I haven't heard about that guy in a long while. Apparently, he now faces 109 years in prison for tax evasion.
The interview which was posted earlier today already has 1.5m views.

Ver claims that Bitcoin has been hijacked by the state and fires shots at Theymos, although he doesn't name him directly (I haven't seen the whole thing, so not 100% sure on this though).

Thoughts?

Taxation is theft. Regardless of Roger's attitude towards Bitcoin, he is being hunted down by a government who wants to steal his wealth. My support goes out to him.

I'd have to watch the entire interview first. So far, however, and although this man has always been so full of himself, I don't think it's fair. I don't know the nitty-gritty of the law and the facts of his particular case/s, but every country in the world has rich and powerful people who are also tax evaders themselves. Not a single one of them is sentenced to more than a hundred years simply because of it. So, if Ver will face 109 years in prison for it, it's certainly not just about tax evasion.

A man who is peaceful, not a US citizen and according to Roger the claims are pure fabrication.

If Ver renounced his US citizenship only in 2014 and yet he accumulated his vast wealth in Bitcoin years earlier as a US citizen without paying taxes, is he not liable for tax evasion?

Per US tax codes he IS liable for tax evasion. When renouncing his US citizenship he also owes an 'exit tax' (several other countries have the same thing) and even more to the point - he is liable per the tax codes as they were during the years in question. Just because the codes have changed since then make no difference tho Ver is insisting it's 'not fair' because penalties for some things were lowered since then.

This guy is a piece of work. Who does he think he is? One of those self-sovereign idiots that thinks laws and taxes don't apply to them?
It is one thing to escape laws or taxes that are grossly unfair and unjust, but that doesn't apply in this case. Ver is simply a tax cheat and tax evader.

Everyone should pay their FAIR share of taxes. I hope he rots in prison.

If one wishes to pay less taxes, there are plenty of ways to do it through means that are perfectly legal.
They are called tax loopholes, err I mean tax strategies commonly used by the wealthy. But I guess this fool was too cheap to hire a good tax advisor.

Yep, as NotFuzzyWarm said - the exit is still a cost to pay  Roll Eyes By the laws which are at the time of such an act, as I understood.

Heard lots of the drama behind it on r/btc as I remember especially, but I too believe it's an example to be set by the gov guys.
It's no wonder he was set up to be behind the bars, but 109 years, sheesh.

Tucker is often looking for personalities who fought back the system and struggle, Ver has always represented himself to be this person like a crusader.

I haven't fully watched the video but if this is about taxes, I'm sure we are not going to be on the side of our goverment knowing they build nothing with our money.

Interesting to if the timemachine works on this thread and why the replies are gone indeed. Never used it myself.
But after all - it can all be said and done to throw some dirt in the eyes.
Alas, further analysis is needed.

Thoughts?

U.S. government decide to punish cryptocurrency user very harshly again. It reminds me of Ross Ulbricht who got far longer prison time compared with other people who does similar crime. Meanwhile people like SBF (FTX founder who did exit scam) got light sentence even though they did far more damage.

It all depends on the mood of the gov and what they think.
Or maybe he complied with some things behind the scenes, we would never know.

If the offence is tax evasion, should the penalty be that harsh, i don't really care about Roger Ver personally, but is he being punished for something greater than evading tax. In the video he also said he has long renounced his U.S. citizenship, so i guess what he owes is back when he was a citizen and as another user said 'exit tax', but then the question is should the punishment be this strong on this basis alone?

Ask the gov guys, they are always picky in the cases.
As it was told in previous posts - probably to make an example out of the person in question.

Meanwhile people like SBF (FTX founder who did exit scam) got light sentence even though they did far more damage.

The new president promised that he will release Ross from prison, and I guess we can expect the same in the case of SB, and who knows, it is possible that BTC Judas will also receive a different treatment. As for FTX, I wouldn't exactly say that 25 years is a small sentence, but the bigger problem is that his closest associates received sentences as if they had stolen ice cream from a store.

As for taxes, the saying goes that in life you can't escape from two things, one is death, and the other is paying taxes. If you are not intelligent enough to know how to avoid paying taxes, then don't play with these things - some will obviously learn the hard way.

~snip~
What did Theymos do to him?

From what I heard from the video, it can be concluded that RV believes that at the moment when BTC first began to attract public attention (2011), this forum participated in a conspiracy with a three-letter agency that was interested in BTC in order to prevent a quality and meaningful discussion about it - or the forum (admin) did nothing to prevent it.

I wasn't here then, nor were most of the members active today, but it seems to me that RV sees the culprits in everyone who didn't think like him or doesn't think the same today. If you watch the video, it is quite clear that he considers himself the second most important person after Satoshi, and that is why they want to destroy him in any possible way.
