POW coins no longer get the same hype and therefore even if there were cryptocurrencies that can be mined easily, the return from them is not worth it. As for Bitcoin cloud mining, 99.9999% of the sites that claim to do mining are scams, so stay away from them, especially those that promise to double your profits in a short time.

1. Mining testnet coin or altcoin using hardware you already have.
2. Rent mining hardware on marketplace such as Mining Rig Rentals.

For some? if you want just some cryptos then cloud mining isn't your way to go but websites that have the likelihood of faucets. Or those exchanges that have an earn-and-learn feature.

Nobody should be bringing up this topic since the cost of hosting cloud mining equipment is too high leading to razor-thin margins for the operator, which is what causes them to scam in the first place.

But giving some benefit of doubt, cloud mining is a scam, a very well disguised one by many companies out there. The only mining that is real is that is done by yourself.

Today mining is no longer profitable if done on your own, better to buy bitcoin for long term.

There are many newbies who do not know that cloud mining is a scam, they just want to make quick money from it and i guess op is one of such newbies. Cloud mining is a thing of the past after they were exposed as a scam site; there's really no machine involved; all they have is a script.
Cloud mining is an HYIP reinvented, and you can buy these scripts online and just configure the percentages and calculations. Stay away from cloud mining; better stake your coin, or buy Bitcoin and HODL.

I believe that if one cannot buy gears to mine BTC, either as a solo miner or joining a mining pool, they should simply buy and hold BTC, cloud mining should not be in consideration.

You can't. You would be able to mine some, even Bitcoin, if you had this wish in 2009/2010 because, at that time, it was possible to mine Bitcoin with a CPU.
