Bitcoin or altcoins during bear market?

I have been in crypto since early 2022 and most of my time I have been investing in altcoins.

The only time I was buying Bitcoin was when it fell to bear market lows around $15k and I sold it all for more altcoins when it reached $30k.

When I first got into crypto, Bitcoin was $42k and I now realize had I just stuck with Bitcoin only during the whole bear market I would be a lot better off now at this current time as I now understand that Bitcoin pumps first in the bull run.

My current portfolio is +23% but had I been in Bitcoin it would probably be around +200%. There is however more room now for altcoins to grow for the rest of this bull run and I am still hoping to have a great bull run with my altcoins.

I got lucky with one of my altcoins that gave me a 30x return in the first quarter of 2024 but if i didn't have that then my portfolio would be a lot worse.

I am just wondering when the next bear market comes in 2026, would it just be best to dollar cost average into Bitcoin every week and forget about altcoins until the next bull run starts in 2028?

If you love trading or gambling, continue with your altcoins but don't regret it when you will be disappointed in these altcoins that you claim to be more profitable if you keep holding them. If you want a long-term investment for your future, then invest in bitcoin and grow your portfolio with DCA weekly or monthly and hodli for long. Majority of those altcoins when the next bear market comes might not be able to recover from the market.

I am going to hold my altcoins till the peak of this bull run over the next 6 months or so. They have survived the last few years so should be fine now as we approach bull run peak.

Once the bull run is over though ,  I will use my altcoin profits to buy Bitcoin.

You see this right here it is one of the main reasons why I will always say to investors that bitcoin is the only crypto currency worthy of been called an investment, Altcoins are just pure gamble you might have to buy many to get one right and if you calculate the profit from the one that pumped the money will be almost the same as
The entire money invested in all of the other coins without any profit. Bitcoin is actually the best to hold. If you had hodl bitcoin it would have been 6x from the $15k point now which might have been better than that 30x plus other losses

Yes the bear period are the best time to buy bitcoin and the opportunity will come again but I will advice you start DCA now this might be the lowest price you might be getting it

The key with altcoins is to be diverse , not put too much money into one.

I have this one that gave me a 30x and a few others that done 5x.

My worst investment is currently 70% down but because its not a big amount of money I am not too bothered.

I understand not all altcoins will see me profit this bull run, but think most will.

Had in been you have been active participating in much discussion since you joined 2022 you would have seen that most of the reputable people talks about bitcoin and I have also learned from them to hold for long term and maybe after bull run, I will have a pull back to start involving myself with DCA. I know like I have seen and join most discussion, DCA is the best approach to follow up with the market during bear run and we always forget about bitcoin focusing our interest on altcoin forgotten that altcoin respect bitcoin, that is to say; before anything happens to altcoin bitcoin must first experience significant surge in the market before reflecting to altcoins.

Your choice but that's 100% than the latter. I know people that are looking for their altcoin lottery ticket because you are so encouraged with how those social media influencers show how much they've gained with altcoins, memecoins and unknown coins that they've shared on their accounts. DCAing Bitcoin has always been the most recommended strategy ever since and you OP can prove that already if ever you just have DCAed Bitcoin when this year has entered. You're free to get some altcoins on the next cycle but prioritize your holdings to increase with BTC.

It's just the start of Bitcoin, and I have seen many people regretting why they did not adopt Bitcoin earlier. Now, when they see the price, they are willing to buy, but the price is too high. Somehow, this regret will not stop, nor will Bitcoin stop. However, if you are switching to Bitcoin again, then it's a wise decision. The best strategy is to do dollar-cost averaging (DCA) weekly or monthly and focus more on Bitcoin because when the bull run starts, all the previous losses are recovered in this run. Instead of waiting for the 2026 bear market, you can start your DCA from now, and by 2026, you will have a significant amount of Bitcoin, which you can hold for the next bull run.

You were lucky to be able to buy into Bitcoin when it was at $15k, but then you got unlucky by converting your Bitcoin to altcoins when it reached $30k. You probably thought altcoins have a quicker growth potential, so you can quickly get more profits. Still, you forgot that altcoins tend to have a faster drop potential as well, and when they drop, they can't regain their value easily like Bitcoin, but they will give you a hard time, and you have probably experienced that already.

