This is a sad thing to hear, someone losing their life because of a bet that won’t even be enough to get him food that will last for a single day.

One thing I know and I have seen is that, most of these bets we see people making or staking their lives for meanwhile the rewards are worth nothing isn’t really for the money, most times the people that partake in it do it because they want to “show off” - they want others to know that they are capable of doing that thing even if the reward isn’t worth it.

Take for example, the student that died in that river I’m sure swimming across it isn’t really an easy job and that student must have thought if he pulled it off he’ll most likely be able to farm some respect from it and that’s why he most likely agreed despite the danger involved.

Gambling or not, I don’t think anyone should do anything that their mind didn’t agree to - the fact that you never wanted to do it in the first place is a sign and it should be brushed aside.

That's why it's not good for one  to gamble with what you can't lose no matter how tempting you think the offer is. As long as gambling is consign there is no sure odd, games are unpredictable occurrence. So gambling is ment to be done with what we can lose and not what we can't. The same mistake he made is the same thing some gambler's do while gambling with all they have believing it's a golden opportunity. Though this is considered as part of fun and entertainment if safety precautions were taken during this process, they're meant to keep lifejackets in tight should incase of anything. Though The problem about most people is always having overconfidence towards thier swimming skills because they think that it can never fail them which is why most people don't always bother to keep safety measures in place, because they have this strong believe that they can possibly do it even without applying those tools.

N300 in my country is not worth the price of anything, not even a good snack or a fare fee for transportation, the bet was just to prove he was capable of doing what they argued about, clearly he so much believed in himself forgetting stranger things may happen.

It's a university year spent, most university courses are 4 or 5 years intervals, so whenever you pass one year we call it 100 Level, after second year test and exams we call it 200 Level same goes on until the 4th or 5th year. And, chemical engineering is a course studied in the university, just like those studying nursing or medical courses.

That is stupidity at the highest possible level, for 0.3 dollars then words truly cannot express how stupid this is. No one should start a bet that involves danger in it, any type of danger and in fact when I read the title I thought someone had killed himself after making a 200K dollars bet and losing it and not this type. I don't understand someone being a Chemical engineer and so goofy minded to accept such a bullshit challenge as who can swim longer, these kind of things may be are normal for a second grade kid but surely not for students.

When I was growing up, I participated in many stupid bet but I wouldn't classify them as life-threatening. It is sad that this person lost his life and lost his destiny. Those who set him up to this type of bet should be arrested. Stories like this make me recall when my mom would say, "Don't push yourself into a situation where the devil will work overtime." This is just like a normal bet people make, like in a swimming competition where they do crazy flips or stunts. Another thing that's paining me here is the amount. It wasn't even a big amount. I think he probably just wanted to do it for the fame and the morale boost that would come from it. It was so unfortunate that he couldn't make it. I'm sure if someone had told him he wouldn't make it, he would have laughed.

The risk will be bigger if we decide to participate because we may lose our life anytime. Many things we can do to use that as a betting and not risk our life for something that is not useful. Was there any reason why he suddenly drowned? Like I'm surprised since I reckon if there was anyone who'd have wanted to take the bet they'd at least know how to swim. Honestly if a person knows how to swim I don't think they'd consider taking a bet like this life-threatening. It was only on hindsight that we see it like that because, well, the person involved died. Personally yes I'd consider it suicidal cause idk how to swim. Anything that involves others as well should count as something you'd avoid (or anything banned/illegal) but other than those I reckon it's just all fine? I am saying this because I don't know where we can rate challengers such as in the sports football games that plays the league competition while a prize is stipulated. Do we also say they are gambling or in competition?

Betting as risky as what the thread mentioned involved pride; it is not really the money but to prove that they are better than all the other guys or what they are doing, I just can't imagine the price of risking your life for $0.30. Those who do this kind of act are young people who are looking for adventure to satisfy their egos because they are looking for attention. We parents should guide our children not to enter this kind of risky game just to show off.

Sad. Imagine that, just for cents of a dollar, you will die. I won't do it even for 500 pesos which is almost $10 converted. I know there are places where life is too difficult financially but let's always consider the risk that we will take. If it's too foolish to do, don't do it, even if it is to prove our manhood or whatever pride and ego that we have.
This can also be related to gambling with a gambler so down in losses. He might deposit big and take that one bet all-in that might ruin all his financials and if it loses, he might do something stupid that will take his own life. Let's always have a clear mind first before we take that gamble.
