up. A liability should be removed as soon as possible. That's the policy of most companies if they see an employee that's serving them as a liability. And with that, that makes them decide to put it simply that way and with employees that does something else during work hours, it losses them money even if there's no customer or sales involved to them.

This is probably a serious danger for Bitcoin as a whole, given the extremely negative attitude towards cryptocurrencies from traditional financial systems. So such a scenario clearly has a non-zero probability.

Having two, or better yet, several sources of income is the best insurance against a sudden scandal at your main job with subsequent dismissal. Any of us can lose our job, but we shouldn't blame the employer, because the employment contract (if there is one) has a clause that you can be fired at any time. In this case, the employee violated the rules that contradict the employer's principles, so we shouldn't blame anyone but ourselves.
And to protect yourself from such a situation, when after being fired you are left without money, you need to have some savings, at least small ones, so that they will be enough for a few months of life until you can find another job.