This is why someone needs to have market knowledge before making any decisions so they don't regret it later. I would love to hear some prominent names in your collection and a valuable tip for you to avoid any kind of emotional influence never regret any decisions in this market if you start saying why didn't I do that and this the result could have been that and this you cant move forward.

Learn from decisions and stay calm, for the Altcoin season many of us are waiting bu honestly currently I don't have much in altcoins but I'm looking for some prominent ones to be accumulated with the profit booking amount from Bitcoin.

There's no good or bad choice because no one know the future.

If you don't want to have stress, go for 100% in Bitcoin.

If you go more than 50% of altcoins, you should prepare yourself if you didn't make money in 2028, even it's bull season.

However, if you feel not enough with gain in Bitcoin, you can diversify for holding at least 50% in Bitcoin and rest of it in altcoins.

A beginner should start his path in crypto with Bitcoin, this is the safest way to start. Altcoins also have good prospects, but I am almost sure that a beginner is not able to choose those few coins that can grow more than Bitcoin, and besides, you still need to have time to sell them in time, so as not to overhold and become their holder for many years. Bitcoin eliminates risks in long-term hold because each cycle it becomes more expensive, so if you just do not sell, there will be no losses, but with altcoins this will not work.

That would come after later I guess. The market seems to bloom in the past few months and we cant be sure how big was the pullback for this cycle. I think if ever bear market would come we wont be seeing bitcoin dump so hard since the US is kinda supporting now the bitcoin era and crypto. Its just a matter of time to see more adoption with the current leadership of Trump.

Hunting or waiting for the bear 🐻  market could actually turn out to be expensive...like you said last time out price dipped to the lows of 15K and today I really don't see us going there meaning those waiting to buy these lows might not even invest in BTC So simple solution is to jump in whenever the finances allow it and as suggested by others invest the DCA way to avoid looking at BTC being expensive,  bite on it based on how much you can chew.

As of BTC or Altcoin honestly,  my rules of investment is diversification and I wouldn't want to put all my eggs in one basket, so as a counter measure to avoid wasting money on switching I would suggest allocating 60% to BTC and the other 40% goes to Alts as you never know which hidden gem you might be hodling.

I think you should decide your position. I am confused whether you want to trade or you want to HODL. Advising your location will be easy.

If you want to make more profit in the short term then Bitcoin will not help you much. Because Bitcoin is not a get-rich-quick tool. You can enter into crypto trades or opt for short term investments for short term base profits. In this case the risk position needs to be clarified, the possibility of losing in trade/short term investment is high.

Bitcoin may be the most profitable to consider long-term. I bet, in long term plan no other coin will give more profit than Bitcoin. Even in the long run you won't see another coin as trustworthy as Bitcoin. Bitcoin may not be the best choice for you for short-term gains. Bitcoin may be the best choice for you to HOdL for one cycle (4 years) or longer.

Dont be decieived, even as at now, when you look at the market, you're going to discover that not all the altcoins are currently moving high with uptrend, there is more risk in dealing with altcoins just as the way their benefits is also being involved.

How are we going to be sure the next bear after the bull season is coming by 2026, there is no certainty on that, it could changed to be earlier or later, we may consider the market circle we may fall in as at that time before determining if such prediction could work or not.

Some people have the erroneous mindset that altcoins is where the money is because Bitcoin have become too expensive. So during bear market they prefer buying altcoins which they believe will give them high multiplier and by extension bigger ROI. Often they end up losing their entire money to altcoins because most alcoins never recover in bear market unlike Bitcoin that will always recover despite the dump. Just like now, Bitcoin is driving the entire market and have moved the most while some altcoins are still lagging behind.

Most people are always looking for quick money that’s why they do always go for altcoins, but if you consider the risk involved in altcoins, it doesn’t really worth it. Any profit which altcoins can give, then it can be gotten from bitcoin also, and you will be having peace of mind compare to altcoin investment, just that you will have to be patience. How sure are you that the next bear mark is going to be 2026? And how sure are you that next bull run will be 2028? We shouldn’t conclude yet on when the bear is going to start, but even when their is bear market, it’s just advisable to invest in bitcoin, because some altcoins won’t survive the bear market, and it might be the ones which you invest in.
