Quote
NGZ: Our Avalon Nano3 series has been highly successful, with over 10,000 units shipped last quarter. By the end of this year, we will be launching the Mini series, which can provide room heating with a maximum power of about 800W and is built using our latest chips, with a maximum hashrate of 40T. Ease of use, fun and practicality are key. From USB hand warmer miners with 140W power (which can be placed in front of the keyboard to warm your hands), to 800W space heaters and water heaters that can heat villas and provide hot water. Previously, these devices only converted electricity into heat, but now they can also contribute to the security of the blockchain by outputting hashrate.

Unless they have a built-in PSU, "Normal" power input is not going to happen. For consumer goods using a separate power supply EU regs require using USB-C for 5v @ up to 2A (10w) and for over 10W & up to 240W, USB-C PD which can deliver 5/9/12/24/48V up to 5A for low voltage power in connections.

This is an untapped market - the only options right now seem to be:

* Full power miners, needing 220v / 3000w, so unsuitable for normal homes
* Old miners capable of running on 110v residential power supplies (S9, S17, modified S19/S21 that are expensive)
* Tiny toy lottery miners that have little hash power and no heating capability

A mini heater consuming 800w and providing 40 Th/s would be awesome, and great for home use esp. for those of us in colder climates.

A 800 watt 40th miner  can be made to sell at 600 bucks maybe 700

so 1100 usd actually about 1180 after tax.

37 th and 800 watts.

plus a low power ? hash and 500 watts.

A bit pricey but  not terrible as a space heater.

Would be nicer a bit cheaper.

I can make a 525 watts bit chimney for around 425-450.

it does 20 to 27th

28 watts a th 20th

cost
a standard hash board = 125
a spoof chip                =   40
a plastic case printed   =   50
an epic controller         = 150
a bitmain apw3+         =   60
4 fans                         =  60
 cost =                           485

frankly I think the cannon/avalon is better

I built 5 of the bit chimney and we can't get the cases to look good enough

What options do you think are better for home miners? I’m tempted to sell off my nano and grab one of these to solo mine with. I’m a little worried that a bitaxe will be released that’s even better though as they seem to have better efficiency already with their current product line. What do you think?

I grabbed one of these (the Mini 3)! It was from a distributor which was listed at Canaan.io (Mineshop).

I see this one as a very interesting continuation in 800-1000 W power area home miner. Previous very common one in these was Antminer R4, and a lot of time has passed after that.

I plan to use my one for a solo 'lottery' mining.

I may even do a write-up for this,  which I haven't done in a long time. Smiley

the two units I see as best are the bit chimney or the mini 3 (have to read hagssfin write up to be sure)

I built 5 bit chimney units.

https://altairtech.io/product/bitchimney/

3 use a s19xp board
2 use a s19 board

the s19 bit-chimney  tends to be a bit too loud and kind of flattens out around 27th

the s19xp bit-chimney can do 33th and is a bit too loud.

I did not mod the psu beyond the 12.5 volt mod ( there is a 13.5 volt mod) but it ends up louder yeah it can do more hash but it is not quiet enough .

I can clock the bit chimney down to 15th and 400 watts it is fairly quiet then.

both the bit chimney and the Avalon mini can do regular dca mining

20 x 0.00000056 =  0.004088 btc in a year. bit chimney

37 x 0.00000056 = 0.0075628 btc in a year Avalon mini 3.  both will be 10-15% lower due to difficulty rise.

but if you set to viabtc.com and set withdrawl  to 0.02 btc it takes 5 years for the bitchimney and 3 years for the mini 3

more likely 6 years and 4 years.

which is a dead simple fairly hidden dca move.

the nano s which does 6.6th at 140 watts uses a wifi dongal.

I wonder if the wifi dongle could be replace with an eth cable dongal.

The mini at 800 watts looks really nice, but it is pricey  at 1100 with the shipping.

I even thought it would be interesting to have a toy like that.
Not to generate heat, because most of the year the weather is hot. But to mine a little.

Now, these numbers end up not being very encouraging. Investing $1k, to get the return 5 years later, ends up being a lot.

I had to find a cheaper but equally interesting "toy" for the "home miner" adventure.

Meanwhile, I became curious. How is the connection to the network made on the Mini 3? The thing is, in the photos, you can't see the place for the network cable.

not sure the new nano 3s has a wifi dongle which I wonder if you could use an eth dongle.

No one has shown me the mini and if it has a wifi dongle.

and if you can use an eth dongle.

The mini uses WiFi like the nano does but the mini also has a USB port that Canaan says can be used with a eth LAN dongle. However - they also say that it may not work with all of them. Would be nice if Canaan provided a list of ones that *do* work... I suppose a good start would be to use a dongle that works with Linux w/o needing an additional driver.

\The mini 3 and nano 3 s only have usb slot . You are given a free Wi-Fi adapter which is inserted to that usb port . For those who want wired you have to buy usb 2.0/3.0 to Ethernet adapter.
an indepth video of the miners at CES and the app!

the nano s which does 6.6th at 140 watts uses a wifi dongal.

I wonder if the wifi dongle could be replace with an eth cable dongal.

The mini at 800 watts looks really nice, but it is pricey  at 1100 with the shipping.

Yes Yes it does

here from their website
for mini 3
8 We recommend you use the Wi-Fi module we provide for free. The USB interface does not guarantee support for all Wi-Fi transceiver modules or RJ45 adapters. The USB interface has limited support for some single RJ45 converters and does not guarantee support for USB-hubs.

I had given feedback to them in the nano 3 thread and they listened.
Will nano 3 have an Ethernet version? Can the usb type c input have power cum Ethernet support ? .

i believe this one would work but this is type c. You will need a usb to type c adapter.

This makes things interesting as the equipment becomes more portable.

Now I just had to decide which one to use, to enjoy (with its great limits) mining...
