In my country, there is literally a word for money or gift given by gamblers. We call it ”balato”. When someone wins the lottery, many people would ask you for a “balato”. Of course it is just in all good nature but usually even just the neighbors will ask you for this. It is embedded in our culture to value community and give to others when we are blessed so when a gambler earns some good profit he feels the need to treat the people he knows.

Like I said, this is usually in good nature but I actually despise this “balato” culture we have. A lot of gamblers lose their earned money from doing this. I too would want to treat the people I love when I have the money but doing too much would result to money loss. It’s not being selfish, it’s just being smart.

If they know I won, then I guess I’d have no choice but to give them balato, it’s like a Filipino thing at this point. I’m not sure what other countries call it, but I’m pretty sure some cultures have a similar tradition, especially when it comes to gambling.

The good thing is, with online gambling becoming more popular, we can dodge those people asking for balato. Now, it’s more of a voluntary thing, you give balato only if you want to, not because someone’s hovering around expecting it.

Those that will care about me are my father, mother, wife and children. These are the people that really worth the money after me. But some other family and friends included in few cases but spend wisely. If I lose, no one will care, so why should I care if I win? I am gambling online. If I won, no one can know that win and I have nothing to give no one. It will just be like my normal way of life in a way that nothing will change. I mean it would be those that I spend for before that I will still only spend for.

We should totally do a research on this. This is like cross-cultural gambling stuff. If I were in your culture and won money from gambling. If people ask me for "balato", it would be a massive culture shock to me. In my country, no one has the right to ask of such money as long as they weren't the ones who gave you the money to gamble. You can even argue with them that if you had lost would they ask you of such? That question is enough to make them go away. Maybe we have a small semblance to it where you take two or three of your friends out to celebrate the win and drinks which is from a small portion of the winnings is on you.

That's part of our lives though, I mean there are free loaders and specially in gambling, if someone heard that you have a big win, sooner or later they are going to appear in your door and in a subtle manner, they might ask you for this free money, as part of your winnings. Yes, we despite it specially if the person will suddenly appear after you haven't seen him for a long time. But I guess it's the culture, specially if you people are really good by heart and wants to share your winnings or at least threat it as something that can help that person in whichever way it can.

Thank you for sharing this interesting cultural phenomenon with us. When I started reading your post I smiled because it was quite cute and funny, but by the end of the post I realized what the downsides of such a tradition are. And I share that you don't like it. I agree that this is not a fair tradition, because all its charm can be destroyed by one question: "Why should the winner share his winnings with others if he himself paid for all the losses along the way?" This is probably a feature of your culture, I have not heard of this before, but I know for sure stories when a person becomes rich, then a lot of relatives and acquaintances immediately appear around him, who want to borrow money from him and then do not think about paying it back for a long time, because they think that this person is already rich enough.

In your case, so that these distributions do not become detrimental, allocate no more than 10% of your winnings (if you want to share with other people). I am not too often treat others when I am winning because that will depends on the win money. If I get a nice winning and I can use some money to treat them, I will buy something and gives to them and keep the rest money for me. But as I am not winning too much and that is not a big money, I don't treat them and only keep the money. We don't have to treat other people if we don't want to especially for people who asks for the money because they hear that we win the money from gambling. That is why we don't have to tells them about our winning.

I will remain who I used to be in my community and can not give an excitement of my winning in gambling to change that.

I will show love to people I wish to either when I looses or wins on gambling as long as my stable source of income is flowing and I have spare funds off my budgets to help or share my joy with anyone as I am pleased.

I have not stil recovered from my lost on the casino houses so even if I have the opportunity to, then I will count that to be profit so, I don't think it make sense of the people in my environs would have taxing me to share that with them. Were where they when I have been loosing all those while?

No we don't have anything similar here in Italy. We can of course offer something to drink why not... but I will general avoid any info about a potential gambling win.
There are many many reason, anyone should be confident and understand why is important to keep privacy well protected.
Probably this is also one of the main reason, online gambling has been enough successfull even without "the atmosphere" of physical gambling.

This topic has been discussed several times already here on the forum concerning spending our gambling wins on family and loved ones. To me, I don't see anything wrong in doing that as it's an act of good will. When we give people we love, we shouldn't see it as a waste of money or anything. I don't know about the word balato, but we shouldn't make it compulsory as it's just a way of sharing love.. for me, I spend on my loved ones when I make wins and don't usually think much about it..

No I don't.

If you haven't contributed anything to my life, I owe you nothing. Whatever money I get from gambling is for myself and family alone. I see a situation where it causes conflict because If I share my money from gambling with you and it affects me because I am going to be left with nothing, then when I will wait till you win so that I can get the same amount of money as I gave you when I won. If I don't get it, it will result in fisticuffs.

Well no, if I win $150 I don't go around handing out, I can buy dinner at most but normally when I buy dinner it doesn't depend on whether I win in the bets or not.

Another thing would be if I won a lot of money in the lottery or something, like millions. This does exist, in my opinion it is a natural thing but it is not required to do it either. When I gamble alone at home and can produce a fairly large win, then I will enjoy it in the way I want, whether it is treating friends or not, besides that when I get a win with the gambling that I do when gathering with friends when doing it, then treating friends is a natural thing, but it doesn't matter if it is not done. It is more about ourselves who want what we want. Maybe the better thing to do is to hide the winnings, I do this but not with all my friends, there are still friends of mine who I tell if I win in gambling, namely my closest friends. And what my friend did was the same, he hid his winnings but still told me, this is probably done more by people who really trust someone.

There is nothing wrong with treating friends if they know you win a large amount, and most importantly they are friends not strangers. And I personally, I will do it as long as the rules of the place and also the food I choose remain under my control and only use a small portion of the big win I get, which I think is a good thing. well, this doesn't apply when you are gambling completely online. it's usually applicable in instances when you make use of a physical gaming Centre and relates well with fellow gamblers who might have at one point or the other shared some bet tips with you that might have also contributed in the victory you had in the game. like the OP said, it is not not a must that you have to give a portion of what you have won to people, it's always based on your discretion and even if you don't give them, it wouldn't matter much.

You are right, this is more of a choice than an obligation, besides, for example, if we win big in gambling and the winnings are actually only enough to cover all our needs, such as debts or others, but other people will not know that, they only see us at that time having a lot of money because we have managed to win big, I myself always share my winnings if it is more than enough, but when I have financial problems and win in gambling, I will use it myself for my own needs. I keep my gambling activities secretive from people and only my wife and my close friends knows that I am a gambler. If I win, my wife always know because I do buy her something from the money. My friends don't care about my win and any of them that was with me when this happens, I give them some money or take them out. For online gambling i never have experience win with decent amount because i did that for fun but i used to very often to gamble at cockfighting and i have enough experience for this game because i was involved to this game over than 10 years and i have to says my profit while playing this game is very good because i was quite often to win with huge amount of money even i still remember that i can makes approximatelly 20x from my initial amount of money on this game and if i won usually i would like to treat my family just like take them out to eat at a restaurant or if the money i win is big then i take them to visit a shopping mall and shop for things they like
